Your lawn can be your pride and joy, and as the weather starts to improve, many of us are getting out into our gardens a bit more. But there’s nothing worse than to see weeds springing up in your perfectly manicured lawn. While they may seem harmless, some think they’re unsightly and the plants can actually be detrimental to your garden.
Weeds compete with other plants for sunlight as well as the moisture and nutrients from the soil, so they can be damaging to other plants’ health.
We might be tempted to give our lawns a generous spritz with some weed killer, but you don’t have to turn to harsh chemicals.
Instead, why not try out baking soda or white vinegar, which can be a natural and safe way to remove weeds from your grass.

Can you use vinegar and baking soda to kill weeds?
Yes, and in fact, this may be better for your garden rather than reaching for the weed killer.
Using such chemicals can cause stress to your garden, and even cause infestations in some cases.
Baking soda and vinegar also do not pose a risk to anyone’s health and are better for the environment, as well as being a handy household staple.
How to use vinegar to kill weeds
White distilled vinegar and apple cider vinegar are great products to use to kill weeds.
They’re best used in early spring, but can be used throughout the year.
To use, simply dilute one part vinegar with five parts water.
Transfer the solution to a spray bottle and get trigger happy, making sure to spritz the stem of the weed two to three times.

How often should you water outdoor plants?
If you’re using the spray on flowers, spritz the centre where the flower goes to seed to prevent them from multiplying.
Weeds sprayed with vinegar will die quickly, most within 24 hours, making vinegar a practical solution for those who want to see results immediately.
However, aim to use the spray on a day followed by two consecutive days of dry weather.
If it rains between applications, you may need to start again.
How to use baking soda to kill weeds
Baking soda is an effective way to remove weeds from your lawn or garden.
You can use bicarbonate of soda any time of the year, and all you need is one teaspoon’s worth per plant.
Moisten the plant, either with a hose or using a spray bottle of water.
Simply coat the weed, including its foliage, with soda, making sure the majority is covering the stem.
Reapply in four to six weeks if the weeds have not been completely eradicated.
