Mouth cancer symptoms: This sign on your tongue could signal the deadly disease

Mouth cancer refers to cancer that develops in any of the parts that make up the mouth and can occur on either the lips, gums, tongue, inner lining of the cheeks, roof or the floor of the mouth. Cancer in the mouth forms when cells on the lips or in the mouth develop changes in their DNA. It’s not clear what causes these mutations that lead to mouth cancer, however, doctors have identified factors that may increase the risk of mouth cancer.

If you experience red or red and white patches on the tongue or the lining of the mouth it could be a warning sign of the disease, according to Dr Jonathan Hiscocks from new Town Dental Care.

Other symptoms of mouth cancer include one or more mouth ulcers which do not heal after three weeks, unexplained bleeding, pain when swallowing, a persistent sore throat, numbness in the mouth, unusual lumps in the mouth or a persistent hoarseness.

It’s strongly advised to make an appointment with your doctor or dentist if you have any persistent signs and symptoms that last more than two weeks.

Dr Hiscocks said of spotting the signs of mouth cancer: “It is very important that if you feel you have any of the above symptoms you visit your dentist or doctor, particularly if these issues do not heal or disappear within three weeks.

“If you aren’t sure, it’s safest to go for a check-up anyway and aha your dentist check any problems thoroughly.

“You should check your mouth every few weeks. Grab a small mirror and check over your whole mouth by pulling your cheeks out to check the insides of your mouth and your cheek lining.

“Feel for any lumps in both sides of your neck and under your lower jaw.”

What causes mouth cancer?

Dr Hiscocks said: “Most cases of mouth cancer are linked to tobacco or drinking alcohol. However, overexposure to sunlight can also be responsible, particularly affecting the lips.

“There is also growing evidence that an increasing number of cases are caused by the sexually-transmitted HPV infection in the mouth.

“Anyone can be affected by the disease, however, men over 40 are thought to be the most prone.”

How can one reduce their risk

Dr Hiscocks advised: “If you’re a smoker – quit. Reduce the levels of alcohol precautions to limit your exposure to the sexually transmitted HPV infection by using condoms or dams to lower your risk. If you are eligible, have the HPV vaccination, eat a balanced and healthy diet and book in for regular check-ups with your dentist to keep on top of any issues.”

When mouth cancer is established, it does have clear symptoms which should be easier to spot. Cancer is easier to treat the earlier it’s diagnosed.

However, only 50 percent of mouth cancers are only diagnosed when the disease has already spread within the neck, making it all the more important to check yourself regularly.

T.I. Gave A Crash Course In How Not To Talk To Your Kid About Sex

When it comes to broaching the topic of sex with your kids, no one is perfect. It’s an awkward, goofy and almost painfully real conversation to have. And, of course, paired with the layers of stigma, anxiety, and patriarchy of-it-all, it’s a fraught issue that leaves a lot of room for discomfort and misunderstandings.

Rest assured, though, you can’t botch a conversation about sex any more than rapper and actor T.I. In an interview with Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham on Ladies Like Us, as reported by BuzzFeed, T.I. claimed he’s gone to the gynecologist with his 18-year-old daughter to “check her hymen” — even detailing how he got her to agree to share that intimate information about her sexual health.

First of all: ew. And, second of all: nope.

The hymen, for the uninitiated, per the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), is a “thin membrane that partially covers the entrance to the vagina.” Because vaginas are unique, hymens are also unique, a hymen might be different depending on the person. And not every person with a vagina is born with a hymen, anyway. We don’t really have answers for why, biologically, a body has a hymen — but we do know that it is not a thing meant to stay “intact” until a person has had penis in vagina, penetrative sex and that it is not a means for determining whether a person is a virgin (which is a social construct and not a real thing).

In short, virginity tests are bullshit.

“Virginity tests aren’t real,” Cassandra Corrado, an independent sex educator tells SheKnows. “You can’t actually measure or monitor virginity (which is something that most people only care about when it concerns a hymen). The hymen, or vaginal corona, can be damaged or stretched in a number of ways that have nothing to do with penetrative sex. It could happen using a tampon, doing gymnastics, falling particularly hard, riding a bike or horse, masturbating, or any number of other things.”

Despite the weird archaic cultural fixation on “blood on the sheets” after (supposed) first-time intercourse, the membrane can tear or be stretched over time because of any of the activities above. And the state of a hymen says nothing about a person’s sexual activity. The obsession with it by a parent, though — and how they choose to respond to their kid being sexually active — speaks volumes about their priorities.

“When we talk about virginity testing (or in this case, virginity policing), we’re really saying ‘has a penis entered this vagina?’ and using that as our framework for defining if someone is sexually experienced not only erases queerness, but it implicitly tells people with vaginas that their worth is tied to their sexual behaviors,” Cassandra Corrado, an independent sex educator tells SheKnows. “That message runs deep — when a kid hears that their worth is implicitly tied to their sexuality purity, they’re more likely to experience body shame, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and to feel uncomfortable talking about their sexual desires and boundaries.”

Behavior like T.I’s prioritizes the supposed state of his daughter’s hymen (and, more specifically, his feelings about it) over her privacy, autonomy and sexual health — and that can have a lasting impact. After all, the way a parent approaches sex will undoubtedly leave a mark on their kids and affect the kind of sexual being they become.

“I want parents to know that this type of behavior is traumatizing,” Corrado says. “It reduces the amount of autonomy that kids have and limits their ability to speak with their doctors privately, which ultimately can put their health and well-being at risk. Prioritize open spaces for conversation, not shaming — that’s how you help your kids grow into healthy, autonomous adults. “

So, how can parents do right by their kids when we talk about sex?

Talking about sex in a way that doesn’t turn it into something your kid needs to try hide or be ashamed of is a good start. And not subjecting them to dehumanizing, stigmatizing and shame-based tests — if that’s not obvious by now.

“I think that parents should start talking about what they can do for their children to provide them with a healthy sex life,” Dr. Emily Rymland, DNP FNP-C and Clinical Development Manager at Nurx tells SheKnows. “They should talk to the kids the way the kids want to be spoken to. There are kids who do not want to discuss it with their parents, but you can still say ‘I want you to control it and I want you to enjoy it, it should be an experience that empowers you.’ Make space for your kids to come forward and just say ‘I’m here with what you need.’ That’s what a parent should be doing.”

Corrado adds that it’s not uncommon for parents to be afraid to bring up sex or to be worried they won’t have the right answers or the right words to stumble through the conversation. But you can’t let that fear of an awkward unknown keep you from giving your kid access to the information they’ll inevitably need.

“Talking about sex is essential if you want your children to grow up learning about their body and knowing how to set boundaries around it,” she says. “When parents are uncomfortable talking about sex, I first tell them to mind their gut reactions — your kid might ask something that could shock or surprise you, but have a plan in place so that you don’t act based off of the first thing your gut tells you. Instead, ask open-ended questions or offer to research it together.”

The willingness to make “the talk” an ongoing dialogue makes all the difference in making sure your kid knows they can trust you when it comes to their sexual health. And, in a super smart #CommunicationHack, Corrado adds that you can also plan your talks around another activity— “like coloring, baking cookies, or folding laundry” — because it can make it all a little less awkward or uncomfy for everyone involved if you have something to do with your hands.

“‘The talk’ isn’t just a one-time thing — it’s something that you must do on an ongoing basis throughout your kid’s life,” Corrado says. “And it’s going to look different depending on how old they are. So, have conversations early and often.”

High-salt intake, which can send a person’s blood pressure reading soaring and raise the risk of developing cardiovascular complications, is a good example.

Further supporting evidence that what is good for the heart is also good for the brain, a new study published in Nature showed that a high-salt diet may impair cognitive function by causing a deficiency of the compound nitric oxide, which is vital for maintaining vascular health in the brain, according to Weill Cornell Medicine researchers.

The investigators sought to understand the series of events that occur between salt consumption and poor cognition and concluded that lowering salt intake and maintaining healthy blood vessels in the brain may “stave off” dementia.

“Our study proposes a new mechanism by which salt mediates cognitive impairment and also provides further evidence of a link between dietary habits and cognitive function,” said lead study author Dr. Giuseppe Faraco, an assistant professor of research in neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute at Weill Cornell Medicine.

The new study advances research published last year in Nature Neuroscience by Dr. Faraco and senior author Dr. Costantino Iadecola, director of the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute and the Anne Parrish Titzell Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine.

The 2018 study found that a high-salt diet caused dementia in mice, showing that the rodents became unable to complete daily living tasks such as building their nests and had problems passing memory tests.

After ruling out the theory that high salt intake was restricting blood flow in the mice, the researchers posited that high salt consumption may cause tau proteins in the brain to become unstable.

The protein tau is known to form tangles in the areas of the brain important for memory and then move through the brain as symptoms progress, and increasing evidence suggests this process may be an underlying trigger of brain decline.

Although further research on salt intake and cognition in humans is needed, the current mouse study is a further warning sign to regulate salt consumption, Dr. Iadecola said.

He continued: “And the stuff that is bad for us doesn’t come from a saltshaker, it comes from processed food and restaurant food.

“We’ve got to keep salt in check. It can alter the blood vessels of the brain and do so in a vicious way.”

In addition to high-salt consumption, inactivity is another risk factor for heart disease that may also increase a person’s risk of developing dementia.

As the NHS explains: “A lack of regular physical activity can increase your risk of heart disease, becoming overweight or obese, and type 2 diabetes – all of which are risk factors for dementia.”

As the health body notes, older adults who don’t exercise are also more likely to have problems with memory or thinking (known as cognitive abilities).

It recommends aiming for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, such as brisk walking, cycling or dancing, and you should also do strengthening exercises twice a week, such as gardening or yoga to reduce your risk.

The result of an analysis of 11 studies investigating the link between middle-aged people and the effects of physical exercise on their thinking and memory in later life found that underlines the importance of regular exercise in reducing the risk of developing dementia.

As Alzheimers UK reports, the findings show that regular exercise can significantly reduce the risk of developing dementia by about 30 percent, and for Alzheimer’s disease specifically, the risk was reduced by 45 percent.

One particular study looked at health behaviours of over 2,000 men in Wales, and followed them for 35 years.

Of the five behaviours that were assessed (regular exercise, not smoking, moderate alcohol intake, healthy body weight and healthy diet), exercise had the greatest effect in terms of reducing dementia risk.

Overall, people who followed four or five of the above behaviours were up to 60 percent less likely to develop dementia.

Breathing techniques to try when you're feeling stressed or anxious

Just breathe.

How many times have you heard that advice when you’re in the middle of a stress-induced meltdown?

The problem, though, is that many of us don’t know how to properly breathe to calm ourselves down.

We know the general in and out thing, but when we’re anxious it’s all too easy to start speed-breathing with no way to stop, or become so self-aware of our body that we forget how to breathe without thinking about it.

Breathwork can be a handy strategy for dealing with stress and anxiety, giving us simple guides to adjust our breathing and thus boost our mood. By encouraging us to count our breaths, the exercise gives us something to focus on and makes sure our breath is properly regulated – rather than being anxious gasps for air.

Below, for National Stress Day and any other time you need them, we’ve chatted to some breathing experts (yes, those exist) to gather some simple techniques we can all master.

Breathing technique for general anxiety: Basic box breathing

This is your go-to breathing technique for dealing with anxiety.

Rebecca Dennis, the author of And Breathe, explains: ‘When people feel anxious they tend to breathe shallowly, in their chest and often hold their breath. Box breathing is a technique that can help calm thoughts, bring us back into the present moment and release tension. It’s a simple technique that’s easy to learn and one you can do anywhere.

‘Box breathing can help handle even the most stressful of situations by focusing on deep breathing. It’s a technique used by SAS to focus and ground in highly stressful situations. You can use this whether you are stuck in heavy traffic, feel some nerves before presenting or taking an exam.’

So, here’s how you do it:

  • Inhale through the nose for a count of four
  • Hold this breath for a count of four
  • Release the breath out through the nose for a count of four
  • Hold for a count of four

Easy, right? You can do this cycle as many times as you like, making sure to focus on breathing from the lower belly instead of the upper chest.

Rebecca suggests placing one or both of your hands on your abdomen or sides to feel the lower part of your belly rise as you breathe in.

 

Breathing technique to de-stress: The Double Calm Breath

The double calm breath is one often used over at Breathpod, a breathwork coaching organisation.

Breathpod founder Stuart Sanderman talks us through the technique, which is done simply by doubling the length of the exhale to the inhale.

  • Inhale through the nose for a count of four
  • Exhale through pursed lips for a count of eight
  • Inhale for a count of five through the nose
  • Exhale through pursed lips for a count of 10
  • Inhale through the nose for a count of six
  • Exhale through pursed lips for a count of 12

If the increase in lengths is difficult, don’t panic. You can stick to inhaling for four and exhaling for eight – do whatever makes you feel most relaxed.

Breathing technique to deal with anxiety ahead of meetings: Bee Breath

The Bee Breth helps you tune out distractions and get you feeling calm and confident. Use it before a social gathering or a meeting to soothe that negative mental monologue.

  • Sit up straight with eyes closed and a gentle smile
  • Place tips of index fingers against the cartilage between your cheek and ear
  • Inhale deep and steady through the nose
  • Exhale, and as you do make a bumble-bee humming sound – ‘mmmm’ rather than ‘buzzzz’
  • Repeat this five times

 

Breathing technique to deal with anxiety in crowds: Alternative Nostril Breathing

Stuart recommends trying this on your commute to feel centred and calm in crowds.

You can do this in a private space, too, though, in case you feel a bit awkward pressing your nose in front of a load of strangers.

Here’s how:

  • Sit comfortably, spine straight, rest left hand on lap and bring right hand to face make a peace sign
  • Close your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale through your left nostril
  • Pause as you close your left nostril with your right ring finger and open right nostril
  • Release breath slowly through right nostril, pausing briefly at end of exhale
  • Inhale through right nostril slowly and steadily.
  • Pause as you close right nostril with right thumb and open left nostril
  • Release breath slowly through left nostril
  • Repeat for five to ten cycles

Try to keep the length of inhales and exhales consistent – a count of five can help.

 

Breathing technique to unwind after work: 5pm Breathing

Richie, better known as The Breath Guy, says 5pm Breathing is meant for the ‘joyous moment where we get to knock off work, relax, and let our hair down’.

He says: ‘It also stands for five breaths per minute and is designed to help you wind down and de-stress your internal systems.’

  • Start in a seated or lying down position
  • Put one or both hands over your belly button so you can feel the movement of your abdomen
  • Inhale for four seconds through your nose – you should feel your hands rise or move outwards
  • Exhale slowly for six seconds through your nose. No need to empty your lungs all the way, just exhale slowly until your lungs feel comfortably empty.
  • Hold your breath for two seconds
  • Repeat this cycle ten times

Breathing technique to help you get back to sleep

If you can’t drift off or your stress is keeping you up at night, try this technique to help slow the mind and increase calmness.

  • Inhale through the nose for a count of four
  • Hold that breath for a count of six
  • Exhale through pursed lips for a count of eight
  • Repeat four times

Bed bug bites: Three signs you could have an infestation in your bed

Bedbugs are small, reddish-brown parasitic insects that bite the exposed skin of sleeping humans and animals to feed on their blood, according to Mayo Clinic.

While bed bugs aren’t known to spread disease, being bitten by a bed bug can be painful and very itchy so it is important to recognise the signs of an infestation.

Bed bugs often dwell in nooks and crannies, such as a person’s bed, and there are a number of ways to tell if a person has an infestation in their bed.

  • Bites – often on areas exposed while sleeping, like the face, neck and arms
  • Spots of blood on your bedding – from the bites or from squashing a bedbug
  • Small brown spots on bedding or furniture (bedbug poo)

Bed bug bites usually clear up on their own in a week or so but people can take steps in the meantime to ease the pain and prevent symptoms from worsening.

As the NHS outlines, you can try:

  • Putting something cool, like a clean, damp cloth, on the affected area to help with the itching and any swelling
  • Keeping the affected area clean
  • Not scratching the bites to avoid getting an infection

In addition, a pharmacist may recommend using a mild steroid cream such as hydrocortisone cream (children under 10 and pregnant women should get advice from a doctor before using hydrocortisone cream) or taking antihistamines – these may help if the bites are very itchy and you’re unable to sleep, notes the NHS.

How to prevent infestations

Bedbugs can move from one site to another by traveling on items such as clothing, luggage, furniture, boxes and bedding so it is important to inspect used bedding items and upholstered furniture carefully before bringing them into your home, advises Mayo Clinic.

You should check mattress seams for bed bug excrement and place your luggage on tables or dressers instead of on the floor, cautions the health body.

It is also important to keep dirty laundry well sealed when travelling to reduce the risk of a bed infestation, according to research published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The study, led by Dr William Hentley from the University of Sheffield’s Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, suggests that leaving worn clothes exposed in sleeping areas when travelling may attract bed bugs.

The University of Sheffield research conducted experiments in two identical, temperature-controlled rooms in which four tote bags of clothes were placed – two containing soiled clothes, two with clean clothes – in the presence of bed bugs.

In each run of the experiment, one room received an increase in concentration of CO² to simulate human breathing.

The Sheffield scientists found that in the absence of a human host, bed bugs were twice as likely to aggregate on bags containing soiled clothes compared to bags containing clean clothes.

The study also found that in the room with increased concentrations of C0², bed bugs were more likely to leave their refuge and initiate host-seeking behaviour.

Consequently, dirty laundry left in an open suitcase, or left on the floor of an infested room may attract bed bugs, suggests the study.

Dr William Hentley from the University of Sheffield said: “Bed bugs are a huge problem for hotel and homeowners, particularly in some of the world’s biggest and busiest cities. Once a room is infested with bed bugs, they can be very difficult to get rid of, which can result in people having to dispose of clothes and furniture that can be really costly.

“Our study suggests that keeping dirty laundry in a sealed bag, particularly when staying in a hotel, could reduce the chances of people taking bed bugs home with them, which may reduce the spread of infestations.”

How to get rid of an infestation

According to the NHS, you should contact your local council or pest control service – it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get rid of bedbugs yourself because they can be resistant to some insecticides.

You should also wash affected bedding and clothing, said the health body: “Use a hot wash (60C) or tumble dry on a hot setting for at least 30 minutes.”

In addition, put affected clothing and bedding in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer (-16C) for four days (alternative to hot washing) to help rid the house a bed bug infestation.

It added: “Clean and vacuum regularly – bed bugs are found in both clean and dirty places, but regular cleaning will help you spot them early.”

Vanderpump Rules’ Ariana Madix Reflects on Cancer Removal One Year Later

Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix is celebrating one year of being cancer-free.

On Instagram, Madix, 34, shared a video of herself in the hospital last year. In the caption of the post, the reality TV personality said she was “debating posting this for so long but whatever! i’m doing it.”

“Officially the spookiest thing i’ve ever experienced! a year ago, i wasnt able to celebrate my favorite holiday bc i had just undergone surgery for melanoma,” she continued. “Being told that cancer was living rent free on my body for years was scarier than any 80s slasher movie.”

Madix went on to thank her “amazing” doctor for caring for her, as well as expressing gratitude for pop singer Kim Petras, whose music kept her “positive” during the health scare.

“Moral of the story: if you’re unsure of something on your body, GET CHECKED and then GET CHECKED AGAIN!” she concluded the post.

In January, the star responded to fans inquiring about her procedure, saying, “When you raise concerns with a doctor, be persistent … They told me I was fine for years.”

Madix revealed her bout with cancer on New Year’s Eve with a lengthy Instagram post, in which she reflected on 2018 as a whole, and the ups and downs that came with it.

“I had to have a lil bit o’cancer removed from my body and lymph nodes biopsied,” she wrote at the time.

She assured her one million followers that she was healthy again — “In the clear now!” — and shared how the previous year had changed her outlook on life.

“2018 was a year full of huge moments that were unplanned. Lifelong dreams fulfilled and unexpected hardships overcome,” she wrote.

Madix continued, “So much progress was made on my many goals and ambitions, but I’ve had to learn the same lessons in life over and over: Intense ambition is one of my best qualities BUT when it becomes overwhelming to have so many goals, I need to take a step back and just focus on one thing. Even if an issue won’t be solved right away, talking about it ALWAYS sends it on a path to resolution and healing.”

Only two and a half months after giving birth to her fourth child, Daphne Oz is ready to hit the gym! 

The 33-year-old “Relish” author took to Instagram this week to share a mirror selfie of one of her first “real” workouts since welcoming baby Gigi with husband John Jovanovic in August.

Oz, who also shares daughters Philo and Domenica, as well as son Jovan Jr., with Jovanovic, had previously opened up about her fourth pregnancy and the toll that it took on her body. 

“It’s physically daunting,” she said to People. “I’ve been pregnant four times in five years now. On the one hand, your body is so resilient, it’s truly incredible what the human body is capable of. But on the other, it’s like, ‘Whoa, can you give me a break for a second?’” adding that her fourth pregnancy was her “hardest” physically.

Oz revealed her pregnancy news this past March alongside her father Dr. Oz and a gender-reveal lasagna. 

She later shared the news to Instagram with a photo of her belly bump, writing: “I do love to cook! bun in the oven #4 coming your way later this year and we couldn’t be more excited!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️”.

MCT, also called Medium Chain Triglycerides, are a great source of energy.

Karen explained: “Due to their shorter length than Long Chain Triglyceride, MCTs are easily digested and immediately released energy into the liver, and many health benefits are linked to the way your body processes them.

“This is the science of ketones; when consumed MCTs are converted to ketones which can be used as an additional natural source of energy to glucose. Kieran Clarke, PhD Professor of Physiological Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, England said, ‘Ketones are the most effective fuel you could have’.

Vegan diets are becoming increasingly popular and have been found to have a positive impact on many parts of a person’s health.

The diet eliminates meat and animal products, replacing these with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans, peas, nuts and seeds.

And among its benefits a vegan diet has been found to lower blood sugar levels and improve kidney function – high blood sugar levels can increase the risk of life-threatening health problems.

For those who can’t cut animal products out completely, for example eggs and dairy, a vegetarian diet has also been shown to help people live longer.

The authors of a large, long-term study featured in the British Medical Journal concluded vegetarianism is associated with a reduced risk of ischemic heart disease.

Another diet proven to help people live longer is the Mediterranean diet.

A study titled ‘Adherence to Mediterranean Diet Reduces Incident Frailty Risk: System Review and Meta-Analysis’, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, found a clear association between the Mediterranean diet and incident frailty.

But not only was there a link – the diet was found to significantly lower the risk of frailty, particularly in community-dwelling older people.

The Mediterranean diet is inspired by the eating habits of Greece, Southern Italy and Spain could lower the risk of frailty in old age.

Foods included in the diet include legumes, fish, fruits and vegetables.

Olive oil is a major component of the Mediterranean diet, and while it shouldn’t be consumed in large amounts, it’s been found to hold a host of health benefits.

French scientists found olive oil could prevent stroke in older people.

Having a persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit is also a common sign of the cancer.

This could mean going more often, with looser stools and unexplained changes.

Another symptom could be not going to the toilet enough or might feel as though they’re fully emptying their bowels.

When to speak with your GP

If your toilet habits have changed for more than three weeks, it’s a good idea to speak to a doctor.

But, most people with these symptoms don’t have bowel cancer.

They’re more likely to be caused by something less serious, including constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, or Crohn’s disease.

More than 40,000 new cases of bowel cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year.

Sometimes, a tumour can block the bowel, causing sudden strong pains in the stomach area, bloating and feeling or being sick.

This is called a bowel obstruction. You may also be unable to empty your bowels or pass wind.

If you think you have a blocked bowel, see your GP straight away or go to a hospital accident and emergency department.

Woman with 'face sinking' condition has stomach fat injected into her cheek

A woman whose face began to dramatically sink on one side is having her cheek rebuilt with fat taken from her stomach.

Kayleigh Crowther, first noticed the left-hand side of her face looking more sunken than usual, she thought she must be developing chiselled cheekbones, having recently lost some weight.

But when the ‘sinking’ didn’t stop, the 27-year-old realised that something was wrong.

Kayleigh says her self-esteem was shattered by the development of the condition, not helped by ignorant questions from strangers asking if she had been in an accident or had ‘cancer cut out of her face.’

Hoping that cosmetic filler injections would restore her facial symmetry, Kayleigh went to a clinic but was turned away by a medic, who told her there was something more serious afoot.

A long string of tests followed before she was finally diagnosed with Parry-Romberg Syndrome (PRS), a condition characterised by the progressive deterioration of the skin and tissue in one side of the face.

But thankfully her confidence has been restored after she had a fat transfer procedure at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital in April this year.

Kayleigh, who’s from South Yorkshire, says: ‘Before this, I was distraught. I knew that everybody else could see what I saw. It was soul-destroying to dislike myself that much – but now, I’m feeling the best I have in a long time.

‘It’s been a long road and there have been times where this could have easily swallowed me up, but I now know that I am Kayleigh with PRS – PRS doesn’t have me.’

Kayleigh first began to notice her appearance changing when she was 17; she couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was different, but felt she simply did not ‘look right.’

When she was 18 and began going out clubbing with friends that she noticed on the photos that the left-hand side of her face was looking increasingly sunken.

‘People would say: “Haven’t you got lovely cheekbones,” – then I’d say, “It’s only on the left side, though,” she explains.

‘I wasn’t in any pain and wasn’t sure what exactly a doctor would be able to do for me, so I didn’t think to visit my GP.’

In January 2014, when she was 22, Kayleigh and her partner Scott set off on the adventure of a lifetime to live in Australia.

But as her face was becoming increasingly asymmetrical, life quickly turned into a nightmare for Kayleigh.

‘I’d overhear children saying things like; “Mummy, what’s happened to that lady’s face?”‘

She was still looking for answers when she and Scott moved to New Zealand in November 2015.

‘I was trying really hard not to let it rule my life, but I was so unhappy,’ she recalls. ‘I was pushing myself, forcing myself to go out into the world – but inwardly, I felt anxious and scared all the time.

‘I was even on anti-anxiety medication. I just couldn’t seem to pull myself out of it.’

Thankfully, in New Zealand, after tirelessly emailing plastic surgeons, she finally received a long-awaited answer.

She says: ‘A plastic surgeon came back to me, saying not to quote him on it, but that he’d seen one other case of PRS in his career and it looked similar to mine.

‘So, I went to the doctor armed with my MRI scans and the suggestion that it could be PRS, and finally medics in New Zealand agreed that they thought that’s what I had.

‘I didn’t know much about it, especially as it’s so rare, but I looked it up and remember seeing all this terrifying, worst-case scenario information, like photos of really severe cases.

‘I remember saying to Scott that I didn’t know how I would carry on and cope if that was going to be my future. How are you supposed to keep moving forward?’

According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, PRS, the cause of which is unknown, sees the skin and soft tissues in one half of the face – usually the left-hand side – slowly shrink.

The initial facial changes, which tend to happen before the age of 20, usually occur around the cheek or upper jaw, and the severity varies from case to case.

The condition appears more typically in women than men and, while exact statistics are unknown, physicians have estimated it affects between one in 250,000 and one in a million people worldwide.

Before Kayleigh could have an operation, visa issues meant she returned to the UK in March 2018.

‘While I’d been away, I’d posted photos of my travels, but I had always been in control, making sure I posed in a certain way, or took them from an angle that meant you couldn’t see how bad my face looked,’ she explains.

‘But coming home meant seeing friends I’d not seen for ages. I knew they’d be shocked by how different I looked, so I had to take the plunge and tell them I’d been diagnosed with PRS.

‘Thankfully they were amazingly supportive. Back home, I hit the ground running. I was so close to getting answers. I didn’t want to stop.’

Doctors in South Yorkshire confirmed Kayleigh’s PRS diagnosis and she was referred to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where she was placed under the care of a facial surgeon.

He instead suggested they try a fat transfer.

‘He was absolutely amazing. I trust him wholeheartedly,’ she says.

‘The fat transfer injections are less invasive, and we really had nothing to lose.’

In April 2019, during a two-hour procedure , Kayleigh had liposuction to take fat from her stomach, which was then injected into her face by her ear and hairline.

Recalling the procedure, which she had on the NHS, she says: ‘I came round from the surgery and was handed a mirror. I can’t describe it – I looked symmetrical, like my old self again.

‘I’ve never been so happy to see my own reflection.’

Some of the fat has since broken down, meaning Kayleigh’s face has sunk a little, but much of it has stayed, which is proof to her that the procedure was a success.

Later this month, she will be meeting medics to see if she needs a second bout of fat injections and she hopes that, over time, she will slowly be able to have her cheek entirely rebuilt.

‘It’s such a rare condition that I’ve only recently been able to find other people like me via a Facebook support group,’ she adds.

‘I hope by sharing my story I can show others living with PRS that it doesn’t need to take over your life. You’re still you.

‘To everyone else out there, I’d want to say be a little kinder. Nobody likes to feel different, and those stares and comments can be awful. I was already feeling like an alien – I didn’t need people looking at me like one.’

The three-time London Marathon winner called on parents to limit youngsters’ screen time and instead encourage them to be more active. Paula, 45, who lives in Monaco, says she has switched her life ambition to “helping others achieve their goals”, which she aims to do partly through fronting public health campaigns. “I go for a run at the beginning of the day to keep myself physically and mentally healthy – to keep me sane – and I still jump into races, but now not competitively. My goal is to help others achieve their goals, to help improve the image of athletes and get more people into sport, including children.” 

Paula, whose 16-year marathon world record title was broken by a minute and 24 seconds by 25-year-old Kenyan Brigid Kosgei last month said: “You can put kids on diets and ensure they are eating healthily but children need to be physically fit and they are more sedentary than ever. 

“Children aren’t naturally lazy. If you watch them, they run around, they’re curious, they don’t like sitting still and they’re naturally competitive. Parents and teachers try to squash this, but that’s a mistake. Instead, we need to channel it into finding a sport that they love. 

“The more initiatives the better and we need to make activity more fun. My children tell me it was easier for me when I was growing up because there were fewer other fun things to do, but we need to make it easier and get children out scooting, doing family activities and active things that they enjoy.” 

Paula said that she, like many parents, faces the constant battle against the pull of the mobile phone or screen with her children, Isla, 12 and Raphael, nine. 

“Exercise helps boost self-esteem, happiness and confidence so if we get our children more active, they’ll become happier too,” she said. “I would limit screen time on every screen they have access to. There has to be time to exercise in the day and screen time should come as a reward for this. It’s give and take. As families, we also have to lead by example. If parents are on their screens all the time then this is not a good role model. 

“I say you can spend time on your phone but, like school work, you have to do activity too and lots of activities are fun as a family.” 

One of the initiatives Paula helped create, Families on Track, encourages parents and children to run relays together until they complete a combined distance of 10km. 

She is also on a World Health Organisation panel helping tackle childhood obesity. And she is an ambassador of The Daily Mile school fitness initiative, which has 10,000 schools signed up to encourage pupils to walk a daily mile. Paula is also a Designed to Move ambassador for Nike. 

Paula believes children need to be empowered with information to help them make it their own decision to embrace sport or exercise: “Instead of preaching or making life too restrictive it is important to educate children about the dangers of not exercising and also make sure you find activities they enjoy,” she said. 

“My daughter enjoys hockey and I don’t mind driving her half an hour twice a week to do it. 

“I also make my children walk a kilometre to school and then back every day and they meet friends on the way. They have never known anything different.” 

She also criticised the current school system which means very often children are sitting for up to two hours at a stretch during double lessons. “Children definitely need breaks to get up and run around for 15 minutes during long lesson periods. It is not only good for the body, but also good for mental health, happiness and it helps them remember things.” 

She has also helped promote an Asda Pharmacy- backed campaign to improve the uptake of the flu vaccine, particularly among vulnerable groups such asthma sufferers. 

Her support for the campaign follows research showing that 1.2 million of the estimated five million asthma sufferers in the UK have no plans to get vaccinated this winter. 

Nearly a third (29 per cent) of those polled said they’re not worried about the increased risk of asthma attacks and possible hospitalisation if they catch the virus. 

Diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma herself, aged 14, Paula believes the risk from not being protected with the jab isn’t worth taking due to potentially serious complications such as pneumonia, pleurisy and bronchitis. 

“I use a preventer inhaler morning and night to stay on top of it,” she says. “And if it is really cold or I am running in a polluted place I have to warm up slowly when I go for a run or use ventolin (asthma medication). I also take the flu jab every year to protect myself.”

Why You Should Eat Your Halloween Candy All at Once

For people who typically hoard Halloween candy past Thanksgiving, here’s some surprising advice: Some dentists actually condone eating your Halloween candy at one time, rather than rationing it out over weeks.

That doesn’t mean eating lots of candy is good for you, of course—but it might be better for your teeth. After you eat sweets, bacteria feed on the sugars and starches left on your teeth and form plaque. Eventually, the acid in plaque begins to wear away at the enamel coating your teeth, forming tiny holes—also known as cavities—that grow larger and larger over time. “Cavities are a matter of having something to feed the bacteria—the sugar from the candy—and also the duration of time it’s in contact with your teeth,” says Anna Berik, a dentist in Boston.

For that reason, having one all-you-can-eat candy feast—then brushing your teeth right after—is actually “less cavity-causing than spreading that candy out over the next three months and having sugar in your mouth day after day after day,” Berik says. (You could also minimize damage by dutifully brushing after each daily piece, but Berik says that’s less realistic for most people.)

While portion control is certainly good for your overall health, Berik says it doesn’t really matter, at least from a cavity-forming perspective, how much you eat at a time. “The bacteria can only make the acid so fast,” she says. “At some point, there’s a threshold where they can’t really work any harder. It really doesn’t matter if you have one Reese’s or three.”

Chris Kammer, a dentist in Madison, Wis., is also in favor of the one-and-done approach—so much so, in fact, that he started a Halloween candy buyback program more than 10 years ago, with the goal of preventing kids from dipping into their trick-or-treating bag over and over again. Kammer says he encourages parents to let their kids (and themselves) select a few favorite pieces of candy, then bring the rest of their haul to one of his 2,400 buyback sites around the country, where they can be traded in for cash before being shipped out to troops overseas. The going rate is $1 per pound.

“I never thought it was good, on any level, that a child would eat half a shopping bag full of candy over the course of a week,” he says. One sugar session, however, is unlikely to do much damage, he adds.

The best treats for your teeth are, surprisingly, those made of chocolate, Berik says. Chocolate-based treats melt quickly in the mouth, while hard candies, gummies and candy corn tend to stick around. “Something like caramel, that sticks to your teeth, is more cavity-causing than chocolate, which dissolves really easily,” Berik explains.

Just don’t forget to brush afterwards.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

As the NHS explained: “Prostate cancer does not usually cause any symptoms until the cancer has grown large enough to put pressure on the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the penis (urethra).”

Symptoms of prostate cancer can include:

  • Needing to urinate more frequently, often during the night
  • Needing to rush to the toilet
  • Difficulty in starting to pee (hesitancy)
  • Straining or taking a long time while peeing
  • Weak flow
  • Feeling that your bladder has not emptied fully
  • Blood in urine or blood in semen

These symptoms do not always mean you have prostate cancer. Many men’s prostates get larger as they get older because of a non-cancerous condition called prostate enlargement, explains the NHS.

Signs that the cancer may have spread include bone and back pain, a loss of appetite, pain in the testicles and unexplained weight loss, the health site added.

Speaking to Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby on the daytime show, Turnbull gave an update on his current health status: “I do feel psychically a lot better – psychologically a little different as you have ups and downs.”

The BBC star said that positive thinking forms an integral part of the treatment process: “I think it’s all about the moment you wake up and try and think positively.

“This is all part of nature – there’s still a beauty to it.

“It’s a fantastic world and you are part of that – let’s play our part.”

Health warning: Ticks that spread brain illness arrives on UK shores

Health officials have confirmed a deadly tick-borne brain disease has reached UK shores for the time. The tick-borne encephalitis virus has been located in Thetford Forest and on the Hampshire-Dorset border. Public Health England (PHE) says the current risk level is “very low”, although it is closely monitoring the situation to determine how common the infected ticks may be.

Dr Nick Phin, from Public Health England, said: “These are early research findings and indicate the need for further work. However, the risk to the general public is currently assessed to be very low.”

He continued: “We are reminding people to be ‘tick aware’ and take tick precautions, particularly when visiting or working in areas with long grass such as woodlands, moorlands and parks.”

What is the encephalitis virus?

As the NHS explained, encephalitis virus is an uncommon but serious condition in which the brain becomes inflamed (swollen). The deadly infection, which can be life threatening and requires urgent treatment in hospital, can affect anyone, although the very young and very old are most at risk.

Encephalitis sometimes starts off with flu-like symptoms, such as a high temperature and headache, but these do not always occur, explains the health site.

More serious symptoms develop over hours, days or weeks, and, if you or someone else recognise the serious symptoms, it is important to dial 999 immediately, urged the health body.

  • Fits (seizures)
  • Changes in personality and behaviour
  • Difficulty speaking

  • Treatments to help control the immune system

  • Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.

  • Clean the bite with antiseptic or soap and water.

Steps can also be taken avoid tick bites in the first place, such as avoiding areas where they are commonly found.

To reduce the risk of being bitten, the NHS recommends:

  • Cover your skin while walking outdoors and tuck your trousers into your socks
  • Use insect repellent on your clothes and skin – products containing DEET are best
  • Stick to paths whenever possible
  • Wear light-coloured clothing so ticks are easier to spot and brush off

Kate Middleton and Prince William reportedly had a marriage pact 3 years before they got engaged

With eight years of marriage under their belts and 3 kids, Kate Middleton and Prince Williams’ fairytale love story is one for the books. But what even many fans may not know is that the couple, whose relationship was years in the making after meeting in 2001 at the University of St. Andrews, almost didn’t make it to the altar.

However, an excerpt from the book Kate: The Future Queen, written by royal biographer Katie Nicholl, revealed that the two later traveled to the island of Desroches in the Seychelles that year and made a pact to one another three years before their engagement, which helped take pressure off the relationship and put Kate at ease.

It Doesn't 'Erase Women' to Acknowledge Other Genders Menstruate

If you think only women have periods—and feel upset when people tell you that other genders have them too—let’s talk.

Period product company Always announced last week it will be removing the Venus symbol (commonly used as a “female” emblem) from its packaging to be inclusive of all the other genders that menstruate. The move has drawn backlash from some women who believe they’re being erased from conversations about periods and who feel like the movement toward gender inclusivity is devaluing or attacking what they see as womanhood itself. Some people have said having periods and being able to give birth are what make women special and unique, and they believe it’s disrespectful to try to make these things apply to men and others.

A lot of this pushback involves willfully ignoring a biological fact: that trans men, non-binary people and people of literally all genders can menstruate, and many do. But I’d wager that what’s driving the transphobic uproar isn’t outright hate for trans people and people of other genders; rather, it’s a lack of understanding and, more than anything else, a reflexive fear of losing one’s identity.

In essence, this is a demand that we all ignore trans and gender-nonconforming people’s biological reality in order to preserve cis women’s feelings. And we can’t do that.

Just to set the record straight, gender doesn’t have anything to do with your body.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, everyone is assigned a sex at birth based on their genetics and body parts, and your sex is not the same as your gender.

“Gender identity is defined as a person’s deeply felt, inherent sense of being a girl, woman, or female; a boy, a man, or male; a blend of male or female; or an alternative gender,” the American Psychological Association explains in its guidelines for treating trans and gender-nonconforming people. “Gender identity differs from sex assigned at birth to varying degrees, and may be experienced and expressed outside of the gender binary.”

Cisgender people have a gender that aligns with their sex assignment, whereas trans and non-binary people don’t. There are an estimated 1.4 million trans and non-binary Americans. When we try to describe biological processes like menstruation and pregnancy as what makes women “unique and special,” we’re reducing womanhood down to a set of body parts. No matter if we’re cis or trans, we should all be able to agree that women are way more than our bodies. We have shared experiences, pressures, joys, and struggles, and those are what unite us.

Yes, all genders can menstruate.

Unlike gender, menstruation is about your body. Anyone with a typically functioning uterus and vagina will menstruate, regardless of their identity. For example, a trans man who has a typically functioning uterus and vagina will menstruate. That’s just a biological reality. So yes, men can have periods. In fact, anyone of any gender can have a period.

“Not all women menstruate and not all people who menstruate are women,” OB-GYN Dr. Jennifer Conti tells SheKnows. “If you have a uterus and aren’t pregnant/breastfeeding, menopausal, hormonally suppressing your periods, or dealing with a condition like PCOS, then you’re likely menstruating.”

To clarify some confusion, we’re not talking about trans women here. Most trans women do not have uteruses and vaginas and therefore don’t bleed. We’re talking about trans men. Many trans men have uteruses and vaginas, as do many non-binary folks. So they bleed.

Those women who are upset about making periods inclusive seem to think trans and non-binary people are somehow choosing to have their period. But of course, just like any cis woman, a trans man or non-binary person doesn’t get to choose whether menstruation “applies” to them. No one gets to choose whether or not they menstruate. If you have a uterus, menstruation is just your physical, biological reality.

“Gender has nothing to do with someone’s ability to menstruate,” Dr. Conti says. “It’s important to talk about gender as an irrelevant construct from menstruation—because it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside; you may have a uterus and you may be bleeding.”

It’s not fair to deny trans and gender non-conforming folks’ physical reality just so cis women feel “unique and special.”

Consider the trans man who has a uterus and therefore menstruates every month. How do you think he feels hearing everyone demanding we all keep saying only women menstruate? That guy probably already deals with a lot of stress and alienation from his own body every time he gets his period. What’s the point of making his life more miserable by telling him that his period invalidates his entire identity?

Research shows that denying, invalidating, or ignoring a person’s gender comes with real health consequences. Trans kids are already nearly four times as likely to deal with depression, and many studies have shown trans kids are even more likely to struggle with their mental health and attempt suicide the more they experience discrimination and stigma. One study published in the Journal of Homosexuality found trans kids who are denied access to gender-appropriate bathrooms, for example, are 45 percent more likely to attempt suicide.

Another study published in the American Journal of Sexuality Education found most LGBTQ kids received sex ed that only talked about heterosexual people, and the more excluded sexual minorities were from the discussion, the higher their rates of anxiety, depression and suicide risk are in high school and later in life. But research tells us the flip side is also true: more inclusive classrooms make LGBTQ students feel safer, face less bullying and get better grades in school.

Being validated and included in the conversation has a huge impact on LGBTQ people’s health and well-being. No one is denying that the vast majority of people who menstruate are girls and women. That said, there’s no reason to pretend that they’re the only ones who experience this, at everyone else’s expense. The same goes for pregnancy, breastfeeding or chestfeeding, or any other part of reproductive health.

Dr. Conti notes: “If a man with a uterus needs to wear a pad to soak up his period blood, what else would you propose he use? Man pads? Toddler pull-ups?”

We need to learn to share space.

I get it: for many, our womanhood is precious to us, and part of what’s at stake here is feeling able to unite and connect as women around a shared identity shaped by shared experiences. It’s true that these physiological realities do deeply affect the experience of womanhood for many. Many women bond over the shared experience of bleeding, birthing, breastfeeding and fending off all the sexist BS we deal with because our bodies do these things. We’ve created a deep, meaningful, powerful sense of community and shared identity over these physical experiences.

That’s valuable, and it’ll continue to be valuable. It also costs us virtually nothing to welcome people of other genders to come join, compared to how much those people gain from being included.

As feminist philosopher Dr. Kate Manne pointed out in a recent tweet, cis women are confusing “not being at the center of a discourse” with “erasure.” What’s at the heart of the backlash against acknowledging that all genders can menstruate is wanting to retain control of the narrative. It’s about cis women not wanting to relinquish the comfortable assumption that every conversation about periods has to do with them. It’s about wanting to keep that space for themselves and trying to stop it from being taken away. In short, it’s a loss of privilege.

“Where I see a step towards equality and viability, others experience a removal, a discomfort—otherwise known as privilege,” sexologist and sex educator Emily L. Depasse tells SheKnows. “The reactions to the removal of the Venus symbol exemplify privilege, and the discomfort in existing alongside trans and non-binary identities. It’s a confrontation that many cis-het identities do not yet have language for.”

We’ve always privileged cis women in conversations about periods and procreation because they’re the majority, and people seem to be experiencing the loss of that privilege as a personal attack—when it’s not.

We need to be able to share space. Even when that involves experiences that deeply affect our sense of selves, we need to be willing to let other people be at the table in peace, especially when those others are people who are already severely marginalized and way more oppressed than we are. Especially as women continue to fight for our rights and dignity, we need to be allies to others who are fighting for theirs. We can’t justifiably speak out about feeling erased while ourselves erasing other people.

Cis women don’t need to fight for the spotlight with trans and gender-nonconforming folks. We can celebrate and commiserate over periods, pregnancy, and the like without making it an exclusive party.

Women are way more than their bodies.

Nobody is going to forget that many cis women menstruate and give birth. To the contrary, our societal preoccupation with cis women’s menstrual cycles and ability to give birth tends to disadvantage us more than anything. Women still get passed over for jobs on the chance they’ll get pregnant, and then professionally sidelined or fired if they actually do. American women also used to pay more for health insurance because of their procreative abilities until Obamacare’s anti-discrimination policies came along (though the Trump administration and the GOP put in a solid effort to dismantle those rules.) As for menstruation, in 2016 people still brought up the whole “What if she’s on her period?” as a reason why a woman shouldn’t become president—and I swear to God I will drop kick the next person who asks me if I’m on my period just because I’m expressing normal human emotions.

We should also acknowledge that not all women have vaginas (as is the case for many trans women), and not every woman with a vagina is able to give birth or breastfeed. None of these women are any less of a woman because of what their bodies can or can’t do.

“Being inclusive around all procreative activities is better for trans men and non-binary folks who participate in them; it’s better for cis women who don’t or can’t; it’s better for trans women who typically can’t; and it’s better for cis women who do, absent bad ideology,” Dr. Manne writes.

One thing that actually makes women unique and special? Our willingness and dedication to supporting and lifting up the most vulnerable among us. The bottom line is that everybody deserves to be validated, supported, and given access to healthcare resources as they navigate their biological realities, no matter what their gender or identity might be.

And that starts with all of us acknowledging and speaking the truth: People menstruate, not just women.

Simon Cowell health: The producer on his new look which he owes to diet overhaul

Simon Cowell has recently revealed his whopping two stone weight loss which he credits to a diet of fruits and vegetables. The music mogul has also changed his sleeping pattern and ensures earlier bedtimes have changed his health for the better. The celebrity producer has dropped meat, eggs, dairy and fish from his diet and says the health benefits are real. Simon was also a notorious workaholic who would spend most evenings working till late at night.

The sleep deprivation was beginning to affect not only his health but his personal life too.

Simon made the decision to make some healthy changes and the results are clearly evident.

Simon spoke to Best magazine and said: “People have said, ‘Oh, he’s had a gastric band fitted but I haven’t. If I had, I would admit to it.

This diet is all about what you put into your body. It’s not the Atkins diet or anything else.

“It’s just common sense. It’s not hard at all.

I met this doctor in LA and he told me my diet was appalling and I had to cut out fatty foods and certain drinks.

Within a few weeks, I could see the difference. Cutting out sugar made a massive difference.

The first few weeks were difficult, but then I stopped craving sugar.

“I have also found a brilliant gluten-free beer, which helps. The hardest part is when I see Eric eat a pizza in front of me.”

Simon added that the change in sleep patterns and getting more shut eye has helped his weight loss too.

“I now go to bed way before midnight and get up at about 8am, and I feel so much better for it. I never eat late at night any more.”

Sleep deprivation causes changes to hormones that regulate hunger and appetite.

The hormone leptin suppresses appetite and encourages the body to expend energy.

Sleep deprivation reduces leptin and makes a person more likely to eat more of their overall calories at night, this in turn leads to weight gain.

Dr Susan Zafarlotfi, clinical director of the institute for sleep and wake disorders at Hackensack University Medical Centre in New Jersey said: “When you have sleep deprivation and are running on low energy, you automatically go for a bag of potato chips or other comfort foods.

“Sleep debt is like a credit card debt. If you keep accumulating credit card debt, you will pay high interest rates or your account will be shut down until you pay it all off. If you accumulate too much sleep debt, your body will crash.”

O! Momo review: Nepalese dumplings any which way you like them

Getting hit by a car isn’t a typical reason for opening a restaurant, but when Bunny Rajbhandari was injured in an accident a few years ago, it was a life-changing moment that galvanised him to set up O! Momo.

Rajbhandari had been cooking his momos (Nepalese dumplings) and dishes for nearly a decade before opening his restaurant. In between office jobs, he ran a catering business and sometimes that meant feeding large crowds, such as the masses at Sydney’s Nepal Festival or the Rainbow Serpent Festival in Victoria. “We served over 1500 covers in five to six hours,” he says of the Nepal Festival. “That was a crazy day.”

Undertaking these mega cooking sprees would be exhausting enough without a nine-to-five job, but it took the accident for Rajbhandari to feel he had the "permission" needed to ditch his office work and take on his true passion.

Given the restaurant is called O! Momo, it’s no surprise the dumplings are the most-ordered items here. And you can get very creative with how you enjoy them.  “We have four flavours that can be served in eight different ways,” says Rajbhandari.

In practice, that means you choose your momos to be steamed, pan-fried, stir-fried or run through a deep-fryer. Or they can be seasoned with a green chilli and cumin tomato chutney or freshly dipped in a coriander chutney with a light hit of mint.

Then there’s the top-selling butter chicken momos, smothered in a creamy, high-comfort curry that has an accent of honey and fenugreek leaves. And to multiply the already plentiful “choose your own adventure” possibilities on offer, each meat option is available in vegan form. So if you can’t say yes to the chicken momo, take up the vegetable-filled alternative. It’s lovely tossed through a spiced, chopped tomato salad or coated in a tangy yoghurt and tamarind sauce and topped with crunchy noodles.

O! Momo’s extensive vegan menu is part of its welcoming, inclusive feel: a nicely spiced rogan josh filled with tomato-braised jackfruit stands on its own, for example, and doesn’t feel any less substantial than the goat or chicken version slow-cooked in yoghurt, fennel and cardamom.

The restaurant already has a vibrant, personal, lived-in look, thanks to all the Nepalese decorations throughout: from the colourful prayer flags to the Nepalese singing bowl that sits prominently near one table.

Sometimes, though, O! Momo undergoes the strain that small neighbourhood restaurants experience occasionally, such as the occasional forgotten order or seeing dishes you’d like to try (chilli lamb chops, Nepali black lentil pancakes or a roasted pumpkin curry with ground coconut and yellow lentils) out of commission because the kitchen was cleared out by an unexpectedly big takeaway order.

But with so many dumplings to choose from, and an interesting mix of drinks to counter the heat (such as the Nepali Coke, which is like a marsala-spiced version of the fizzy drink, or the tangy kagata paani lemonade), there’s a lot to redirect your attention and appetite towards. And with O! Momo acting as a production centre for the business’s frozen, ready-to-eat and snacks range, you can still get a taste of the menu in many other ways.

The Food and Drug Administration flagged the issue in an online statement to medical professionals, saying the result could be years of shortages of supplies used in heart surgery, knee replacements, C-sections and many other procedures.

The warning follows the recent closure of several sterilization facilities that use ethylene oxide. The gas is critical for cleaning medical equipment, but it can be hazardous at elevated levels and is increasingly being scrutinized by state health and environmental officials.

Sterilization is a daily process at hospitals and many other health care facilities, used to remove bacteria from medical scopes, catheters, surgical kits and other reusable instruments. Hospitals use various cleaning methods, including heat, steam and radiation. But the oxide gas is the only method for cleaning many devices made from plastic, metal or glass, according to the FDA. About half of all sterilized medical devices in the U.S. are cleaned with the gas, according to studies cited by the agency.

Exposure to dangerous levels of ethylene oxide can cause cancer including leukemia and lymphoma, according to the National Institutes of Health. Factories that emit the gas are subject to safety standards by both state and federal environmental laws.

Earlier this year, Illinois authorities closed a large plant owned by sterilization company Sterigenics after detecting high outdoor levels of the gas. This month, the company announced the plant would not reopen.

Another Sterigenics plant in Georgia has been closed for maintenance since August after state officials detected potentially dangerous emissions at the Atlanta facility. The company has been working to reduce emission levels from the plant.

Is It Safe for Kids to Eat Keto?

With so many people hopping on the keto diet bandwagon, you may be wondering whether it’s a meal plan appropriate for the whole family — including the kids. If you’re already eating according to the keto diet, it would definitely be more convenient to only have to make one dinner for everyone, but is that a good idea? SheKnows spoke with nutritionists to find out whether the keto diet is safe for kids, and how to make healthy and delicious modifications to meals that are good for everyone.

Is the keto diet safe for kids?

We have to start by saying that each of the nutritionists we spoke to said that the keto diet isn’t recommended for kids — either for weight loss or health purposes.

“While fat is essential for kids’ health, so are carbohydrates. Restrictions of any type are not suggested. An inclusive approach is key for building sustainable healthy habits,” Rachel Fine, a registered dietitian and owner of To The Pointe Nutrition  a nutrition counseling firm in New York City tells SheKnows. “I worry that this diet shines carbohydrates in a bad light, and carbohydrates coming from sources like whole grains, fruits, and veggies offer a host of beneficial nutrients for the body.”

In fact, Dr. Josh Axe, founder of Ancient Nutrition and author of the best-selling book Keto Diet says that despite its popularity, the keto diet still isn’t recommended as a first-line approach for encouraging weight loss among kids and teens, mostly because more studies are needed to determine long-term effects and any risks that may be involved. 

So why isn’t the keto diet a good idea for children? According to Lisa Richards, nutritionist and creator of the Candida Diet, the ketogenic diet causes the body to enter a state of ketosis, which results in fat burning as a primary source of fuel. If allowed to advance, it can lead to ketoacidosis, which is a more serious condition where the blood becomes acidic and can be life-threatening, she explains. “This is due to the body burning fat at such a rapid pace that the liver cannot keep up with processing ketones,” Richards tells SheKnows. “Because a child may be unable to tell when they have entered ketoacidosis it is not recommended for children to follow keto.” 

According to Axe, some experts worry that the keto diet may be harmful for children because they need at least a moderate amount of carbs to support growth and to be mentally and physically active.“Concerns include the chance that limiting your child’s carb intake may turn them into a picky eater, cause them to develop nutrient deficiencies, or increase their risk for issues like low bone density, constipation, fatigue, irritability and cravings due to low fiber and low calorie intake,” he tells SheKnows.

By the time kids are teenagers, it may be acceptable for them to try out a keto diet, Richards says. And when in doubt, talk to your child’s doctor. “The younger your child is, the more important it is to get clearance from your doctor first,” Axe says.

How can parents make keto meals kid-friendly? 

Thanks to the popularity of the keto diet in recent years you can now find plenty of ideas online and in cookbooks for healthy, family-friendly high-fat, low-carb meals. “Once your doctor has cleared you to start your child on keto, if you’re following a ‘clean keto diet’ — meaning one that includes whole foods and minimally processed ingredients — then you can feed your children the same things you’re eating,” Axe says. 

Allow your child to eat until they feel satisfied, encouraging them to fill up on healthy fats that are not only keto-approved, but also beneficial for many other reasons. Examples of the types of foods to emphasize include olive oil, coconut oil, avocado and avocado oil, nuts and seeds, grass-fed butter, ghee, eggs, quality cheeses, salmon and other fish and grass-fed meats.

While adults may choose to closely monitor their protein intake on the keto diet, Axe says that this isn’t recommended for children on low-carb diets. “Allow your child to choose how much protein they need to eat to feel full and energized,” he says. “Also, remember that the keto diet doesn’t need zero carbs, so your family can still eat things like beans, berries and yogurt in small amounts. Just choose your carb sources wisely and avoid things like grains, bread, rice, pasta, juice and other sweetened drinks.” Along the same lines, limit the amount of processed fats and meats you feed your children, such as heavy whipping cream, processed cheeses, bacon, sausage, fried foods and cold cuts.

In addition to serving your family healthy fats and proteins, be sure to offer a variety of non-starchy vegetables, ideally with all meals. According to Axe, vegetables are essential for providing fiber, vitamins and minerals. The best types of veggies to eat on the keto diet include all leafy greens, cruciferous veggies like broccoli and Brussel sprouts, peppers, green beans, asparagus, zucchini, cucumbers and most other colorful vegetables. 

“Even if your child isn’t on a low-carb diet, these same foods can be included in any balanced eating plan that includes lots of variety of essential nutrients,” he notes.

Vanna White, the iconic letter-revealer on Wheel of Fortune, said the show’s passionate fans helped her cope with the death of her fiancé in 1986.

At the time, just four years after Vanna joined Wheel of Fortune, her fiancé—the Young and the Restless actor John Gibson—died in a plane crash near Van Nuys airport in Los Angeles, when the small plane he was flying took a nosedive.

“It was May 17, 1986,” Vanna told People. “The second I heard about it, I fell to my knees. It was just devastating.”

Following John’s death, she received an outpouring of support from the show’s audience. “I heard from so many people who had shared the same experience of losing someone instantly in an accident, and that really helped me,” she said. “I didn’t feel like I was alone. Because when something like that happens, you immediately think you’re the only one.”

Four years after John’s death, she married George Santo Pietro, a restauranteur. But the faced a tragedy in 1992, when Vanna suffered a miscarriage after announcing her pregnancy on Wheel of Fortune. (The answer? “Vanna’s Pregnant.”)

Again, fan support helped her get through it. “You have to take their support and try to be strong. It’s so hard, but you just have to think, ‘What would they want me to do?’ Though she later had two “beautiful, healthy” children, she says the miscarriage was traumatic. “But losing a child—there’s nothing good about that.”

Aside from family, friends, and fans, Vanna embraced her faith during these tough times. “I’m a Christian and have always had my own personal relationship with God,” she said. “I don’t preach about it, because everyone’s entitled to their own beliefs. But I pray. I pray every day.”

Doing anything that gets you out of breath counts as being active. This could include fast walking, climbing stairs or doing more strenuous housework or gardening. 

Losing weight if you’re overweight can also help control blood sugar levels.

There’s a new place to find aloe vera in the grocery store and it’s in the beverage aisle. You may be familiar with the benefits of using aloe vera for topical uses like sunburn, dermatitis, acne, and other skin issues, but now drinking aloe vera has popped up as a new trend. We’re here to tell you why you should be consuming the healthy beverage. 

Aloe vera is native to drier parts of the world (via BMC Evolutionary Biology), but we have found ways to cultivate it and grow it anywhere (even in our homes). Aloe has become so popular that it’s found in many skin and hair products like moisturizers, sun screen, and shampoo. Drinking aloe vera juice does more than take care of your skin and hair, though. It can also boost your immune system, curb digestive issues, and control blood sugar (via Marie Claire UK). 

The health benefits of drinking aloe vera juice

According to the Indian Journal of Dermatology, aloe vera has 75 active components that include vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids, and amino acids. It contains some of the most important vitamins and minerals like vitamins B, C, E, and folic acid (via Healthline). 

Incorporating the juice into your daily routine can help ease digestive disorders like constipation or gas by normalizing the healthy bacteria in your gut and adding needed water to your intestines. The juice is also known to control blood sugar levels and could potentially benefit people with pre-diabetes or type 2 diabetes (via Medical News Daily). The benefits seem endless. 

Melissa Eboli, a certified nutritional chef and wellness counselor, told Aaptiv that beneficial as it may be, you shouldn’t drink gallons of aloe vera juice a day. Consumption involves being smart about your intake. She suggests drinking eight ounces or putting some in a juice or smoothie every day. That’s because aaloe vera juice can have some side effects as it contains latex (which some people are allergic to), has laxative effects, lowers potassium, and can cause stomach cramping (via Food NDTV). Too much of something good isn’t always a good thing.

Drink pure aloe vera juice for the most benefits

One thing to note about this seemingly magical elixir is that finding pure aloe vera juice can be hard. Your average grocery store is going to carry aloe juices that aren’t properly processed and leaves the juice with little or no nutrients (via Journal of Food Science and Technology). Making your own aloe vera juice is the best and most beneficial way to obtain all nutrients (via Style Craze). To make your own juice, take one mature leaf (from the bottom of the plant) and cut through the outer layer to expose the gel inside. Scoop all the gel out of the leaf, then mix it into a glass of water or with another juice like tulsi, amla, and giloy (via NDTV Food).

Before diving into this health food trend, it’s important to look into how aloe vera might affect your medication, so consult a doctor before drinking the juice regularly (via Well + Good). Overall, aloe vera juice is great for the body if consumed correctly.

First African American Man to Get a Face Transplant Is ‘On the Road to Recovery’

After months of waiting for the right donor, the first African American man to undergo a full face transplant is recovering from a successful procedure.

Robert Chelsea, 68, finally underwent the surgery in July, after a year and a half on the face transplant list. He was first offered a donor face in May 2018, but the skin tone was so much lighter than his own that he was hesitant to accept it. Chelsea was fearful that he would be “a totally different looking person,” he told TIME.

Chelsea has led a difficult life the last few years — he was left severely disfigured after he was hit by a drunk driver in 2013. He underwent 30 surgeries during his year and a half in the hospital, but doctors could not reconstruct his lips, part of his nose and his left ear. The lack of lips made eating and drinking taxing — Chelsea had to tilt his head back when he consumed food or water so it wouldn’t fall out of his mouth.

But Chelsea was fine with waiting for the right match for a new face, even if it would be tough to find. There are a lack of black donors of any type, and only 17 percent of African American patients in need of an organ transplant received one in 2015 — far less than the 30 percent of white patients who found a donor.

“It is vitally important for individuals of all races and ethnicities to consider organ donation, including the donation of external grafts, such as face and hands,” Alexandra Glazier, President and CEO of New England Donor Services, said in a statement released by Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, which performed Chelsea’s transplant. “Unlike internal organs, the skin tone of the donor may be important to finding a match.”

Chelsea finally got his match in July 2019, from a 62-year-old man with a near-identical skin tone who had suddenly died.

“Losing a loved one and being asked something like this … I can’t imagine,” Chelsea told TIME. “I do feel hopeful that I can pick up some of the pieces that the family may have lost.”

After a 16-hour surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital requiring over 45 doctors and nurses, Chelsea became the first African American to undergo a full face transplant, and just the 15th person nationwide.

Chelsea healed quickly, and was able to eat, talk and breathe on his own after just ten days. He now wants to shed light on the importance of organ donation, and encourage more people to do it with his nonprofit Donor’s Dream.

“I was concerned about humanity way before this surgery,” he said. “We must help one another. That’s the way I felt, and this experience has only validated that even more.”

Chelsea still has more healing to do, and has been at the hospital for follow-up care. But he’s doing well.

“This experience has been an incredible journey for me, filled at times with many challenges,” he said in a statement. “Today, however, I am thrilled to say that I’m on the road to recovery thanks to the incredible team of doctors and staff at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the love and support of my family and friends, and my unwavering faith.”
