Outside space is now more important than ever for property hunters with a whopping 64 percent of UK residents claiming they won’t buy a property if it doesn’t have an outdoor area. New research from Rated People suggested that lockdown has meant that outdoor space is more important than ever for home buyers looking to entertain future guests. Some of the best ways homeowners can add value to their properties is by making changes outside that reflect this trend.
Summerhouses, outdoor entertainment areas, external lighting and pizza ovens are all great ways to make your home more appealing to buyers.
Garden home offices and garden gyms are also popular ways to add value to your home.
So what are the most valuable garden improvements homeowners can make?
Garden offices, garden gyms and outdoor entertaining areas add more value to a home than classic additions like lawns, paved patios and trees and plants.
Adding a home office garden room could add around £5,325 to the value of your home.
A gym or studio room could add £5,107 to the value of your home while an outdoor entertaining area could add £4,286.
Another great way to add value to your home is by adding a summer house which could give you an extra £5,249.
A summer house can act as another room or a children’s play room.

The addition that adds the most value is a swimming pool which could add as much as £7,707 to the value of your home.
A decked patio or paved patio adds around £4,227 and £4,083 respectively to the value of a property.
At the bottom of the list are built-in pizza ovens, built-in outdoor BBQs and external lighting.
Each of these add just over £3,000 to the value of a home.
Lockdown has led to a surge in garden interest with over a third of the UK saying they are more interested in gardening during the pandemic this year.
Almost half are also planning to transform their gardens in some way ready for the summer season.
Adrienne Minster, CEO at Rated People said outdoor space has become a “lifeline” over the past 12 months for many homeowners.
She said: “Our gardens and outside spaces have been a lifeline over the past year.
“For many of us, outside spaces have gone from being somewhere we might spend a bit of time when the weather is nice, to an important extension of our homes which have allowed us to see friends and family when it might not otherwise have been possible.
“It’s easy to see why homeowners and homebuyers now place more value on outdoor spaces.
“After a long, hard winter, we predict there’s going to be a surge in people wanting to make the most of their gardens this spring and summer – from creating areas perfect for entertaining friends and family, to building new patios, garden rooms and greenhouses to maximise a home’s value ahead of selling.
“We just need the weather to improve now so we can enjoy our time outside!”
