While the Paratas are getting back on their feet to some extent, with Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams), Nikau (Kawakawa Fox-Reo) and Gemma (Bree Peters) all working and having a place to stay, there is still friction between Nikau and his uncle. John (Shane Withington) reaches out to Gemma and they bond over their struggle to support their children.
Gemma is surprised by how much John is able to empathise with her situation, and they make a truce, vowing to move forwards with clean slates. While it’s clear John is softening towards Gemma, his opinion of Ari seems unchanged.
Meanwhile, Ari tries to get through to Nikau, who is struggling in the aftermath of Bella’s (Courtney Miller) hospital admission. However, his efforts only drive a deeper wedge between them – and surprisingly, it’s John who comes to their aid.
While Nikau is resistant at first, John appears to have a breakthrough, and Marilyn (Emily Symons) is surprised when she hears about his involvement. With John’s words echoing in his head, Nikau goes to tell Colby (Tim Franklin) about his true feelings for Bella.
When Ari realises how much influence his brother Tane (Ethan Browne) is beginning to have over Nikau, he drives over to his place and makes his stance clear – he doesn’t want Tane providing his nephew with any advice or contact.
However, it’s clear Tane won’t back down easily, and the threat is met with aggression. The two men face off in the street – are they about to get into a fight?
