Martha Stewart has been in the spotlight for many decades, but fans may forget that she was previously in a decades-long relationship, as well.
In a sneak peek (above) of the Halloween episode of her HGTV show Martha Knows Best, which airs October 28, Stewart, 79, broaches the subject while on a video call with her friend Chelsea Handler.
After teaching the comedian, 45, how to make her favorite fall cocktail, bourbon apple cider, the pair start chatting about Handler’s recreation of Stewart’s now-famous pool selfie earlier this summer.
“We became very famous because of that, Chelsea,” Martha says, thanking Handler for the good-natured imitation. She then tells the Chelsea Handler Evolution star, “I got a lot of marriage proposals [as a result of the photo]” before asking, “did you get any?”
Chuckling, Handler responds that she didn't. “Do you get any that are actually worth considering?” she asks.
“I was too busy enjoying the instant fame from a stupid selfie, for God’s sake, to engage with any proposals!” Martha tells her friend. “That’s what’s wrong with me,” she jokes, “that’s why I’m still not married after a long marriage.”
The media maven was married to Andrew Stewart, a publisher, for 29 years before they called it quits in 1987, officially divorcing in 1990.
Martha’s ex-husband and father to her only child, daughter Alexis, 55, was a 23-year-old Yale law student when they met. The pair were set up on a blind date and married just a year later.
According to a PEOPLE cover story published a few years after the divorce, their marriage worked well in the beginning — with the pair splitting their days between their apartment in Manhattan and a home in Massachusetts' Berkshires — but became strained as Martha’s fame grew.
Friends were stunned when, in 1987, Andrew moved out and reportedly obtained a court order forbidding Martha to speak to him. He later became involved with her former assistant Robyn Fairclough, 21 years his junior, whom he married in 1993.
“The life that I had is over,” Martha said of the divorce in the 1995 interview. “And what has taken its place is better.”
In addition to Martha Knows Best, Martha will soon be returning to the Chopped judges’ table on Food Network, as well as headlining a forthcoming holiday-themed series. Her lifestyle magazine, Martha Stewart Living, is published by Meredith, PEOPLE's parent company.
The Halloween episode of Martha Knows Best airs Wednesday, October 28, at 8 pm ET/PT on HGTV.
