Weed killers found in garden centres and shops often contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment. So, instead of purchasing a weed killer, consider making one yourself at home.

There are many ways to make an effective weed killer using only simple household products.

You are likely to already have these products lying around the house, therefore they are cheaper than buying a weed killer from a shop.

Natural solutions are becoming increasingly popular as gardeners start to realise the importance of caring for the environment.

These natural solutions include using baking soda, lemon, vinegar, and more.

Luckily experts at Gardeners’ World have shared their top tips on how to create the best natural weed killers using only a handful of household products.

One of the easiest ways of removing weeds from the garden is using boiling water.

Simply pour boiling water on paths and paving to immediately kill the weeds.

But take care not to pour it on any nearby plants you want to keep.

Lemon juice can easily kill weeds as it contains citric acid which causes them to shrivel.

Juice around five lemons on the weeds, or as much as needed.

You can also use ready-squeezed juice from a bottle.

Salt is another cheap household product that can be used to kill weeds.

Salt can be very harmful to plants if applied in high enough doses as it dehydrates them.

To work as a weed killer, salt must be dissolved in water.

Mix salt and water together before pouring the solution on the weeds.

Baking soda and vinegar not only come in handy while cleaning the house, but they can also be used to kill weeds.

Create a weed killing solution by mixing one part baking soda with two parts vinegar.

You can also add in lemon juice if needed.

This mixture is best for young or annual weeds in paved areas, according to Gardeners’ World.

This option is effective but be warned: it doesn’t leave a pleasant smell.
