Shawn Johnson East Reveals She Was in Labor for 22 Hours Before Welcoming Daughter Via C-Section

The Easts announced their new arrival on Monday, after first revealing they were expecting in April (one year after Johnson East revealed she’d suffered a miscarriage) with a sweet Instagram photo shoot.

“What up @theeastbaby,” the football player, 28, captioned a video of his new family of three, while Johnson East wrote alongside a black-and-white snapshot, “You are our everything. Welcome to the world baby girl.”

Three days later, the former Olympic gymnast opened up on Instagram about how she endured 22 hours of labor before doctors delivered her baby via cesarean section. “I went in with such a stubborn mindset of thinking the only way I could bring our baby into the world was naturally. No meds no intervention,” Johnson East wrote alongside a black-and-white photo of her family in the hospital.

“At 14 hours when I chose to get an epidural I felt guilty,” she continued. “At 22 hours when we were told I had to get a c section I felt like I had failed. But after holding our sweet girl in my arms and being told everything went well and she had made it to us safely I [couldn’t] have cared less.”

Shawn Johnson East and family

Shortly before giving birth, Johnson East recorded an episode of Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner‘s Hot Marriage. Cool Parents podcast, where she opened up about losing her first pregnancy two years ago and how she blamed herself at first even though the doctor told her right out the gate that the miscarriage was not her fault.

“I felt so sad and guilty that I had done something wrong to lose this child,” said the then-mother-to-be, adding of her doctor’s comments, “I remember that just bringing me to tears because I was like, ‘How can you say that? ‘Cause I must’ve done something wrong.’ “

And the guilt went even further than just short-term actions Johnson East thought could’ve caused the loss. In her mind, the blame went as far back as her gymnastics years, when she competed as a child and teenager before retiring from the sport in 2012, at the age of 20.

“I had had testing done and blood work done and [doctors] said everything was good, which was a good reassurance. But again, at that time of miscarriage, I couldn’t help but think I did enough damage to my body at a young age that it was almost, like, payback,” she said.

How Kourtney Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian's Relationship Has Changed Since Becoming Moms

After watching the Kardashians and Jenners interact for more than a decade on television, there’s no denying that they are one of the closest (or, dare we say, klosest) families in Hollywood.

And while they’re thankful for their tight-knit bond, sisters Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian admit that their relationship has changed ever since they all become parents.

“I think that being a mom and also having an opinion of one another is a really fine line,” Khloé, mom to 18-month-old daughter True, tells PEOPLE.

Kourtney — who’s mom to sons Reign Aston, 5 next month, and Mason Dash, 10 next month, plus daughter Penelope Scotland, 7 — agrees. “I think it is hard to not feel the need to chime in when it comes to what we’re doing in our family, because we are so close,” she says.

“We’re just used to exerting our opinions,” adds the Poosh founder, 40.

While Kourtney, Khloé and Kim Kardashian West do share their feelings with each other about parenting, they try to give each other space, too.

“I definitely think that we’re such different moms, so we try to let each other do our own thing,” says Khloé, 35. “But I think it’s good that we go to each other for those things and we know we always have each other.”

The best part of having their own children now, all the sisters agree, is having them grow up with so many cousins in the family.

“Oh it is the best thing ever, it really is,” Khloé says. “Especially because Kim and I, we have our daughters [True and Chicago, 21 months] who are three months apart and with Kylie [Jenner] too [with daughter Stormi, 21 months]. It is such a blessing to have them grow up together.”

She adds, “And Penelope is so maternal. She loves to take care of everyone and it’s really sweet. They all get along so well and it’s such a blessing to have that experience.”

Lizzo Reacts to Viral 2nd Grade Teacher Remixing Her Song For Kids

One of the greatest singers of our time, Lizzo, is more than just a mega-talented recording artist. She’s a beacon of self-love and an inspiration to those who are searching for a boost of positivity. For that reason, Dorothy Mallari, a second-grade teacher in Pittsburg, California, taught her students a remix to Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” to lift their confidence. Because let’s face it: learning math, finishing homework, and making new friends is not easy.

‘Truth Hurts’“Let’s be great / ‘Cause I know we are great,” the students sing as Mallari dances on a table. “I just took an ELA test / Turns out I’m 100 percent that smart / Yeah I got math problems / That’s the student in me,” the lyrics went.

The Los Medanos Elementary teacher had no idea that her classroom’s performance of the PG-rated Lizzo song would go viral. “I didn’t think I’d have that impact, we just try to make learning fun here,” she told NBC Bay Area. But once the video was featured on the Pittsburg Unified School District’s Facebook page earlier this week and garnered more than 6,000 likes as of this morning, the inspiring anthem spread to the far corners of the Internet. Even Lizzo herself signed off on the video with massive approval.

“Ur right.. this IS the best thing I’ve watched today,” the musician tweeted

What’s more, Lizzo surprised Mallari and her second-grade class on Good Morning America with a special message. “You are 100 percent the future,” she said, referencing a quote from the remix. “You’re so bright and so beautiful and so talented, so keep it up and I hope to see y’all one day. I want to drop in on your class, so hopefully we can make that happen,” she concludes, crossing her fingers.

For Mallari, teaching her students catchy lyrics to popular beats is nothing new. According to KTVU, every year her classroom is taught a song that reflects a specific learning experience. Last year, they learned a Drake remix about “flexible seating and classroom culture.”

If every teacher took a cue from Dorothy Mallari, our little “worker bees” as the lyric goes, would have a way easier time getting out of bed in the morning.

Bekah Martinez Will Breast-Feed Ruth 'as Long as' She Can: It's Not 'Weird'

In it for the long haul! Bekah Martinez shared her plans for nursing her 9-month-old daughter, Ruth.

“I get the question often: ‘How long are you going to breast-feed for?’” the Bachelor alum, 24, captioned a photo of her little one feeding on her Thursday, November 7, Instagram Story. “As long as I can and both of us want to. There’s nothing f–king weird about a 2-year-old still nursing. It’s bonding time, soothing time and boosts the immune system. it’s only weird if you’ve still got it in your head that breasts are inherently sexual, even between mother and child and if that’s the case, who’s the weird one?”

The former reality star went on to describe her nursing schedule now that she’s finishing her art degree at the University of California Irvine. “In order to keep my milk supply up, I nurse as frequently and as long as I possibly can on days I’m not at school,” Martinez explained. “Having baby empty your breasts as much as possible (yes empty!!) sends the signal to your body to produce more milk. … Furthermore I don’t pump unless I’m at school. I supplement with formula on these days so I don’t put pressure on myself to produce enough milk for when I’m gone. For me, more stress = less milk.”

Initially, the California native and Grayston Leonard’s daughter had “trouble taking bottles” with her mom back at college. “She pretty much went on strike and only drank like 4 ounces the first few days I was gone at school,” the former ABC personality explained. “But eventually, I think she realized she needed to give in and takes a bottle really well now. … She does not take a bottle for night feedings. Only mama will do for her! And we haven’t eliminated night feedings yet because she’s in a pretty low weight percentile.”

On top of that, the little one eats solids “as often as possible,” ranging from avocado and sprouted bread to beans and goat cheese.

Martinez and the rock climbing gym owner, 31, welcomed Ruth in February. In August, the new mom told Us Weekly exclusively about their plans to expand their family.

“I would be fine with five or six,” she revealed. “Maybe just five. But for now, we want to keep it just [Ruth] for a couple of years. We can travel with her really easily, so we want to stick with her and then go for the rest.”

Martinez previously vied for Arie Luyendyk Jr.‘s heart on season 22 in 2018.

Then he’ll wave to everyone shopping at the Silos.”

“He’s eating up this fame thing. Crew is really in his element!” the proud dad adds.

Also parents to daughters Emmie Kay, 9, and Ella Rose, 13, plus sons Duke, 11, and Drake, 14, the Fixer Upper stars say the addition of Crew has been a blessing for the whole family.

Joanna Gaines Reveals How She and Chip Instill Kindness in Their Children: “We Teach Them Their Words Really Matter”

And the couple’s older children just can’t seem to get enough of baby Crew, either.

“The kids all dote on him in a real adorable way,” says Chip. “They’re all paternal and maternal in their own ways and that’s been fun to kind of see that shake out.”

“We’re a little bit nervous, honestly, because he kind of rules the roost,” jokes Chip. “We’re creating this only-child kind of environment even though there’s so many kids, so we’re going to get the worst of both worlds.”

Kristen Bell Says She Uses Frozen Characters as a Way to Resolve Conflicts with Her Kids

Kristen Bell has a special approach when it comes to settling arguments between her daughters, and it involves calling in Elsa and Anna for backup.

The 39-year-old actress — who shares daughters Lincoln, 6, and Delta Bell, 4, with husband Dax Shepard — spoke to PeopleTV at the Los Angeles premiere of Frozen 2 on Thursday, where she revealed she uses the popular Disney siblings she and actress Idina Menzel voice to help calm down tensions between her own girls.

“I don’t make them watch the clips, but when I, on a daily basis, watch them try and wring each other’s necks, I say ‘Hm, would Anna and Elsa do this, would Anna and Elsa feel this way about their sister? What would Anna and Elsa do?’ ” Bell shared.

“That’s the power of story, right?” said Bell. “They respect this story so much and they know this narrative and they know these girls care, so it’s an easy way to pop them out of their anger and think about being kind for a second.”

In early October, Bell spoke with PEOPLE about how “excited” her two daughters are to see the new movie.

“They also already know the whole plot line and all the songs, and I have yet to make them sign an NDA, so I could be screwed because they’re pretty chatty,” she said, adding that she’s known the songs in the sequel for years now.

“I’ve been singing them the songs for a couple years now because we’ve been working on it for two and a half years,” she said.

“They are very excited even though they know everything that happens,” the Veronica Mars star added. “They were not as into Frozen one, they were only into Elsa and Anna because their friends were, but I think they’re going to be into Frozen 2.”

Putting her family first! Kourtney Kardashian is taking a step back from Keeping Up With the Kardashians to be with her three kids.

“I just decided to spend more time as a mom and put more of my energy there,” the reality star, 40, told Entertainment Tonight on Thursday, November 7. “But I’m not saying goodbye. I think you’ll have to see more of it on the new season, season 18. It isn’t airing yet but it’s being filmed.”

Although Khloé Kardashian will “miss” having her older sister on the show, the Revenge Body host, 35, said, “We love Kourtney … whatever she decides to do. I feel like it’s a revolving door, so Kourtney might leave this week, [but] she’ll be back. They all come back.”

Shawn Johnson Felt 'Guilty' Getting C-Section After 22-Hour Labor

Shawn Johnson was beating herself up when she found out she could not deliver her and Andrew East’s first child naturally.

22 hours of labor to end in a c section. I went in with such a stubborn mindset of thinking the only way I could bring our baby into the world was naturally. No meds no intervention. At 14 hours when I chose to get an epidural I felt guilty. At 22 hours when we were told I had to get a c section I felt like I had failed. But after holding our sweet girl in my arms and being told everything went well and she had made it to us safely I could have cared less. My/our world no longer has anything to do with us but everything to do with her. It’s all for her and I will forever do anything for this girl that I love more than I ever could imagine. A love no one can ever prepare you for. @andrewdeast I meant it in the hospital when I said you will forever be my number one but she will now forever be OUR number one together.Thank you to the incredible doctors and nurses who brought our baby girl into the world safely and to the best husband/daddy in the world for being there every step of the way. 📸 @tealephotography

A post shared byShawn Johnson East (@shawnjohnson) on

“22 hours of labor to end in a c section,” the Olympic gymnast, 27, captioned a Thursday, November 7, Instagram photo of herself and the professional football player, 28, smiling down at their daughter. “I went in with such a stubborn mindset of thinking the only way I could bring our baby into the world was naturally. No meds, no intervention. At 14 hours when I chose to get an epidural, I felt guilty. At 22 hours when we were told I had to get a C-section, I felt like I had failed.”

The Winning Balance author explained this further in her YouTube birth vlog on Thursday. “I’m weak,” she told the Indiana native from the hospital bed. “I’m getting an epidural. I should be able to do it naturally.”

The Dancing With the Stars season 8 winner had a change of heart, though, once her bundle of joy arrived. “After holding our sweet girl in my arms and being told everything went well and she had made it to us safely, I could have cared less,” the Iowa native continued in her Instagram caption. “My/our world no longer has anything to do with us but everything to do with her. It’s all for her and I will forever do anything for this girl that I love more than I ever could imagine. A love no one can ever prepare you for.”

The couple, who wed in 2016, announced in April that Johnson was pregnant nearly two years after suffering a miscarriage.

The “Couple Things” podcast hosts felt both “guarded” and “excited,” she explained to Us Weekly exclusively after their Instagram reveal. “When we went to the first ultrasound and got to see the baby move, it just kind of hit home,” Johnson said. “I went into, like, protective mom, like, take care of my body. He went into protective dad, protective husband, just making sure everything’s OK.”

The new mom shared the first photos of their daughter on Monday, November 4, but she and East have yet to announce the little one’s name.

Shawn Johnson Reveals She Was in Labor for 22 Hours Before Welcoming Daughter Via C-Section

Shawn Johnson East is candidly opening up about her daughter’s birth after it did not go to plan.

Three days after confirming that she and her husband Andrew East had welcomed their first child, the former Olympic gymnast opened up on Instagram about how she endured 22 hours of labor before doctors delivered her baby via a C-section.

Shawn, 27, admitted that she initially felt “guilty” and like she “had failed” for choosing to get an epidural and not delivering her baby naturally, but said her feelings soon changed once she held her daughter for the first time.

“22 hours of labor to end in a c section,” she began alongside a black-and-white photo of her family in the hospital. “I went in with such a stubborn mindset of thinking the only way I could bring our baby into the world was naturally. No meds no intervention.”

“At 14 hours when I chose to get an epidural I felt guilty,” she continued. “At 22 hours when we were told I had to get a c section I felt like I had failed. But after holding our sweet girl in my arms and being told everything went well and she had made it to us safely I could have cared less.”

“My/our world no longer has anything to do with us but everything to do with her,” added Shawn. “It’s all for her and I will forever do anything for this girl that I love more than I ever could imagine. A love no one can ever prepare you for.”

The new mother went on to gush about her baby girl, giving a sweet shout out to the doctors and nurses who helped deliver her. She also praised her husband for his love and support through this time.

“@andrewdeast I meant it in the hospital when I said you will forever be my number one but she will now forever be OUR number one together,” she wrote. “Thank you to the incredible doctors and nurses who brought our baby girl into the world safely and to the best husband/daddy in the world for being there every step of the way.”

Shawn and Andrew’s journey to welcoming their daughter was also documented on their joint YouTube channel.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

The video, which was also uploaded on Thursday, began shortly after a 40-week pregnant Shawn scheduled to get induced and continued until Oct. 29 at 7:00 p.m. just before the former gymnast had her C-section following 22 hours of labor.

At one point during the long process, Shawn shared with her husband that the doctor was “a little nervous that the baby won’t fit” and described her contractions as the “worst period cramps you could ever have, every two to three minutes.”

Later in the video, after deciding to get an epidural, Shawn admitted that she felt “weak.” When Andrew, 28, asked why she was bummed to get an epidural, she told him, “I should be able to do it naturally!”

The professional football player then reassured his wife that she was doing great before sharing his excitement to start “a new phase of life.”

“I’m excited and freaked out all at the same time!” he said at the end of the video.

Shawn Johnson East and Andrew East with their baby

Since confirming that their baby girl had arrived on Monday, Shawn and Andrew have been soaking up parenthood.

Shortly after revealing that the baby had made her grand entrance, the couple gave the first-look at their daughter’s face on the Instagram account they created for her.

In the shot, the little girl looked up at the camera as she was swaddled in a white blanket with a pink hat on her head.

On Wednesday, the former gymnast shared a photo of herself and her husband giving their daughter a high-five, captioning the sweet shot, ““Hi five dad!” 😊 @theeastbaby @andrewdeast #family”

Shawn has also been documenting the many snuggles she’s enjoyed with her baby on her Instagram Stories.

“Just an update since we’ve been quite[sic]. Just enjoying, crying, sleep-depriving our way through these first couple of weeks with our most perfect baby girl,” she wrote on Thursday beside one shot of her daughter sleeping on her chest under a blanket.

“She is the most beautiful miracle we have ever been given,” Shawn added in a separate post.

Why Shawn Johnson Says She Felt ''Guilty'' For Having a C-Section

Shawn Johnson is getting honest about her labor experience.

The former Olympic gymnast gave birth to a beautiful baby girl earlier this month. Shawn, who is married to husband Andrew East, has been candid about her journey to motherhood. Now, in a beautiful post, the former gymnast revealed the reasons she felt guilty about undergoing a c-section after her 22-hour labor.

“22 hours of labor to end in a c section,” Shawn captioned a photo with Andrew and her baby girl in the hospital. “I went in with such a stubborn mindset of thinking the only way I could bring our baby into the world was naturally. No meds no intervention. At 14 hours when I chose to get an epidural I felt guilty. At 22 hours when we were told I had to get a c section I felt like I had failed.”

Shawn went on to reveal that her feelings completely changed once she got to hold her daughter for the first time.

“But after holding our sweet girl in my arms and being told everything went well and she had made it to us safely I could have cared less,” she explained. “My/our world no longer has anything to do with us but everything to do with her. It’s all for her and I will forever do anything for this girl that I love more than I ever could imagine. A love no one can ever prepare you for.”

Of course, she couldn’t have done it all without her loving husband by her side. “@andrewdeast I meant it in the hospital when I said you will forever be my number one but she will now forever be OUR number one together,” she continued.
“Thank you to the incredible doctors and nurses who brought our baby girl into the world safely and to the best husband/daddy in the world for being there every step of the way.”

Gabrielle Union's Birthday Message to Baby Kaavia Will Blow You Away

Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images

Bring it on feelings!

It’s a very special day in Gabrielle Union-Wade and Dwyane Wade‘s house. If you didn’t already guess, it’s baby Kaavia James Union Wade‘s first birthday!

To mark the special occasion, the Bring It On star took to Instagram with a message so many parents will be able to relate to.

“Scared to hold you. Scared to burp you. Scared to reveal I have no clue what I’m doing. Scared to go to work. Scared to stay home. Scared when you sleep. Scared when you wake up. Scared I’m not living up to some impossible standard of motherhood. Scared I’d lose myself. Scared I’d be exposed as a failure, as less than, not as good as, not as comfortable as, not as… anything,” Gabrielle began her caption. “But there you were, everyday, looking up at me, like ‘gurl, you got this!'”

The America’s Got Talent judge continued, “When I let go of my fears of judgement and just did my best and recognized that my best would and could change from day to day and life would magically go on… Man, I finally allowed myself to just enjoy you @kaaviajames and relax into the peace of imperfection.”

If that didn’t get you emotional AF, there’s more.

I'm 1!!! BYOB. Bring your own bacon, cuz that thick cut maple is all me. ?????

A post shared by Kaavia James Union Wade (@kaaviajames) on

“1 year in and your whole village stays smiling,” Gabrielle concluded. “The family you know and all the cyber aunties and uncles you may never meet, we celebrate you.” Awww!

The message resonated with thousands of fans and followers including Dwyane who left more than a dozen heart emojis. Tina Lawson called the post “beautiful.” As for Jeannie Mai, she had one request for baby Kaavia.

“Can u tell mom to write a book?” The Real co-host asked in the comments. “Thx.” Ummm, can we co-sign?

So what does today have in store? Both parents are staying mum for now. But when we looked on Kaavia’s Instagram, which is managed by mom and dad, we got a sense of what’s on the wish list.

“I’m 1. BYOB. Bring your own bacon, cuz that thick cut maple is all me,” the post stated.

“This little girl has brought a light and joy to my life I didn’t even know was possible,” Gabrielle previously shared on Instagram. “Without words, she has challenged me to be a better version of myself, and on the daily has me busting out in fits of laughter.” It’s a great time to be a Wade!

The National Toy Hall of Fame picks names the toys that will stand the test of time. (Photo: Photo illustration)

Ah, the nostalgia of childhood toys.

Every year since 1998, the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, N.Y., has inducted toys into its National Toy Hall of Fame.

The latest additions, announced Thursday, include the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering, Matchbox cars and the coloring book.

Last year, it added the Magic 8 Ball, Uno and pinball.

It’s HOF list now includes 71 toys, all of which are housed inside the museum.

Obvious favorite include Atari, Barbie, Candy Land, Etch A Sketch, Mr. Potato Head, Legos and, of course, Play-Doh.

Some might be considered misses like cardboard boxes, blankets and sticks.

The winners – chosen each year by a committee of national experts, including toy collectors, professors and psychologists – stand the test of time, are widely recognized and encourage learning, creativity and discovery through play over generations, the museum says.

Did your favorite make the list? Here is the full list of toys in the Hall of Fame:

Ready for Christmas! Ronnie Wood Takes His Twin Daughters, 3, to Lights Display with Wife Sally

Ronnie Wood and family

Ronnie Wood‘s family is already in the Christmas spirit!

The Rolling Stones musician brought his brood out to witness the Carnaby Christmas lights switch-on Thursday, attending the event on London’s Carnaby Street.

Wood, 72, posed for photos while holding one of his twin daughters (Gracie Jane and Alice Rose, 3), as wife Sally held the other little girl and the proud parents smiled for the camera.

Alice and Gracie were too adorable in their coordinating winter attire, which included leopard-print coats to combat the cool temperatures and matching hot-pink headphones.

Wood and Sally tied the knot in a private London ceremony in December 2012, according to a report in the U.K.’s Sun, which also published photos of the bride and groom on their happy day.

In December 2015, a rep for the guitarist confirmed to PEOPLE that the couple were expecting twins. Gracie and Alice are the first children for Woods’ theater-producer spouse.

The girls — whom Wood welcomed with Sally on May 30, 2016 — are the rocker’s fifth and sixth kids. He’s also dad to four adult children: Tyrone, Leah, Jamie and Jesse.

Sally left the band’s tour in February 2016 while her husband took the stage in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, returning home for fear of the Zika virus — prompting Wood’s big announcement that her babies on the way were girls.

“My wife @sallywood has not been ‘sent home’ from the @rollingstones tour!” Wood tweeted at the time. “Our twins come first and we decided the Zika virus & excessive flying was too dangerous for them.”

He continued, “Our baby GIRLS are growing beautifully. Thank you for the love!” alongside a hand-drawn photo of Sally and their then-daughters-to-be.

The Weirdest Things Newborns Do — Including Fake Diarrhea

Bringing home a newborn baby is one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do. And, as you’ll quickly find out, it’s also one of the scariest things you’ll ever do, especially when you’re an inexperienced new mom. The truth is is that while newborns are adorable tiny humans who smell wonderful and sleep the majority of the time, they can also do some really strange things that you might not be expecting to encounter.

You might be ready for the middle-of-the-night feedings, the constant dirty diapers, and the never-ending spit-up, but there are plenty of other odd things newborns do that can leave you feeling flustered at best and panicked and scared at worst. It’s not unusual to feel the urge to call your pediatrician when experiencing some of these newborn quirks, but it’s also important to remember that many of the weird things babies do are actually completely normal and probably even harmless.

In other words: There may not be any reason to feel alarmed if you experience the below. Of course, you should always give your pediatrician a call if you think something is really wrong, but if your baby is doing any of the below things, rest assured knowing it’s par for the course.

They can stop breathing for up to 10 seconds at a time.

Ten seconds doesn’t seem like a lot of time until you’re anxiously waiting for your baby to take their next breath. If you notice small lapses in breathing like this, you aren’t alone. Miami-based pediatrician Dr. Gary Kramer says this is nothing to stress over, explaining, “Newborns may breathe erratically in the first months of life, alternating between slow and fast breathing and even having periods up to 10 seconds during which they do not breathe.”

You may also notice that they’re breathing this way at night, while they’re in a deep sleep. Fortunately, it won’t last long. Dr. Kramer says, “This is part of normal development referred to as ‘periodic breathing,’ and is entirely normal. They will eventually grow out of this.”

They sleep with their eyes open.

It can be alarming to glance over at your peacefully sleeping baby, only to realize their eyes are open. But don’t worry: this isn’t a sign of a sleep disorder or anything more serious. It’s just the way newborns sleep (as it turns out, the phrase “sleeping like a baby” doesn’t exactly mean a restful sleep). “Newborns cycle through sleep different than older infants do,” says Carrie Bruno, RN, IBCLC, and founder and CEO of The Mama Coach. “Because their brains are developing at a rapid pace, they spend 50% of their sleeping hours in something called ‘active sleep.’”

According to Bruno, active sleep means newborns will appear pretty restless, kicking and grunting without waking themselves up. That’s also the reason they can sleep with their eyes open. While it might be creepy, it’s also necessary. Bruno says, “Active sleep is frequent and important in newborn sleep as it stimulates regions in the brain that contribute to learning.”

They can spit up out of their nose and appear to be choking when they’re not.

Every parent’s worst nightmare is their baby choking. Sometimes, newborns can seem like they’re choking even if they’re perfectly fine, which just seems like a cruel trick of nature. If you notice them gagging with spit-up coming out of their nose, you don’t need to panic right away. Dr. Kramer says, “This is entirely normal, as the nasopharyngeal is one passageway. Infants do not have a way of regulating where the emesis will go. This does not mean that they are choking.”

It should also comfort you to know that it’s actually difficult for healthy newborns to choke. “Parents are worried that babies will aspirate, but the likelihood of that happening in a neurologically normal baby is rare due to the fact that the gag reflex will protect against that,” says Dr. Kramer. If your baby’s complexion is red or pink, that’s a good sign – you should worry if their complexion is white or blue.

They sneeze all the time.

If you notice your baby is sneezing quite often, don’t automatically assume that they picked up a cold in their first few weeks. It’s actually just something infants do. “They breathe through their noses and their nasal passages are so small, you will hear all sorts of snorting and congested sounds,” says Dr. Alison Mitzner, MD, board-certified pediatrician. So don’t worry: your sneezing and stuffy baby is almost definitely perfectly healthy.

They startle often.

Spend a few minutes watching your little one sleep without a swaddle, and you’ll likely notice that they throw their arms out in a dramatic way, as if they’ve just been startled. This is called their Moro reflex, and is completely normal up to about three months old. Dr. Mitzner says, “It is used to assess the baby’s central nervous system at birth.”

Their Moro reflex can be elicited when they are startled, or it can happen when the baby feels a sense of falling. Dr. Mitzner says, “Your pediatrician will check this and ensure the Moro reflex is present and normal.” So, basically, you want them to do this.

They are very, very noisy sleepers.

At this point, it’s pretty clear that infant sleep is anything but peaceful. They can keep their eyes open, they might breathe erratically, they can startle easily, and they make tons of little noises. While some of those noises might seem worrisome, they’re probably just normal baby behavior. “In the first months of life, babies breathe through their noses, which are narrow,” says Dr. Kramer, adding that it can often cause them to whistle.

According to Dr. Kramer, another cause of the noises is something called “laryngomalacia,” which basically means that their upper airway is narrow and floppy. “While lying down, they experience some collapse of the airway, which creates a sensation of noisy breathing due to the turbulence of the airflow,” says Dr. Kramer. “They do, in fact, grow out of this by four to six months.”

They have swollen genitals.

Don’t be alarmed by the appearance of your baby’s not-so-tiny genitals, whether they’re male or female. This is just caused by the natural process of squeezing through a tight birth canal. Bruno says, “The swelling can be caused by maternal hormones or from a prolonged labor where mom receives more fluids. Usually this swelling resolves within two weeks as the hormones from pregnancy and birth disappear, and the extra fluids from birth reabsorb.”

They have what seems like diarrhea, but it’s normal.

How many bowel movements can a small infant possibly make? As it turns out, quite a lot, especially in those first few weeks. Dr. Mitzner says that their diapers will need to be changed often, and their stool might look like diarrhea. She explains, “Breast fed babies typically have a bowel movement after every feeding. It can be very loose, mustardy yellowish, soft, and watery, and parents may think it is diarrhea, but it is not.”

They spit up all day long.

You might think you’re ready for baby spit-up, but you probably aren’t prepared for just how much of it there is. Sometimes it feels like they’re spitting up so much that you wonder how they could possibly be digesting that much food. “Newborn babies spit up because their lower esophageal sphincter (the ring of muscle between their stomach and their espogahus) needs time to strengthen,” says Bruno. “It often isn’t strong enough and your baby’s belly full of milk can come right back up.”

You’ll notice spitting up even more often if your baby gulps in a lot of air while drinking, which can cause gas. Bruno notes that as long as your baby feeds well and is regularly gaining weight, there’s nothing to worry about. If your baby isn’t interested in feeding and isn’t gaining weight, then it’s something you should speak to a pediatrician about.

They can have a face full of acne.

In those first few weeks with your little one, you might start to wonder where the expression “baby soft skin” actually came from. It’s not abnormal for your baby’s face to resemble a teenager’s face, full of little bumps that look like pimples. And they kind of are. Bruno says, “Around 20% of newborns experience newborn acne and it usually occurs between two and six weeks. We aren’t really sure what causes newborn acne, but we think it occurs due to stimulation of newborn’s sweat glands from mom’s hormones, or the inflammatory reaction to yeast that can colonize on baby’s skin.”

Baby acne, as it’s often called, looks like little red, raised bumps, and can appear all over their tiny face and chest. In general, Bruno says it will clear up on its own. If you really want to do something, keep their skin moisturized with a non-scented, hypoallergenic baby lotion, and avoid picking at it at all costs.

Their skin can peel off.

Does it look like your baby is getting over a serious case of dry skin? That’s because they are. Dr. Mitzner says that sitting around in amniotic fluid for nine months can leave them with very dry, flaky skin when they’re brought into the world. “The peeling does resolve on its own and the skin beneath is soft and normal. There is no treatment necessary,” says Dr. Mitzner, adding that it should resolve in a few weeks.

There’s a spot on their head that pulses like it’s alive.

You might know that all babies have a soft spot on their head, but did you know that it actually moves? It might be slightly alarming to notice their head pulsing, but it’s also normal, and is a glimpse at their heartbeat. “Babies are born with open spots on their skulls called fontanelles, which fuse shut usually around the age nine to 18 months,” says Bruno. “They need those open spots to make space for their rapidly growing brains.”

Sterling Shepard Partners with Pampers to Install Changing Tables in Men's Restrooms

Sterling Shepard is stepping up for dads on diaper duty everywhere.

The New York Giants wide receiver, 26, has partnered with Pampers on an ongoing initiative to help install 5,000 changing tables in men’s restrooms by 2021.

“I’m a hands-on dad and I know firsthand that there just aren’t enough changing tables when I’m out and about with my daughter [Cali Clay, 14 months],” Shepard says. “That’s why I’m so excited to partner with Pampers on their commitment to provide 5,000 changing tables for public restrooms across North America by 2021!”

“Not only did I get to help install changing tables at MacArthur Park in N.Y.C., but Pampers teamed up with some of my fellow NFL dads across the country to install changing tables in their local communities,” he adds.

Stay-at-Home Dad Talks Partnering with Pampers to Install 5,000 Changing Tables in Men’s Restrooms

Shepard recalls the experience being “a lot of fun,” saying it was “really special” to have Cali and her mom, Shepard’s pregnant wife Chanel Iman, with him to help install the tables.

“We were excited to install changing stations at MacArthur Park because it’s a special place for the community and a huge draw for families like ours, so it was an easy choice,” the second-time father-to-be tells PEOPLE.

Iman, 28, and Shepard tied the knot in a luxe Beverly Hills wedding in March 2018, just four months after their waterfront engagement in New York City.

They welcomed daughter Cali that summer, celebrating her first birthday this past August at a party where they adorned her with a flower crown, watched her play in a ball pit, blew bubbles — and even received a visit from “Baby Shark” characters!

“Its Cali’s world we’re just living in it 🎈🎈🎈 🎂,” Iman wrote alongside one snap, which featured the birthday girl standing in front of a huge balloon creation spelling out her name with a balloon rainbow beside it, as well as signs promising ice cream, games and pony rides at “Cali’s Land.”

Later that month, the Victoria’s Secret Angel announced that her adorable family would be growing, sharing a photo of herself, Shepard and little Cali smiling widely. Iman also showed off her growing baby bump peeking out underneath a white cropped blouse.

“Excited to announce we will be a family of four soon 🤰🏽👼🏽,” the supermodel wrote in the caption for the sweet snap.

Alec, Hilaria Baldwin Aren't Having More Kids After Baby No. 5: 'This Is It'

Family of seven, and that’s that! Alec Baldwin’s wife, Hilaria Baldwin, is pregnant with the couple’s fifth child, and they don’t plan to add any more babies to their brood.

“How dare you say that? This is it,” the Saturday Night Live star, 61, playfully told Us Weekly exclusively at the New York Special Screening of CROWN VIC hosted by Screen Media on Wednesday, November 6.

The actor and the fitness guru, 35, wed in June 2012 and share Carmen, 6, Rafael, 4, Leonardo, 3, and Romeo, 17 months. Alec and his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, welcomed their now-24-year-old daughter, Ireland, in 1995.

The “Mom Brains” podcast cohost announced in September that they are expecting baby No. 5, five months after suffering a miscarriage. “It is still very early, but we have learned that there is a little person inside of me,” Hilaria wrote on Instagram. “The sound of this strong heart makes me so happy — especially because of the loss we experienced in the spring. We want to share this news as we are excited and don’t want to hide the pregnancy. These first few months are tough with exhaustion and nausea and I don’t want to have to pretend that I feel OK.”

The following month, the pair told their kids the sex of their sibling-to-be. “Our little reveal,” the Living Clearly Method author captioned footage of Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo and Romeo finding four strollers with baby dolls wearing pink onesies. “We’re so excited.”

Throughout her pregnancy, the former yoga instructor has been craving pretzels, Alec told Us on Wednesday. “It’s like a pretzel commercial in my house,” the Emmy winner said. “She’s eating them all the time. Every pregnancy, there’s a thing she eats that I’ve never seen her eat before, something common, and now it’s pretzels.”

Although Hilaria has been nauseous, she is “not going to complain about it,” she told Us exclusively in October. “I feel s–tty, but I’m OK. I’m feeling as I should be feeling.”

Watch Hilary Duff, Matthew Koma's Daughter Banks Walking at 12 Months

It’s official! Hilary Duff and Matthew Koma’s 12-month-old daughter, Banks, has taken her first steps.

“@matthewkoma and I have a walker,” the Younger star, 32, captioned a Wednesday, November 6, video of her little one moving toward her. “Come on,” the actress said from behind the camera. “Yay, mama! You’re doing it, come on.”

The Lizzie McGuire alum and the “Kisses Back” singer, also 32, welcomed their first child together in October 2018 and got engaged in May. Duff also shares son Luca, 7, with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie.

The Texas native’s youngest recently hit another major milestone. “Right now, Banks is getting a couple of teeth,” she told Us Weekly exclusively at the Love Leo Rescue 2nd Annual Cocktails for a Cause event on Wednesday. “She’s decided that her wake-up time is, like, 4 a.m.”

It’s been six months since the toddler learned how to crawl, and Duff shared footage of that moment as well. “We got a mover,” the former Disney Channel star wrote on Instagram in May.

She elaborated on this the following month, telling Us, “She knows what she wants and she gets it. Like, the first time she crawled, Luca was in the door and she saw him in the door frame and … she just wanted to get to him! That’s how she figured out how to put one arm in front of the other and I’m just like, ‘You are an animal. You are a go-getter.’”

Duff and Koma started dating in late 2016. Although the pair broke up in March 2017, they reconciled in the fall of that same year.

“I think having a baby definitely brought us even closer together and we feel happier and more in love than ever and so [the engagement] felt right,” the “Wake Up” singer gushed to Us in June after the New York native’s proposal. “We are looking forward to our long future together. He kind of surprised me and I was like, ‘Yes! Of course! You’re my favorite person in the whole entire world outside of my kids.’”

Only Stay-At-Home Moms Will Laugh At This

Whether you stay home out of desire or out of necessity, there are parts of being a stay-at-home mom that only those living the all-day parenting show will understand. If you’ve done it, you know it’s not easy. Here are some of the humorous realities that we face on the daily, yet still manage to make it through the day alive.

1. Sick days don’t exist.

Your kids won’t ease up if you feel like garbage. If anything, they will make sure to shower you with extra screams and destruction to keep your mind off your raging fever. If mom takes a day off, the whole house goes to hell. Sick or not, the show must go on.

2. Multitasking is your middle name.

You have managed to learn how to cook a meal while breastfeeding, tie shoes with one hand while zipping coats with the other and answer important phone calls while deflecting nerf darts. You pay bills while you clean the house, and you make grocery lists in the shower. You plan birthday parties in your sleep — that’s how good you are.

3. You spend most of the day silently begging for peace and quiet, but you know it’s bad when it happens.

But you know if you get it, something catastrophic is going down. And sometimes, even knowing that, you’re willing to take the risk anyways because you just NEED. A. BREAK.

4. Your best friends are named dry shampoo and perfume.

You might spend your entire day at home, but that doesn’t mean you have time to waste on petty activities like showers or personal hygiene. You slap on some tinted moisturizer and your “good leggings” if you’re really feeling fancy, but most days your fuzzy socks, stretched out yoga pants, and that sweater with the hole in it. Your kids are just going to get boogers and food all over you anyway, so what’s the point?

5. Unlike your working mom counterparts, the more you get done in a day, the LESS money you have.

You killed it as a mom today. You went to the grocery store, you caught up on all the bills, you stocked up the toiletries and got your kid a new pair of shoes for gym class. You signed your toddler up for tumbling and you picked up your husband’s dry cleaning. You were ON. YOUR. GAME! So why after a long day “at the office” is your bank account suffering from withdrawal symptoms? Ughhh.

6. Your “corner office with a window” is mobile.

And it’s usually littered with goldfish crackers, hides dried up french fries, carries a questionable smell, and is coated in something sticky. You frequently find your boss sleeping on the job and staff insubordination is rewarded with Happy Meals and dum-dum suckers.

7. Trips to Target alone count as self-care.

You pamper yourself with a venti coffee and stroll the aisles of pet supplies (even though you don’t haven’t owned a furry friend in years) just to delay your checkout a little longer. You deserve this vacation, and you’re going to soak up every minute in the dollar aisle if that’s what it takes.

8. Bodily functions are part of your daily routine, and you’re not even a doctor.

Your boss asks you to wipe his butt, or claws at your breasts to nurse and it’s a completely acceptable, welcomed even. You frequently step in something wet and have to ask yourself if it’s water, juice, or urine. And either way, you’re not completely grossed out.

9. Your friends who work outside the home don’t understand your job — and you don’t understand them.

Your husband doesn’t fully grasp it either. You hear comments like “if you had a ‘real job’ you would know” or “what did you do all day?” You feel misunderstood and underappreciated, and it’s not because your audience hasn’t mastered fine motor skills yet. You yearn for adult interaction, but when you finally get it, you are so used to speaking toddler through Disney movie song lyrics that you end up saying something completely inappropriate and awkward. You can’t remember what it’s like to have conversations with adults. It’s been that long.

The best part of your job is that your bonuses come in the form of tiny hands wrapped around your neck, little kisses on the cheek by the plumpest, sweetest, tinest lips, and giant “I LOVE YOU’S!” from miniature lispy voices. And when those come, you realize: you don’t care if you laugh at yourself all day. This is the only place you ever want to be.

Alex Rodriguez Jokes He's Only the 'Boss' in Parenting Until Jennifer Lopez Gets Home

For years, Alex Rodriguez commanded stadiums as a star baseball player for the New York Yankees — but when it comes to getting the attention of his kids at home, things aren’t so easy.

In an appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna, Rodriguez, 44, opened up about what it’s like to be a dad to his blended family — and how hard it can be to parent his kids without the help of his fiancée, Jennifer Lopez.

“We have four kids, and no one listens to Dad,” he joked on Wednesday’s episode.

When Rodriguez and Lopez, 50, got engaged in March, they also brought their two families together, creating a tight group of six.

He has two daughters (Ella Alexander, 11, and Natasha Alexander, 15 this month) with his ex Cynthia Scurtis, while Lopez has twins Emme Maribel and Maximilian “Max” David, 11, from her previous marriage to Marc Anthony.

Jennifer Lopez Says Her Twins Would Be “Thrilled” If She Had a Baby with Alex Rodriguez

And when it’s just him at home with the kids and Lopez is away, Rodriguez said, he tries his best to take charge with the parenting duties.

“Before she gets home, I’m the boss,” the former MLB player said on Thursday. “When I get home, I’m security, I’m Uber, I’m the teacher.”

But the minute Lopez walks in the door, he loses his status, he joked. “It’s over, it’s over,” Rodriguez said.

“When she gets home, she’s the boss,” guest host Andy Cohen added.

Rodriguez credited his appreciation for strong women like Lopez to his own childhood and being raised by a single mother.

“I’m drawn to powerful women because of my mother — she had two jobs,” he said. “I have an incredible sister, and I just believe in women’s equality. Women are the future.”

Lopez and Rodriguez have always made it clear that family comes first in their relationship. A source told PEOPLE in March that the couple’s children are excited about their upcoming wedding and have wanted their parents to get married “for a long time.”

“The kids are amazing together,” the source said. “They will all definitely be a huge part of the wedding.”

Jennifer Lopez Says Son Max, 11, Will Walk Her Down the Aisle When She Marries Alex Rodriguez

Lopez told PEOPLE in 2018 that not only did she and her fiancé both readily accept each other’s children, but that her kids clicked immediately with Rodriguez’s own.

“I was so loving to his kids and he was so loving and accepting of mine, and they embraced each other right away,” said the singer and Hustlers actress. “[It was like] ‘I get a new bonus brother and sisters to hang out with all the time and it’s nice.’ “

Rodriguez agreed, and called their kids “best friends” and telling PEOPLE, “We couldn’t have asked for anything better than the four of them getting along as they do.”

Jennifer Garner's 'Classy' School Drop-Off Attire Is Too Relatable

Jennifer Garner is going where many celebrity moms have never gone before: to the bus stop with wet hair wearing nothing but a robe and slippers.

The actress, who shares kids Violet, 13, Seraphina, 10, and Samuel, 7, with ex Ben Affleck, took the expression “I woke up like this” to the next level on Wednesday morning as she shuffled her kids to school. “She barely made the bus on time, but at least her mother kept it classy,” Garner captioned a photo of the cozy ensemble she shared to Instagram. For good measure, she also included some praise hands, a star, and a grandma emoji. (She may not have been dressed, but there’s no arguing she’s not with the times.)

There’s so much to love about this picture. The hastily combed wet hair! The monogrammed robe (adorable)! The fact that she tagged the pottery business that made her mug! But best of all is that she said, “Screw it,” and let someone capture her in all of her disheveled glory.

My kids aren’t old enough for school drop-off yet, so most of what I know comes straight from Big Little Lies, where it’s every mom for herself in a sea of judgment. The show’s dramatization doesn’t seem that far off from reality, either. Just last year, a mom-shamer caught our attention when she posted a mean-spirited rant railing on other parents for their “rat nest hair, no makeup, eyebags” and “morning breath.” Yeah, I’m guessing she doesn’t get many invites for playdates.

Garner, however, doesn’t seem to care about what the mom-shamers might say. Hell, her skin is probably thick enough from her kids giving her mean nicknames for her to even care. Besides, judging from the dozens of comments on her post, parents, both famous and not, loved her look.

“Just reason 1000x why I love you,” celebrity health coach Kelly LeVeque wrote. Another commenter whose profile says he’s 15 put things more bluntly: “hot.”

So next time you’re feeling a little behind, just remember that none of us, truly, has it all together.

How Brooke Burke Spoke to Her Children About College Scandal

Talking about the tough stuff! Brooke Burke had a conversation with her four kids about the college scandal.

“This whole private school system and college application, it’s no joke, especially when there’s a lot of money floating around, so I’m trying to teach my children to appreciate who they are and work harder,” the actress, 48, told Us Weekly and other reporters at the Women’s Guild Cedars-Sinai Annual Luncheon honoring Cindy Crawford and Elyse Walker to support the Women’s Guild Neurology Project on Wednesday, November 6. “If they can’t figure it out, figure it out.”

Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were among dozens of parents named and charged in March for allegedly paying bribes to help their kids get accepted into high-profile universities, including Stanford, Georgetown, Yale, and the University of Southern California.

As for Burke, the Dancing With the Stars season 7 winner wants to make sure that Neriah, 19, Sierra, 17, Heaven, 12, and Shaya, 11, “have integrity and [are] honest and authentic to what” they believe, she told Us.

The Connecticut native has her hands full raising such a big brood, and she revealed in February that she doesn’t parent each of her children in the same way.

“I raise [them] differently,” she explained to Us at the time. “I truly do. Just when you think you figured it out, you got to tweak your rearing skills.”

The ModernMom.com CEO added, “One of the things I always tell women is, ‘Find your own way.’ Everybody’s going to tell you how to do it. Every mom’s out there doing something better than you. And I think we have incredible women’s intuition and we really have to follow that.”

When it comes to coparenting her son and three daughters with David Charvet and Garth Fisher, Burke “takes the high road” for her kids. “Being a parent is selfless,” she told Us. “Learn how to have a working divorce. Have a better relationship with your ex than you had when you were married. That’s the goal!”

The former model was married to Fisher, 61, from 2001 to 2005 and Charvet, 47, from 2011 to 2018.

Naya Rivera's Son Josey Wants to Be on TV After Seeing Mom in 'Glee'

Like mother, like son? Naya Rivera’s 4-year-old son, Josey, had the best reaction to seeing his mom on Glee for the first time.

“He told me the other day because we were watching a song from Glee — he had never really seen it — and he goes, ‘Why I aren’t I on the TV?’” the actress, 32, told Us Weekly and other reporters at the Women’s Guild Cedars-Sinai Annual Luncheon on Wednesday, November 6. “I’m like, ‘You weren’t born yet!’ And he’s like, ‘But I wanna be on TV,’ and I was like, ‘Dun, dun, dun!’ … He’s like, ‘OK, I want to do that too.’”

Not only is Josey interested, but he “definitely” has talent. “He loves to sing, he loves music, he loves to dance and he’s really, really funny,” Rivera explained.

The California native, who welcomed the little one in 2015 with her ex-husband, Ryan Dorsey, told Us in March that Josey is already following in her stylish footsteps as well.

“When I dropped him off this morning at preschool, there was a substitute teacher and she was like, ‘I need to go shopping with you, Josey,’” the Step Up: High Water star revealed at the time. “He was wearing fringe pants.”

While she and Dorsey, 36, share joint physical and legal custody of their son, Rivera still works to balance her career with parenting. But when she does find time for herself, the singer takes full advantage of it.

“When I find little windows here and there, I’m getting better about really making a conscious effort to do that,” she revealed. “I’ll go and get my nails done or get a facial.”

Rivera and the actor tied the knot in July 2014, three months after the end of her engagement to rapper Big Sean, but finalized their divorce in June 2018. “After much consideration, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the former couple told Us in a statement at the time. “Our priority is and always will be our beautiful son that we share together. We will continue to be great coparenting partners for him. We ask for respect and privacy for our family during this difficult time.”

Meet Morrison Rafael! Actress Camille Guaty Welcomes Son After Infertility Struggles

Camille Guaty is officially a mom!

The Prison Break actress, 43, and husband Sy Rhys Kaye welcomed their first child, a son named Morrison Rafael Kaye, on Saturday, Oct. 5, her rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Baby Morrison was born at 3:41 p.m., weighing 6 lbs., 2 oz., and measuring 20 inches long.

While Rafael is in honor of the new mom’s father, Morrison is a play off the name Morris, Guaty’s husband’s grandfather, who was a big influence in his life.

The couple also loved the name Sonny, a second inspiration for their son’s first name.

Camille Guaty and son Morrison

Welcome to the World! All of the Celebrity Babies Who’ve Made Their Debuts in 2019

In August, the actress exclusively announced with PEOPLE that she and Kaye were expecting their first child with the help of an egg donor. “The day the nurse called to tell me I was pregnant, I burst out crying!” she said at the time. “I made her say it to me four or five times. I feel so grateful now and can’t wait to meet our son.”

Guaty’s emotional journey to motherhood began nearly six years prior when she and her songwriter-producer husband began trying for a baby naturally. A year later, she and Kaye visited their first in vitro fertilization clinic, where the actress was told her ovarian reserve was “equivalent to that of a 50-year-old.”

“You never think this is going to be your story,” she said. “Women come up to me and say, ‘If you’re 43 and pregnant, I have plenty of time!’ I just want to say, ‘It didn’t happen the way you think it did.’ “

The couple went through five failed rounds of IVF and also tried intrauterine insemination — which involves placing the sperm directly into the uterus — but were still unable to get pregnant.

Camille Guaty

Two years ago, Guaty visited another doctor in New York who felt confident about her chances of conceiving, and put her on a three-month regimen to start her sixth round of IVF.

“I thought he was the end-all, be-all,” said Guaty. “But then I took such a nosedive in my fertility in those three months that he was like, ‘I don’t know what happened!’ My fertility was pretty much nonexistent.”

Last year, Guaty and Kaye began discussions of using an egg donor. “I honestly had a difficult time wrapping my mind around this choice,” she admitted. “Just a couple of years ago, the idea of another woman’s egg in my body was unfathomable.”

But the star stayed open-minded, and after months of looking, the couple found a donor through an “amazing IVF clinic in Mexico.”

“Sy flew to Mexico to give his sperm deposit, and I FaceTimed him from my trailer while the wardrobe team was putting on my prosthetic belly,” she recalled. “I saw this look on my doctor’s face. He told me our donor had messed up her final shot and ovulated all 17 eggs, so they weren’t retrievable.”

Despite being “tapped out” both emotionally and financially, Kaye wanted to try again with a new egg donor. But Guaty, who had begun working with foster children during this time, wanted him to consider foster-to-adoption as an option as well.

“After we found a second egg donor, we were told she could only give us two eggs — and then only one embryo matured. That’s when I told my husband, ‘I can’t do this. It’s too much pressure,’ ” she said.

Just as the couple began seeing eye-to-eye and seriously considering adoption, Guaty received the call that she was pregnant. “When we both let go of our expectations of what parenthood was supposed to be, our pregnancy happened with that one golden egg,” she said about their mutual breakthrough.

“I had such faith that I was going to be a mother,” Guaty recalled. “I didn’t know how it was going to turn out, but I realized being a mother means nurturing a child in an environment that will help them grow and flourish. That’s a family.”

Inside Kate Upton and Justin Verlander's Winning Romance

Adam Glanzman/MLB Photos via Getty Images

When you’re lamenting not winning a second World Series in three years, you’ve officially entered into first world problems territory.

So while Kate Upton was bummed not to see husband Justin Verlander and his Houston Astros emerge victorious from their seven-game standoff with the Washington Nationals last month, she was able to reflect back on the season with a healthy dose of perspective.

“Cheers to a great season!” she wrote in a Nov. 1 post, days after the Nats nabbed the title. “Even though the last series didn’t go our way it was an incredible year and we still have lots to celebrate!”

Cheers to a great season! Even though the last series didn’t go our way it was an incredible year and we still have lots to celebrate! So proud of you and always cheering you on @justinverlander!

A post shared by Kate Upton (@kateupton) on

Including one key off-the-field triumph: surviving the first year of parenting.

Described by the model as her entire world and her “motivation to be strong,” little Genevieve Upton Verlander fit right into Upton’s life with her favorite all-star. A “really cute mixture of us both” (not that most people will ever have the chance to know, the protective mama tending to hide her face from her 6.2 million Instagram followers), the 1-year-old “is a really good baby,” Upton gushed to Extra when she was just two months-deep in the motherhood game.

While she was grateful the newborn had begun sleeping through the night, she was even more thrilled with the affect she had on her seven-year romance with the baseball pitcher. “It’s so special and it makes me fall in love with him even more,” she continued.

Vivi, she wrote in a Father’s Day tribute to the 36-year-old, is lucky to “have such an inspiring loving and amazing father,” but she was fortunate too. “Watching you become a father has been one of the greatest joys in life.”

David Manning-USA TODAY Sports/ Sipa USA

So he was awash with confidence when he decided to shoot his shot on the set of the MLB 2K12 commercial they were filming, telling his friends he was going to get her number. Only snag, “I had my microphone on and didn’t realize,” he shared with Us Weekly last year. He was slightly mortified that she heard, but as he told the mag, “It worked.”

It was on their first date—an Aerosmith concert followed by a stop at a Detroit bar—that they realized what it’d be like as two known entities exploring a relationship when a woman not-so-surreptitiously snapped their photo with her phone. Her amateur pictures were picked up online with sources at the bar confirming they had been canoodling, a word rarely used when not describing how two famous people might act on a date.

Just like that, they were a couple.

Except that the twosome weren’t really eager to define their status and wouldn’t for another year or so when a yacht outing with pals off the coast of Southern California made them decide to dive in. “It felt like the first time we really got to know the other person,” Upton told Bleacher Report last year. “It felt…like finding a friend. A real friend.”

Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP

“I don’t like to talk to people about being hurt. As athletes, you’re not supposed to. It’s an excuse,” he told Bleacher Report. “But she was someone I could talk to. I mean, basically a therapist. Somebody I could trust with…worries about my career. Worries about, Can I make it? Worries about what I’m going through to get back. And just the overall s–ttiness of it all.”

Because Upton knew from s–tty situations. And she certainly wasn’t about to be bothered by the worst types of fans, the ones who pointed at her and the happiness she gave Verlander as the reason for his decline. As someone in an industry with an equal brief window of success and even more of a trained focus on the body, she empathized with what he was dealing with. After all, she had been shrugging off trolls telling her she was fat since she posed in an impossibly tiny string bikini on the cover of the 2012 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue looking every bit the envy of women everywhere.

“She obviously had dealt with more than me in her life,” Verlander told the outlet. “I mean, being a woman? Being in that industry? Being that famous? That was a level I hadn’t dealt with.”

Her perspective, that knowing her own body and how she treated it helped her brush off such ignorance, helped him deal with the critiques. And though much of their time together had the standard trappings of any relationships—”We are foodies, so I think a typical date night would be going out to dinner and a movie,” he recently shared with Sports Illustrated—she was also there to listen as he went through the worst of it.

“She was instrumental in me not…like, jumping off a bridge,” he shared. “I was depressed and kind of just upset at the world and trying to hide my own s–t.” In the middle of all that, he was left exposed in the worst way when his phone was hacked and intimate photos they intended just for each other made their way around the Internet. An unspeakably horrifying experience, to be sure, but Upton took it in stride, calling it “an extremely difficult time that we were able to grow stronger from.”

Quite simply, the self-assured, endlessly supportive model was exactly what the athlete needed, both during that trying time and for the rest of forever. As Verlander put it, “Who knows if I’m even here if it wasn’t for her?”

So no doubt she’s enjoyed watching the fruits of all his labors—even when they make life ever so inconvenient. The pair revealed their engagement at the start of the 2016 season, Upton accessorizing her sequin Topshop  Met Gala look with her new Anita Ko ring.

Reflecting back on Verlander’s “great, elaborate” preseason proposal during a Turks and Caicos sunset, she told Jimmy Fallon, “He gets down on one knee and he pops open the ring box, and in my mind, I was like, ‘Don’t look at the ring. He’s gonna think you’re materialistic. Just look in his eyes. Listen to what he’s saying. Listen. You’re not listening, Kate!’ This is my internal dialogue. And then, finally, I was like, ‘He stopped talking. Just say yes!’ And I said yes and he stands up and he was like, ‘Do you not like the ring? You didn’t look at it once.'”

Which is cute, because there’s not a lot to hate about an eight-carat round diamond.

Soon she got down to planning the multi-day Italian wedding they wanted to “feel like a vacation with 100 of our closest friends and family and someone just happens to get married,” as Verlander put it.

In the closing months of the 2017 season, he was traded from the Tigers, a team whose playoff hopes had all but withered, to the Astros, who were eyeing a deep post-season run and believed an all-star pitcher with World Series experience just might be the piece they needed. With the couple’s November 4 Tuscan vows already planned, they looked anxiously at the schedule ahead. Of course they hoped Verlander would still be playing come championship time, but it’d be ideal if he and his teammates could wrap things up and grab their rings before it was time for him to hop a flight to Europe and get another one.

“Literally when we’re planning this thing, we’re talking like, you know, best case scenario, we go to the World Series, there’s really literally only one thing that could throw a huge wrench in all of our plans,” Verlander shared during their joint appearance on The Tonight Show that November. “It’s not the World Series. It’s going to Game 7 of the World Series.”

MLB Photos Via Getty Images

Named the starting pitcher for Game 6 that Halloween, he did his best to throw a perfect game. (“He kept talking about it,” Upton recalled. “I was like…there’s a whole team out there!”) But despite his efforts and eight strike outs, the Dodgers won, forcing a deciding game the following night.

As it worked out, Verlander and his bride celebrated a World Series win with his team as their guests were exploring the bucolic scenery at Tuscany’s Rosewood Castiglion Del Bosco resort (“We had an event that night and everyone’s texting us, like, ‘Your wedding’s so pretty. Wish you were here,'” Upton joked of mingling with their guests via FaceTime), then hopped a private flight from L.A. to Rome where they rushed for a final fitting on Upton’s custom lace Valentino ballgown. Dress in hand, they rushed back to the airport to helicopter into the resort as their most treasured friends and family cheered their arrival.

“Makes it better that we weren’t there for the start of it,” Verlander said. “If we’d won Game 6, and everybody made it perfectly on time?…It’s just like, ‘Oh, everything’s f–king perfect.'”

Jackson Lee/Splash

Maybe not perfect, but pretty damn close. The two made it in time to take place in the Uplander Olympics, “an entire afternoon dedicated to interactive games,” Upton told Vogue of the ping-pong, cornhole, relay races and water balloon fight, then listened to a never-ending parade of toasts at their rehearsal dinner that night. The next day, Tuscany Flowers, under the direction of planner Lisa Vorce, transformed a hidden spot into a secret garden of sorts for the two to exchange their vows. “It was pretty storybook. The moment the gates opened and I saw her walking down the aisle, I lost it,” Verlander recalled to People

Then, under a greenhouse erected for the occasion and doused in flowers, candles and chandeliers, they watched a fireworks display and danced to the sounds of two bands Soul Brothers and The Kitts all night long.

Returning home, Verlander was still left marveling at the week of events that had transpired.

Photos

Kate Upton’s Pregnancy Style

“It’s such a crazy dream-come-true moment and two of those happened within a span of a couple days,” he told People. “Two life-changing events happened in the same week; it just doesn’t happen like that too often. As my brother-in-law loves to point out at the wedding, it was pretty much the pinnacle of my life, and now from there, it’s downhill! All in good jest, you know.”

Because seven months later came the news that was to be the cherry on the top of their life sundae: Upton was expecting.

In the year since, Upton has dealt with the standard mom hardships—hormones, constant, exhausting pumping, having to field fairly obnoxious questions about her plans to “get her body back,”—but life with her new pint-sized sidekick leave the balance in her favor. In Verlander she found the guy she could be herself with, the person with whom she enjoys an open communication and constant laughter. And in Vivi they’ve got a third little buddy to round out their trio. Between her tiny baby laughs and constant smiles, she shared with People in May, “She melts my heart. I’m so obsessed with her.”

Instagram / Kate Upton

So, yeah, as she shared on The Kelly Clarkson Show, “the hormones after pregnancy, for me, were crazier than when I was pregnant, and it took forever for them to calm down,” and it’s taken her a year of hard work with trainer Ben Bruno (co-creator of their Strong4Me program) to regain her ability to truly tear up a tough workout.

Still, things aren’t too shabby in the Upton-Verlander home. “Married life’s been great,” Verlander gushed to People last year. “I married my best friend, and we do everything we can to spend as much time together as possible. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier.”

Well, I mean, the second World Series would have been nice. But no need to get greedy. Not everything can be f–king perfect.

Meghan King Edmonds Compares Instagram vs Reality

The beauty of social media is that you can perfectly curate photos of a seemingly fabulous life — except, most of what you see is not at all close to what it’s really like. TORI ROLOFF’S SON WITH A SMELLY SURPRISE

Talk about being on mom duty (no pun intended)! The Little People, Big World star shared this snap of son Jackson for “all those mamas out there that sometime[s] feel like they are sinking.” She captioned the shot with a detailed recount of her day — which started with hosing husband Zach Roloff’s vomit off the porch after he woke up sick, and ended with finding their son (and his crib) covered in poop. And it didn’t stop there — since they had no hot water in their house that day, Tori had to drive him to another house to get him cleaned up. “If you were having a rough day I hope this helps. I can laugh now that Jackson is asleep in a throughly scrubbed crib,” she wrote.

It's a Boy! Pregnant Ashley Graham Reveals the Sex of Her Baby on the Way During Ellen Game

Ashley Graham is having a boy!

The 32-year-old supermodel revealed her baby on the way’s sex for the first time during her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, airing Thursday.

The soon-to-be first-time mother (who is expecting her first child with husband Justin Ervin in January) sat down with Ellen DeGeneres for a version of “Lightning Round” — a game that Graham plays on her podcast, Pretty Big Deal — when she dropped the big news.

While Graham is usually the one asking questions during the game, DeGeneres switched things up and put her guest in the hot seat. And while she didn’t address the model’s pregnancy in the first few rounds — starting with silly questions like, “Besides your husband, who do you have a crush on?” and “Most embarrassing wardrobe malfunction?” — in the final seconds, DeGeneres asked slyly, “Are you having a boy or a girl?”

“I’m having a boy!” Graham screamed, nearly jumping out of her seat. “I’m gonna be a mommy to a boy!”

Glam Mama-to-Be! Pregnant Ashley Graham Shows Off Her Baby Bump in Curve-Hugging Dress

The model announced her pregnancy back in August, wishing her husband a happy anniversary with an Instagram video revealing the news.

“Nine years ago today, I married the love of my life,” she began the post. “It has been the best journey with my favorite person in the world! Today, we are feeling so blessed, grateful and excited to celebrate with our GROWING FAMILY! Happy anniversary, @mrjustinervin ❤️ Life is about to get even better. 😘”

In the video announcement, Graham wore a form-fitting green tank dress that showed off her baby bump, while she and Ervin, 31, happily shouted, “Surprise!”

Since making the announcement, Graham has been candid about her pregnancy, sharing plenty of relatable moments on her socials including everything from stretch marks to food cravings.

She’s also not afraid to embrace her belly, and has been sharing how she’s keeping in shape during the pregnancy — including beating Olympic athlete Lindsey Vonn on an indoor SkiErg during a joint workout.

“That’s right, I beat Lindsey Vonn on the ski erg TWICE. But she still beat me at literally everything else,” she said with a laugh in a video of the workout. “You’re still the pro athlete, Lindsey!”
