Nasturtiums or tropaeolum majus are easy to grow flowers coming a range of colours, from yellow to cream, orange to burgundy, brightening any garden. The flowers are often the first choice for children learning to plant seeds, and can even be used on top of salads or cakes.
Nasturtiums are edible flowers and can perk up any salad or adorn cakes if you’re wanting to give your baking that Great British Bake Off flare.
You can plant climbing or bush varieties of nasturtiums, so check which your seed is before sowing.
They are among the easiest and hardiest flowers to grow, making them ideal for any budding gardeners.

When to plant nasturtium seeds
Springtime is the perfect time to plant nasturtiums, between March and May – so get them planted soon!
They like well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight, so bear this in mind when picking your spot.
Once sown, flowers will bloom from the summer through to autumn.
The seeds can be sown straight into the ground, and here’s how.
You will need
- A packet of nasturtium seeds
- Gardening gloves
- Plant label

Make sure you rake the soil first, and then make holes around 20mm deep.
Space any rows 30cm apart, then sprinkle the seed over and cover with the raked soil.
If you notice any seedlings popping up too close together try and replant 30cm apart to prevent crowding.
Label your plants, and voila, you should have some beautiful flowers in a few months time.
Make sure you keep them regularly watered, particularly through any hot summer days.
Should you want to harvest the flowers for salads, you can do so at any stage.
Nasturtium petals and leaves can be eaten, with a hot and peppery taste perfect for salads.
The peppery flavour will increase throughout the flower’s life span so pluck early for milder tastes and later for spicier needs.
