Ben (Rohan Nichol) has been dealing with the aftermath of the decision to split from Maggie (Kestie Morassi), in a move that means big life changes for him after 20 years of marriage. When the Paratas begin to announce their hangi, Justin (James Stewart) brings up the fact it’s his first party as a single man.
Unsure about attending, Ben buries himself in his work at Salt, but then Gemma (Bree Peters) gets talking to him and suggests he drop by. Realising he would probably have a good time, Ben ends up attending and goes over to the new house.
Nikau (Kawakawa Fox-Reo) and Gemma are bonding when Ben shows up, and it’s clear the pair have an easy connection. Seeing the budding friendship and not wanting to share his mother, Nikau immediately takes a disliking to Ben.
Meanwhile at the hangi, Tane (Ethan Browne) makes a beeline for Mackenzie (Emily Weir) – openly ignoring the fact she’s in an on/off relationship with Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams). Getting her favourite drink, Mac begins to be charmed until Tane’s flirting becomes much too pointed.
Politely turning him down, Tane continues to try and win her over – but it isn’t long before Ari notices and steps in. The pair get into a heated confrontation, with Mac stuck in the middle…
