Jeremy Corbyn risks climate change activist fury after easing target

<p>The latter had urged the Labour leadership to water down the pledge amid fears that the original one would have forced major job losses, particularly in the energy industry. </p>

<p>Labour is also proposing an immediate and permanent ban on fracking. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, it confirms previous pledges to upgrade almost all of the UK's 27 million homes to the highest energy-efficiency standards and to build thousands of new offshore and onshore wind turbines.   </p>

Kim Kardashian Photoshopped Chicago West Into Her Family's Flinstones Halloween Portrait

Good afternoon, all. Just when you thought the Halloweening was over now that it’s November 1, the ghosts of last night’s past has come back to haunt us. Why? Because your celebrity faves have only just begun posting alllll the costume pics from last night. You know, that’s if they’re not terribly hungover, LOL. Allow me to point to Exhibit A: Kim Kardashian, and her super cute family of 6!

On Instagram, Kim and her four children—North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm West—dressed up America’s first and favorite Pre-historic family. That’s right, you guessed it. The Flinstones! Kim dressed as Betty Rubble, while North and Saint dressed as Wilma and Fred Flinstone. The itty-bitty babies, Chicago and Psalm, dressed as Pebbles and Bam-Bam, of course. The whole thing was so freakin’ cute. Even Kanye joined in on the festivities by dressing up as Fred’s oversized dinosaur puppy, Dino!

Cute as it sounds though, Chicago was soooo not in the mood to pose for a Flinstones family portrait. According to Kim, Chi Chi wasn’t down to pose with the rest of her family because she didn’t realize Kanye was in the Dino costume…and got hella spooked out. So what did Kim do? Photoshop Chi into the picture—duh!

“This family pic was such a challenge because Chicago was so scared of Dino! LOL We tried to explain and show her that it was just daddy but she didn’t get the concept yet!” Kim wrote on Instagram. So shout out to the photographer for editing her in & making our family Flinstones dreams come true!” You literally cannot make this sh*t up:

As you can clearly see, Chicago looks extremely unhappy to be there. I really feel sorry for the girl! So she may have not had the guts to pose for the portrait this time, but maybe in the future, right? Better luck next Halloween, Chicago!

'Single' benefits cheat caught in bed with partner

‘Disabled’ woman, 50, who said she was a single mother and ‘too ill to work’ while claiming £260,000 of benefits was caught living with her partner and dancing at a wedding

  • Nasreen Akhtar claimed benefits as a single parent who was too ill to work
  • She said she had ‘poor mobility’ but was later caught dancing at a wedding
  • During a raid, police found her in bed with the partner she claimed had left her

Nasreen Akhtar said she was disabled to claim benefits

A woman who said she was disabled and a single parent in order to scam £260,000 of benefits was later caught in bed with her partner and seen dancing at a wedding.

Nasreen Akhtar, 50, fraudulently claimed £260,000 through a ‘complex raft of benefits’ between 2002 and 2013 based on being a single parent with poor mobility who was too ill to work, the Crown Prosecution Service said.

But following a tip-off, Department of Work and Pensions investigators began covert surveillance of the Oldham mother in 2012.

The CPS said that during a police raid on her home the following year, the partner Akhtar claimed she did not have was found in her bed.

Despite claiming she was ‘too ill to work’ and had ‘poor mobility’ and ‘significant care needs’, she was seen out and about with her family and dancing at a wedding, it added.

Akhtar admitted seven counts of fraud against the local authority and the DWP, and at Manchester Crown Court on Friday was jailed for two years.

Akhtar said she was ‘too ill to work’ and had ‘poor mobility’ but was seen dancing at a wedding (pictured)

Simon Tunnicliffe, of Mersey Cheshire CPS’s fraud unit, said it had taken three years for it and the DWP to bring Akhtar to justice.

He added: ‘This was an extremely complex benefits fraud case that went way beyond the average case.

‘It has taken the CPS and the DWP three years to bring this woman to justice as, shortly after the start of her trial in 2017, she attempted, at further cost to the taxpayer, to have herself found unfit to stand trial.

‘Earlier this year we brought even more compelling evidence that Ms Akhtar was trying to hoodwink the court and the judge decided that she was fit and well enough to stand trial.

‘On October 7 2019 at the pre-trial preparation hearing, in the face of a well-constructed case and overwhelming evidence, Ms Akhtar pleaded guilty to a total of seven counts of fraud against her local authority and the DWP.

Akhtar admitted seven counts of fraud against the local authority and the DWP and was jailed for two years

‘She has now been sentenced to two years in prison and Proceeds of Crime proceedings will begin to recover taxpayers’ money which is badly needed elsewhere.’

The CPS said that Akhtar had claimed housing benefit and council tax relief as a single parent for a house she rented, when she had actually owned it jointly with her partner.

She also claimed income support as a single parent reliant on benefit cash, when she owned other properties and had significant savings, it added.

Prosecutors said that Akhtar had claimed disability living allowance as a person with ‘extremely poor mobility and significant care needs’ and employment and support allowance as single parent who was ‘too ill to work’.

But she was seen out and about with her family and dancing at a wedding.

A DWP spokesman added: ‘Benefit fraud is a crime that diverts money from those who really need it. In addition to any sentence imposed by the court, people must pay back all the money they falsely obtained.

‘We have zero tolerance of anyone fraudulently claiming benefits and will take swift action to investigate, supporting our partners and prosecutors to bring them to justice.’

Russia has hidden the details of a handful of nuclear accidents since the 1950s — here's what we know about them

  • TheChernobyl nuclear power plant disaster was followed by three days of silence from the Soviet government. When officials did make a statement, they reported that the situation was “stabilized.”
  • Russia has tried to keep the details of othernuclear incidents hidden as well, including an explosion that killed seven peoplein August.
  • Here’s what we know about a handful of Russia’snuclear accidents.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more.

It’s no coincidence that many details of Chernobyl are stillshrouded in mystery.

Since the Soviet Union began developing nuclear technology in 1943, Russia’s government has tried to keep the details about that meltdown and a handful of nuclear accidents quiet. In some cases, details haven’t emerged until decades later.

Some disasters, like Chernobyl, have been related to nuclear power, while others involved military tests or atomic bombs. One nuclear event was only detected after scientists observed radiation in the air.

Here’s what we know about a handful of those incidents.

Chernobyl was the worst nuclear accident of all time, but Soviet officials reported afterward that the “radiation situation” was “stabilized.”

On April 26, 1986, the core of a reactor opened at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, sending plumes of radioactive material into the air. The toxic fumes contaminated the local vegetation and water supply near Pripyat, a Ukrainian city that was once part of the Soviet Union. But locals didn’t know that at the time.

After three days of silence, theofficial Soviet statement following the accident was that the “radiation situation” near the plant had been “stabilized.”

“Rumors are a little exaggerated. It is not a catastrophe. It is an accident,” the deputy minister for civil aviation, Mikhail Timofeev, told reporters.

Today, scientists estimate that tens of thousands of people were severely affected by Chernobyl, perhaps even hundreds of thousands. The International Atomic Energy Agencyhas estimated that 4,000 people will eventually die from cancer as a result of the disaster. But Russia’s official death count remains 31.

Details of a 1957 explosion at the Mayak nuclear facility didn’t emerge until decades later.

In 1957, a waste tank exploded at the Mayak nuclear facility in Russia, releasing around 2 million curies of radioactive waste into the air. The explosion exposed at least 22 villages to radiation, and is now considered the world’s third-worst nuclear accident, behind Fukushima and Chernobyl.

But details of the incident were sparse until 1992, when government records were declassified after the fall of the Soviet Union. As late as 1982, aUS technical report still referred to the disaster as “alleged.”

Around 270,000 people were said to be living on the contaminated land, but within two years of the accident, only 11,000 residents had been evacuated.

In 2009, residents of the nearby village of Muslyumovo were finally relocated about a mile away to an area dubbed “New Muslyumovo.” Much of the old territory was torn down. Homes were demolished, and the remains were thrown into pits, then buried.

Scientists recently discovered evidence of another major nuclear release that may have happened near the Mayak facility in 2017.

In July 2019, a group of scientists called the “Ring of Five” found evidence that an undisclosed nuclear accident may have taken place less than two years prior. The likely culprit, the scientists said, was the Mayak nuclear facility.

The discovery marked the first time that a radioactive isotope called ruthenium-106 had been found in the atmosphere since Chernobyl.

“We were stunned,” Georg Steinhauser, one of the study’s lead authors, told Business Insider. “We are measuring the air 24/7, 365 days a year, and suddenly we came up with something unusual and unexpected.”

The scientists don’t consider the levels of radiation they detected to be an immediate threat to people’s health, but Steinhauser said there could be reason to monitor food safety if radiation leaked into the soil and water. Russia hasn’t issued a response to the finding.

A secret nuclear test in 1954 went unreported until 1991, when a Soviet newspaper revealed the details.

In September 1954, the Soviet military detonated an atomic bomb in the air less than 2 miles away from 45,000 troops and thousands of civilians. US intelligence reports later compared the bomb to the one that the US dropped on Hiroshima.

Soviet newspaper Pravda uncovered the details 37 years later.

Archival military video of the explosion was included in a 1993 Finnish documentary called “Human Nuclear Guinea Pigs,”according to The New York Times. The film suggests that the military exercise was meant to test how troops would fight, if at all, immediately after a nuclear bomb had hit the area. The soldiers hunkered in makeshift shelters during the explosion and then staged a mock battle in its aftermath.

About 1 million people lived within 100 miles of the detonation at the time, but the numbers of deaths, injuries, and illnesses resulting from the incident are unknown. A group of veterans said they had experienced radiation illness for years following the incident, at least until the 1990s.

Villagers in a nearby town told the documentary filmmakers that many locals got on their roofs to watch the explosion; some went blind, and others later developed cancer.

The latest mysterious incident came in August. Russian officials said a fire broke out at a rocket testing site, but days later, the public learned that seven scientists had died in a nuclear explosion.

On August 8, 2019, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported thata liquid rocket engine exploded at one of the state’s testing sites. Two scientists had died, officials said.

Shortly after the explosion, authorities in the city of Severodvinsk reported a brief spike in the area’s radiation levels. Residents of a nearby town weretold to evacuate, but the orders were soon cancelled.

Two days later, Russia’s nuclear energy company, Rosatom, revealed that the explosion involved radioactive materials and seven people had died.

By the end of the month, aRussian official admitted that the accident was “linked to the development of weapons which we had to begin creating as one of the tit-for-tat measures in the wake of the United States’ withdrawal from the Anti-ballistic Missile Treaty.”

US officials believe the explosion could be the result of a failed test of a nuclear missile Russia is developing called “Skyfall.”

Christian Siriano Remembers Chris March After Designer's Death: 'You Will Truly Be Missed'

Christian Siriano is mourning the loss of his Project Runway peer Chris March, who died on Thursday at the age of 56.

“Chris you brought so much beauty into this world and will truly be missed,” the fashion designer, 33, wrote on social media alongside a black and white photo of the pair.

The pair competed in season 4 of Project Runway together, which Siriano won and March placed 4th on. March also appeared on Project Runways All Stars and had his own show, Mad Fashion, on Bravo, where he designed client Chrissy Teigen‘s 2011 Met Gala gown and made custom creations for Jennifer Coolidge, Dina Manzo, among others.

“It was an honor to share a very special experience with you,” he continued, adding that he hoped March was “resting someplace beautiful dressed in one of your unbelievable creations.”

Siriano went on to encourage others to think of March’s loved ones during this time.

“Chris you will truly be missed,” he captioned the image, urging others to “send your love to his family.”

March died on Thursday afternoon following an extensive health battle that included being placed in a medically induced coma and suffering paralysis in his both legs, as well as his arm and hand.

Fellow Bravo star Andy Cohen also shared his own tribute to March, posting a photo of the late star’s hilarious Lisa Vanderpump costume, which was taken during a special Halloween episode Watch What Happens Live.

“This is how I’m going to remember Chris March, dressed as Lisa Vanderpump as I wear a Giggy costume he made for one of our first Halloween specials,” Cohen, 51, wrote. “Chris was a finalist on Season 4 of Project Runway.”

“He designed for everyone from Beyoncé, Gaga, Madonna, Meryl, Prince and many legendary downtown drag queens (And Sonja Morgan!). He had a big booming laugh; he was a joy and delight. #RIP” he continued.

A spokesperson for Bravo told PEOPLE in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the news of Chris March’s passing. He was a favorite among Bravo fans and the fashion community. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. He will truly be missed.”

March’s death comes two years after the designer had a near-fatal accident in June 2017.

At the time, March fell in his apartment, hit his head and awoke four days later. When he got to the hospital, he was put in a medically induced coma, in which he remained for two months before waking up to find that he was paralyzed in both legs from the knees down, as well as his right hand and arm.

“I passed out and laid there for four days,” he told Entertainment Weekly in a statement from 2018. “I woke up and called 911 and somehow got to the hospital.”

“In the hospital, all sorts of medical problems happened: My blood sugar was over 500. My organs started failing, my right lung collapsed, and they had to give me a tracheotomy and put me on a ventilator,” he added.

Chris March

After his fall, he had several setbacks in his recovery. He started a GoFundMe page to help offset the enormous cost of medical bills and kept fans updated on the struggles he faced.

In a statement shared with PEOPLE at the time — and posted on his GoFundMe website in March — he said the biggest hardship he faced was his inflated medical insurance.

“I am also in need of leg braces, specialized physical therapy, a hearing aid, and a new living arrangement,” he wrote.

March was currently living in a space that was “unbearable” and made him “anxious and depressed every day” writing that in the nursing facility he had to “deal with homophobia, shortage of rehab personnel and lack of funds.”

Chris March

Despite his setbacks after the fall, March found the strength to fight in his signature style, sharing a photo of himself in a nurse uniform with a colorful wig.

“In the face of all my setbacks, I try to remain positive — the leg braces are an exciting new tool on my road to recovery,” he wrote. “I am trying to get my tracheotomy removed, and I try my best to effect positive change in this facility for myself and all the residents here.”

March added, “I try to add humor, glamour, and a little glitter to my world.”

The Second City Claims First in Architecture

On a sunny summer day in Chicago, visitors to the Chicago Architecture Center had only to cross busy Wacker Drive to board the tour boat that would take them past the architectural icons that line the Chicago River. On board, docents pointed out landmarks such as the white terra cotta Wrigley Building completed in 1924 and the corncob-shaped Marina City towers from 1967 designed by Bertrand Goldberg.

The Instagrammable itinerary, ranked as the city’s top attraction on TripAdvisor, has long been the most popular offering from the nonprofit formerly known as the Chicago Architecture Foundation. With last fall’s move eight blocks north to One Illinois Center, to a building designed by the modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the renamed Chicago Architecture Center gained a prominent riverfront location and a platform to tell the story of Chicago design and its global influence.

“We’re opposite the cruise dock, in the last building Mies designed on the site of Fort Dearborn where the city was founded,” said Lynn Osmond, the president and chief executive of the Chicago Architecture Center, emphasizing its centrality, both geographically and historically.

The design nonprofit already drew nearly 700,000 annual visitors before it opened the new location on the recently transformed riverfront. But with the move, the center has expanded its function from acting as a starting point for architectural tours to include 9,000 square feet of gallery space (from 1,600 square feet prior), which the institution is using to make its case for Chicago as a city of design in exhibits ranging from resource conservation to global skyscraper design.

Beside the center’s front door sits a nearly 40-foot-tall scale model of the as-yet-unbuilt Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, designed by the Chicago-based architect Adrian Smith and intended to be the world’s first one-kilometer-tall building. It tapers as it rises through a cutout in the floor of the second story skyscraper gallery to graze the 26-foot-tall ceiling. The airy, window-walled skyscraper gallery, where architecture students recently mingled with visitors from Ohio and England, exhibits models of iconic tall buildings worldwide including the elegant Chrysler Building in New York City and the London tower by Norman Foster nicknamed the “Gherkin.”

“Chicago invented skyscrapers and we’re still building the tallest buildings in the world, though they just may not be here,” Ms. Osmond said, referring to the now-demolished Home Insurance Building, built in 1885 and considered to be the first modern skyscraper, and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the tallest building in the world, completed in 2010, also by Mr. Smith, then with the Chicago firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

Visits begin on the ground floor where more than 4,000 buildings fill out a 3-D scale model of Chicago, the centerpiece of a multimedia show illustrating th development of the city. During the presentation, dramatic lighting paints a core of the pale gray buildings orange to illustrate the Great Fire of 1871 that razed more than 17,000 structures. The Fire is largely credited with attracting architects who rebuilt Chicago with new 20th-century aesthetics.

While skyline stars like 875 N. Michigan Ave., formerly known as the John Hancock Center, and the Willis Tower are highlighted in the show, and well-known architects of the past including Daniel Burnham and Louis Sullivan get a lot of attention in displays, other exhibits focus on neighborhood design and vernacular architecture in styles like the bungalow and the two-flat and illustrate how the city developed around industry, urban planning and natural resources like Lake Michigan.

In learning about the forces that created Chicago’s urban plan, Ms. Osmond hopes visitors will “go back and look at your own city in new ways.”

From a practical standpoint, the new headquarters centralizes the indoor and outdoor attractions offered by the Chicago Architecture Center. In addition to the museum exhibits, the center is now the hub for its many tours — 75 on foot and 20 by bus, bike or elevated “L” train — including the boat tours that launch just across the street. Walking tours range from “Must-See Chicago,” including the Wrigley Building, to modern skyscrapers, and most run about 90 minutes.

During the pedestrian tour “Chicago Architecture: A Walk Through Time” ($26), the docent Eileen Jacobs moved quickly from the city’s origins as a 17th-century fur trading post to the Great Fire that left 100,000 homeless. She credited the advent of lightweight steel-frame construction as a solution to the “horrible chocolate-pudding soil here.”

While never straying more than five blocks from the center, the tour stopped at a 1928 bank by the architectural firm Rapp and Rapp featuring a squirrel on the facade as a reference to squirreling away money; the Art Deco-era Chicago Motor Club by Holabird and Root with period lobby murals within what is now a Hampton Inn; and the 1929 Carbide and Carbon Building, resembling a champagne bottle in the fizzy days before the Great Depression.

The 90-minute trip ended looking at the Vista Tower. Not yet finished but already revealing its undulating shape, the design by the Chicago architect Jeanne Gang represents a contemporary chapter in Chicago’s newly central design story.

Automakers to equip nearly all U.S. vehicles with systems to avoid deaths of children in hot cars

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Major automakers said on Wednesday they have agreed to equip nearly all U.S. vehicles with systems to remind motorists of passengers in the back seat, by model year 2025, in an effort to avoid deaths of young children left behind in hot cars.

The announcement on so-called rear seat reminder systems comes as the U.S. Congress has been debating the issue. In July, the Senate Commerce Committee passed by voice vote legislation to eventually require automakers to install technology on new vehicles alerting exiting parents to check for children in the back seat.

The automakers from two trade groups representing nearly all automakers said the companies are committing to include audible and visual alerts on vehicles by the 2025 model year but could get an additional 12 months for vehicles about to be redesigned and could exempt emergency motor vehicles.

The 20 automakers taking part represent nearly 98% of all U.S. vehicle sales.

The automakers include General Motors Co (GM.N), Ford Motor Co (F.N), Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE), Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), Hyundai Motor Co (005380.KS) and Honda Motor Co (7267.T).

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (FCHA.MI) said it will eventually adopt the reminder technology on all vehicles worldwide but said timing by region will vary.

GM has had a system on some U.S. vehicles since 2016 that provides audible alert and a visual reminder on the vehicle dashboard to check for a child before exiting.

Lawmakers say more than 800 children in parked vehicles have died from heatstroke in the United States over the last two decades.

The systems generally operate to alert a driver to the presence of a child if a rear door was opened at the start of a trip. Some safety advocates want a more advanced system that would detect the actual presence of a child in the back seat.

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, a Republican who chairs the Commerce Committee, said in an interview the voluntary agreement makes the legislation unnecessary. Under the legislation being considered, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would be compelled to write regulations and then automakers would have at least two years’ lead time.

“This gives us essentially everything we’ve asked for and it does it sooner,” said Wicker, who added the Transportation Department plans to use some discretionary funds for a public information campaign. “It is a huge win.”

NHTSA typically takes years to write regulations. For example, a proposal to require automakers to send email notifications of recalls has been pending for more than three years.

Wicker’s bill would also direct states to use a portion of highway safety program funds to educate the public on the risks of leaving a child or unattended passenger in a vehicle, and require the Transportation Department to conduct a third-party study on retrofitting existing passenger motor vehicles.

U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat who cosponsored the legislation, noted earlier this year that many newer vehicles alert drivers if they leave their keys behind. “You should get a warning if you leave a child in the car,” she added.

Lachlan Coote cannot escape fans' chant to Oasis tune – his son sings it at home!

LACHLAN Coote has an Electric dream to wow at Wembley – after being plagued by a song about him even at home.

The St Helens star is the subject of a fans’ chant about his brilliance to the tune of Oasis’ She’s Electric.

And the Scotland international, who qualifies through his grandmother, revealed that even when he is at home there is no escape – as four-year-old son Bailey joins in and belts it out.

“My little fella’s singing it non-stop,” said the 29-year-old full-back, who will shake off a knee injury that was found to be more severe than first thought after what he calls ‘crappy news.’

“I can’t get away from it, it’s crazy. He sings it as soon as he wakes up first thing in the morning and he’s singing it always after matches.

“You don’t get anything like that in Australia. I didn’t know the tune She’s Electric beforehand. I had to ask what song it was at first. Now I do and I like it.”

Meanwhile, SunSport understands Tonga boss Kristian Wolff has not yet been given the job of replacing coach Justin Holbrook, who is heading to NRL side Gold Coast Titans.

St Helens sources insist no decision has yet been made but it will shortly after they face Warrington at Wembley on Saturday.

KFC Just Launched MAC & CHEESE BOWLS, This Is Not A Drill

If you’ve ever stopped at KFC and bemoaned the fact that the restaurant’s mac and cheese is a mere side dish, rather than the basis for a full meal, you may now cease your wailing: KFC is launching Mac And Cheese Bowls in just a few days’ time. The marriage of KFC’s classic mac and cheese side dish and the concept of the KFC Famous Bowl, these new entrees bring together the creamy cheesiness of a good bowl of mac and the delightful crispiness of KFC’s Popcorn Chicken. They’ll be arriving on the menu at participating locations on Aug. 26, so, uh… look out, world. Here I come.

KFC’s mac and cheese has long been a favorite side dish at the fried chicken chain. The Original Famous Bowl, meanwhile, was introduced in 2006. Combining two of KFC’s classic sides — mashed potatoes with gravy and sweet corn — with bite-sized bits of crispy chicken not too dissimilar from the Popcorn Chicken the chain originally added to the menu in 1993 and topped off with shredded cheese, the bowl quickly became fan favorites among those who like to mix their foods as they eat them. (Those in the “each food must be eaten separately and also must never touch on the plate, ever” camp, however, were understandably somewhat less enamored with the idea.) At the tail end of 2018, another variety of Famous Bowl hit the menu — the Spicy Famous Bowl — adding a drizzle of Nashville Hot sauce to the mix.

Now, though, both dishes have come together into one glorious mélange — with the notable bonus of mac and cheese finally arriving on the KFC menu as an entrée. The new bowls are available in two varieties — the regular Mac And Cheese Bowl and a hotter variation, the Spicy Mac And Cheese Bowl — both of which start by swapping out the mashed potatoes and gravy found in the original Famous Bowls for a heaping portion of KFC’s mac and cheese. The bowls are then piled high with crispy bites of chicken and a sprinkling of more cheese (because when it comes to cheese, more is always better) — and if you opt for the Spicy Mac And Cheese Bowl, you also get a slug of Nashville Hot sauce on top.

As Andrea Zahumensky, the Chief Marketing Officer for KFC U.S., put it in a press release, “Mac and Cheese has a cult-like following, and bowl food is a trend that isn’t going away anytime soon. So, it made perfect sense to call up a favorite side dish to the big leagues, in a way that only we could, with Mac And Cheese Bowls.” And how!

It’s worth noting, by the way, that their U.S. debut is actually not the Mac And Cheese Bowls’ first outing; back in 2018, they made appearances in a number of Asian markets, including Singapore. It does seem as if they’ve tweaked the recipe a bit since then — rather than being topped with shredded cheese, the bowls in Singapore were topped with nacho cheese sauce — but the current bowls are essentially the same thing: Servings of mac and cheese topped with Popcorn Chicken. Clearly, they did well enough in other markets to warrant a wider release.

Mac And Cheese Bowls are perhaps not the most extra thing KFC has ever come up with; indeed, for a chain that tends to specialize in unusual takes on otherwise familiar foodstuffs (Mac And Cheese Zinger, I’m looking at you), these options are downright tame. They do, however, look like they might have some staying power, so give ‘em a shot if the idea of chicken and mac and cheese together floats your boat. For a limited time, they’re available as part of the $5 Fill Up menu, adding a medium drink and chocolate chip cookie to the order. Find your nearest KFC here.

Happy lunching!

What is Houseparty? All the chat apps you need to know about.

Simple SMS messaging is so passé. Nowadays, there are hundreds of chat apps ready to connect friends in new and inventive ways.

But the app that is capturing a lot of attention recently is Houseparty, the party video chatting app that’s been bought by Epic Games, the company behind global gaming juggernaut Fortnite.

It allows users to make a "room" and then invite their friends, who in turn can invite their friends, until eight people are all video chatting away happily (or sadly, depending on what kind of party they’re after).

Let’s get the party started: Up to eight friends can join the chat in the Houseparty app.

When you’re creating a room, the app suggests all kinds of goofy conversation starters, most of which sound false but might be true (does Wyoming only have two escalators?). Your friends get a notification so they can join, but there is also the option to only notify some of your friends, or make a private party where you handpick who's allowed to join.

You can open up your room to people who are nearby, or choose not to have location services turned on. People in the house party can play games together, like Ellen DeGeneres’ app game Heads Up, as well as Trivia and other party games to fill any lull in the conversation.

Although some parents are concerned about the potential for cyber bullying, especially since some rooms allow friends to invite their friends and so on, it’s basically one of those old school Telstra three-way phone calls on steroids.

While that does have the potential for abuse (such as in the Mean Girls case), so does any technology that allows people to communicate. Human interaction can sometimes be fraught with unpleasantness, but the good experiences usually outweigh the bad.

Houseparty has been praised as one of the best ways to keep in touch with friends or family who are all over the world because the app is easy to use, and doesn’t have public profiles.

Although roughly two thirds of the app’s userbase is under the age of 25, it’s user-friendly enough that grandparents will be comfortable joining in.

Of course, Houseparty isn’t the only chat app outside the traditional messaging services WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger people use to stay in touch, while avoiding SMS or calling limits built into their phone plans.

Chat apps are becoming particularly popular in the US where mobile phone plans often have restrictive call and texting limits and unlimited mobile data – the polar opposite of mobile phone plans here in Australia.

However, the apps' popularity overseas means that they spread easily to Australia, popularised by social media influencers, popular entertainment stars and frequent travellers.

Here are some of the top chat apps worth checking out:

Snapchat is still king, particularly with high schoolers. Snapchat allows users to send each other pictures and messages that can expire after a set period of time.

Discord is primarily used by gamers and is more like the traditional chat rooms of old, though with extra community-building features.

Squad is similar to Houseparty, but also allows screensharing, which is great for getting tips on Tinder dates and video games.

Telegram is one of the most popular messaging apps in the world because of its reputation for security. Its voice over IP (VOIP) calls and "secret chats" have end-to-end encryption that means no one other than you and the person you’re messaging can read them.

However, it doesn’t feature that encryption on regular messaging chats, which are only encrypted between you and the Russian server. Still, the self-destruct feature on the messages in “secret chats” can be helpful for those who don’t want to take any chances.

Wickr became well known in Australia after it was revealed that it was used by Malcolm Turnbull, Scott Morrison and other Liberal Party plotters during the 2015 leadership crisis. It’s another app that’s famous for its serious encryption and self-destructing messages, favoured by adulterers, sexters and anyone who doesn’t want someone else reading their conversations.

GroupMe, as the name implies, is for group chats and organising gatherings with friends. It also allows for group calls and seeing approximately where your friends are on a map.

WeChat is one of the largest social media apps in the world, with multi-purpose messaging and mobile payment options. It’s a massive deal in China, which is the origin of most of its one billion monthly active users.

LINE is another hugely popular Asian messaging and social media apps with voice and video calls, messaging and its famous stickers.

Kik is set up for one-on-one or group messaging, allowing users to share photos, videos, gifs and games, as well as find and chat with strangers with similar interests. Because it’s not tied to a real name or phone number, it allows users to be anonymous, which can be great, except it also has a reputation for being ‘the defacto app for child predators’, according to Forbes.

BAND is centred all around group messaging, and helps users organise events. It’s particularly favoured by sports teams, gaming groups, families and bands because of the built-in calendar and ability to set up polls.

Christy Carlson Romano Is 'Shook' After Having to Take Daughter, 5 Months, to the Hospital

It’s been a harrowing week for Christy Carlson Romano.

On Monday, the Even Stevens alum and mother of two, 35, shared a photo of herself nursing her 5-month-old daughter Sophia Elizabeth to her Instagram account, where she recounted a recent health scare that sent her infant to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County unexpectedly.

“The end of last week was rough!” Romano began her caption. “I was changing Sophia and noticed she had swelling on the side of her neck. I took her to the doctor and they sent me immediately to @chocchildrens When we got there we had to stay overnight to give her antibiotic in an IV!”

“I was shook. I cried a lot. But strangely my baby and I feel even more bonded,” she continued. “I struggled with my milk supply the first go so I’ve been really happy with being able to nurse her on demand. Some days it’s super hard to balance. Ok — most days it’s super hard to balance.”

Christine Lakin 'Instantly Bonded' with TV Baby's Real-Life Mom in Candid Breastfeeding Moment

Anyone with kids knows one big word is important to keep at the forefront of your vocabulary at all times: improvisation.

Actress Christine Lakin — herself a mother of two in real life — recently leveraged her flexibility on set when her “TV baby,” a now-16-month-old little boy named Angus, needed to breastfeed during a shoot.

Thankfully, Gus’ mom, Breanne Loveland, was nearby and stepped in to alleviate the situation. And it ended up turning into an unforgettable moment, caught on camera.

“Sometimes you’re on a shoot and your TV baby needs to nurse but you’re still trying to get the shot and hoping he falls asleep in your arms so you can start rolling so you just kind of go with it. Then his little hand reaches in your blouse too. 😂,” the former Step by Step star, 40, captioned her Instagram photo that showed Gus nursing from his mom while his hand was reached inside the actress’s top.

“It was probably one of the more unique work situations I’ve been in but we got the take! 🎥 Thanks @breanneloveland for letting me hold your sweet baby all day. You and I were instantly bonded in this moment. #setlife #workingmoms,” Lakin concluded the caption.

What Does Every Mom Need to Know About Breastfeeding?

Lakin and husband Brandon Breault are parents to two young children: son Baylor B., 10 months, and daughter Georgia James, 3.

The Hollywood Darlings star has given a glimpse into her life as a mom over the years, including both fun moments and candid ones about how difficult parenting can be sometimes.

” ‘Vacations’ with kids aren’t really vacations,” she wrote alongside a family beach photo last month. “As my friend says, they’re ‘trips.’ The kind you sort of need a proper vacation from. 😂”

“But we did it and it was mostly great and a lot of people came and held our kids and colored with georgia and played Elsa and Anna so I could have a break ☺️,” Lakin added.

Lakin and Breault revealed they were expecting their second child in April 2018 on PopTV.com, sharing a photo reminiscent of their first pregnancy announcement — in front of a theater marquee that read, “COMING SOON / THE SEQUEL ‘BABY BOY’ / SEPTEMBER 2018.” (This time, the photo including their daughter!)

In late August 2018 — two and a half weeks after celebrating her son with a baby shower thrown by her “beautiful tribe” and just over a month before his arrival on Sept. 10 — the star shared some “honest thoughts” about her mixed feelings over becoming a family of four.

“I can’t wait to watch Georgia grow as a big sister, and I also want to cry thinking of my time being divided,” Lakin captioned a family photo from a shoot by Inda Reid. “Also, we’ve got a good thing going here — she’s more independent by the day and we’ve figured out our family routine.”

“At the same time, here’s a chance to do it all over again — without the fear and anxiety that first baby brings of, ‘Am I doing any of this correctly?’ ” she shared. “We get to complete our family in such an awesome way and it’s a blessing. Have I mentioned I may be a tad hormonal? It’s normal to cry during Bachelor in Paradise right? 😂”

These Chips Are Made Out of Chicken. Does That Mean They’re Healthy?

Making a decision in the supermarket these days is an exercise in patience.

There are an ever-increasing number of packaged products—all marketed to people who don’t have a lot of time to be closely doing the math on nutrition facts panels. (So if there are 280 calories per serving, and the bag says there are about 4 1/2 servings per bag, then…)

So you grab something that looks somewhat good and also good-for-you. But then later you take a closer look and wonder: “Is this even healthy?”

Getty Images

If that’s you, then you’re in luck.

Welcome to “Is This Even Healthy?”, where we take a packaged snack product and ask a registered dietitian that very question.

Then we sample the product and share the experience with you.

First up, chips made out of chicken.

Yes, chicken.

The Product: Wilde Brand Thin & Crispy Chicken Chips, Barbecue

The Nutrition: Per 15 chip serving (2 servings per bag) 170 calories, 7g protein, 10g carbs (0g fiber, 1g sugar), 10g fat

The Ingredients: chicken chips (natural chicken, tapioca flour, coconut oil, black pepper, garlic (powder), seasoning blend [coconut palm sugar, tomato powder, sea salt, onion powder, smoked paprika, garlic powder, natural smoke flavor, citric acid, spices]

Paul Kita

Is This Even Healthy?

“I definitely wouldn’t consider these chips a high-quality protein source,” says Abby Langer, R.D., a dietitian based in Toronto. “Meaning, don’t eat them as a source of protein at meals.”

“There’s nothing horrid about them, despite the concept of making chips out of meat and starch.”

“The calories seem comparable to potato chips, and the protein is higher. Overall I’d consider this product a good snack for when you’re craving chips.”

“Nothing earth shattering here though—they’re just another ultra-processed option that’s riding the protein/no grain wave.”

And the cassava root? “It’s just a grain-free starch. No fiber. It’s the equivalent of white flour.”

Is This Even Good?

Taste: At first bite, there’s a pleasant, straight-out-of-the-gate, sweet-salty BBQ pop. I detect neither light or dark meat. Nor coconut. Nor tapioca, for that matter. The nearest BBQ flavor comparison is Pringles, which is not a bad thing.

Texture: Crispy, but also crumbly. A good potato chip crunches, and then melts. Chicken chips crunch, and then splinter, and then turn pebbled in nature, until finally you swallow a sort of rough-textured paste, which is a bad thing.

Aftertaste: Ah there’s the tapioca flour, which admittedly I’ve never had, but can only guess because it has that starchy, heavy feeling left by similarly dense fruits and vegetables.

Final Verdict

Slightly healthier than potato chips as a snack; slightly less tasty than potato chips as a snack.

The Killers at Glastonbury – stage, set time, setlist and everything else you need to know

AMERICAN indie rock band The Killers are heading back to Glastonbury for an epic performance on June 29.

Since they released their debut album Hot Fuss in 2004, their single Mr Brightside has dominated the UK Singles Chart for over 14 YEARS – here's why…

Who are The Killers?

Formed in Las Vegas, The Killers are a four-piece, American rock band led by lead singer Brandon Flowers.

They have been on the music scene since 2004.

Having sold an estimated 22 million records worldwide, The Killers have proven to be one of the most successful rock bands of the 21st Century.

Following the release of their album Wonderful Wonderful, the band are returning to the UK for their latest tour in July 2018.

The Killers were also nominated for Best International Group at the Brit Awards 2018. They won the award in 2017.

When are The Killers performing at Glastonbury, when does it start and what's the setlist?

An official setlist for The Killers’ upcoming two-hour performance at Glastonbury has remained a secret, but frontman Brandon Flowers did confirm that there won’t be any new music to look forward to.

The band reportedly didn’t have enough time to finish working on fresh material given that they had been on tour and are scheduled to fly to America following their set while gracing the pyramid stage.

According to BristolPost, The Killers’ setlist could very well end up looking like this:

The Man

Spaceman

The Man

Human

Smile Like You Mean It

The Way It Was

Somebody Told Me

All These Things That I’ve Done

Read My Mind

Jenny Was a Friend of Mine

A Dustland Fairytale

When You Were Young

The Way It Was

Mr Brightside

Their performance is expected to commence on June 29 at 9:45pm, with concertgoers able to sing along to songs they all know and love.

What albums have The Killers released?

As well as the hugely successful debut album Hot Fuss, The Killers have released a total of 5 chart-topping albums.

Sam's Town was released in 2006, and features the single When You Were Young.

Day & Age has more synth-focused records including Human.

Battle Born came out in 2012 with Wonderful Wonderful in 2017.

Why Mr Brightside is still in the UK charts?

Mr Brightside reached No10 in the UK Top 40 Charts.

While it is internationally acclaimed and, arguably, one of the most catchy songs going, it has never been at number 1 in the UK or US.

In March 2018 it achieved its 200th week in the Top 100.

According to British Phonographic Industry, Mr Brightside is the most streamed song of any track released before 2010.

From March 2017-2018 it was the most streamed song of any with a release date before 2010.

The success of the track appears to be down to the fact that it is viewed as an anthem and is popular among ageing millenials.

It was also voted ninth in the Greatest Guitar Riffs of the 21st Century so far by Total Guitar magazine in 2010.

It's popularity has also been attributed to the band's tours and it frequently being played at parties.

What other songs have The Killers released?

Somebody Told Me reached number 3 in the UK charts.

Smile Like You Mean It made number 11 with When You Were Young hitting No2.

They also had top 10 hits with Human in 2008.

All These Things That I've Done, Read My Mind, Tranquilize and Runaways all made the top 20.

And the band's single Bones – that was featured on their second album, Sam's Town – also had a music video directed by Tim Burton.

As a result, the music video won Best Video at the NME Awards in 2007.

Vatican says you can't choose your gender as it rejects trans movement

The Catholic Church has issued an official document rejecting the idea that you can decide if you are a man or a woman.

The Vatican paper insists that the sexual ‘complementarity’ of men and women is to make babies.

Published during LGBT month, the document was quickly rounded upon by LGBT Catholics who said it contributed to bigotry and violence against gay and transgender people.

Advocacy group New Ways Ministry said it would further confuse individuals questioning their gender identity or sexual orientation and at risk of self-harm.

The text, ‘Male and Female He Created Them,’ was intended to help Catholic teachers, parents, students and clergy address what the Vatican’s Congregation for Catholic Education called an ‘educational crisis’ in the field of sex education.

It called for a ‘path of dialogue’ and listening on the issue of ‘gender theory’ in education. But even priestly advocates for LGBT Catholics noted that the text appeared to have relied entirely on previous papal pronouncements, Vatican documents and philosophers and theologians.

Jesuit priest and author James Martin said: ‘The real-life experiences of LGBT people seem entirely absent from this document.

‘We should welcome the congregation’s call to dialogue and listening on gender, and I hope that conversation will now begin.’

Jay Brown of the Human Rights Campaign – the largest LGBT-rights group in the United States – said the Vatican’s stance ‘sends a dangerous message that anybody who experiences gender diversity is somehow less worthy.’

Pope Francis has repeatedly argued the position that people cannot choose their genders. But the document represents the first attempt to put the Vatican’s position, first articulated fully by Pope Benedict XVI in a 2012 speech, into a comprehensive, official text.

The document called for a new alliance among families, schools and society to offer a ‘positive and prudent sexual education’ in Catholic schools so children learn the ‘full original truth of masculinity and femininity.’

It called gender fluidity a symptom of the ‘confused concept of freedom’ and ‘momentary desires’ that characterize post-modern culture. It rejected terms such as ‘intersex’ and ‘transgender’ and said the purpose of the biological ‘complementarity’ of the male and female sex organs was to ensure procreation.

Francis DeBernardo, head of New Ways Ministry, said such concepts are outdated, misinformed and ignore contemporary science on factors beyond visible genitalia that determine gender.

He said: ‘Gender is also biologically determined by genetics, hormones and brain chemistry – things not visible at birth.

‘People do not choose their gender, as the Vatican claims, they discover it through their lived experiences.’

He said the Catholic Church should encourage this process of discovery, saying it’s ‘a process by which individuals discover the wonderful way that God has created them.’

Will She or Won't She? Christina Lakin Discusses Trying for Baby No. 3

All done! Christine Lakin and her husband, Brandon Breault, aren’t planning to add any more babies to their brood.

“For the love of God, no,” the actress, 40, told Us Weekly exclusively when asked if she wanted more kids at the 2nd annual Bloom Summit presented by New Bloom Media and @beautymomme earlier this week. “I think we have to be done. … I’m too old for that waking up three times a night thing. I just need to sleep. Mama needs her rest.”

Part of the Step by Step alum wishes that wasn’t the case though. “I would love to have one more because I’m just relishing this baby time,” Lakin, who shares Georgia, 3, and Baylor, 8 months, with the actor went on to say. “I don’t feel like I did that enough with my first. I was just a new mom [and] I had so much anxiety about trying to get it all right and not screw it up and not make a mistake. Now it’s like, ‘Oh, you got a diaper? Great, go to Ralphs.’ It’s not a big deal. I’m just enjoying all the baby moments so much more.”

Her youngest recently reached a major milestone, and the Family Guy star gushed about her little guy. “I’ve got a crawler,” she told Us. “He’s finally getting the arms and legs together. It’s insane!”

The Texas native added: “Having two kids the age of 3 and under is really tough. … It’s constant madness. We’re in the thick of it.”

Although Georgia likes to help out with her baby brother, the toddler can be “aggressive” with her helping, Lakin told Us. “She’s like, ‘I help feed him!’” she said. “And she’s shoving the food in his mouth and I’m like, ‘Ah! OK, let’s just calm down.’”

Back when she was carrying Baylor, the pregnant star told Us exclusively that she had high hopes for her daughter’s new role as a big sister. “She loves other kids … so fingers crossed,” Lakin told Us in June 2018. “That’s all I can really do at this point because it’s happening! There’s no return policy on children.”

Man is giving out 'pro choice' tattoos in exchange for charity donations

With horrendous bans on abortion in Northern Ireland and Alabama, we need pro-choice allies speaking up about reproductive rights.

That means people marching the streets in protest, supporting those who have had abortions, and helping those in places where abortions remain illegal.

But it also means doing what you can to raise awareness on an individual level.

For Patrick Bates, that’s giving out tattoos.

Patrick is a tattoo artist living in Brighton with a rep for doing simple hand-poked lettering. He’s been tattooing for three years, having previously worked in residential care homes for young adults with mental health issues and learning disabilities.

His act of allyship is in giving out free ‘pro choice’ tattoos in exchange for a charity donation of whatever the individual can afford.

On Sunday 2 June at Heartbreaker Tattoo in Brighton, Patrick will welcome anyone who’d like to get ‘pro choice’ tattooed on their body. People can donate what they like, with money going to Women Help Women and NARAL.

Patrick tells Metro.co.uk: ‘I kept seeing and hearing stories about what was happening in America with regards to the abortion laws. It sounded like something out of a dystopian novel.

‘My family are of Irish and Argentinian descent and I played basketball in America for five years as a teenager so the topic in each of these countries was quite close to my heart.

‘I started tattooing three or so years ago and have now got an online platform which reaches people from all over the world so I thought I should use that platform to speak about what was happening and hopefully make as many people aware of what was going on as possible.’

Patrick initially wanted to just tattoo ‘pro choice’ all day for free so that all those supporting the right to choose could stand proud. But when he offered out the tattoo, fans said they wanted to donate money in aid of reproductive rights, too.

He’s already done the pro choice tattoo five times in the last week, and is hoping the dedicated day in June will see loads more people getting the words inked on their bodies.

‘I hope to tattoo at least 30 people on the day,’ says Patrick.

Of course, lots of people won’t be able to get to Brighton for the day, so Patrick has some other options.

‘I thought I would offer to write the words and take a photo and send the file to whoever wanted it for free and they can get it tattooed where they live,’ says Patrick. ‘My assistant Iva told me that she has sent the design to about 300 people so far.

‘I never expected so many people would want to get the tattoo. I would love it if 1,000 people would get it.’

Patrick also plans to release a pro choice T-shirt, with all profits also going to charity.

If you’d like your own pro choice tattoo, contact Patrick by email at [email protected]

Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko set to stay at San Siro… by swapping AC Milan for Inter

TIEMOUE BAKAYOKO is heading back to the San Siro to hook up with Inter – after being binned by AC Milan.

Bakayoko feared his days in Milan were numbered when AC snubbed the chance to turn his season-long loan from Chelsea into a £35million permanent deal.

But former Stamford Bridge boss Antonio Conte is about to replace Luciano Spalletti as Inter manager, and he wants a reunion with the 24-year-old French international.

Inter general manager Beppe Marotta has an 'excellent' relationship with Bakayoko's Italian representative Federico Pastorello.

The pair are already in talks over a move that would see the central midfielder tabling his talents back in Serie A again next term.

Marotta and Pastorello are negotiating a deal for Inter to pay Chelsea £5m to take Bakayoko on loan for a year with an option to buy for £30m next summer.

Bakayoko was 'very happy' in Milan, despite failing to find his best form and falling out with head coach Gennaro Gattuso.

There were concerns he would not want to stay in Italy after suffering racist abuse during the Coppa Italia semi-final against Lazio.

Chants, whistles and jeers were directed at the midfielder before, during and after the game with reports of inflatable bananas thrown around in the away section at the San Siro.

His problems resulted in AC Milan releasing a statement insisting they would have 'no intention' of exercising their option to buy on economic and disciplinary grounds.

And Bakayoko looks to have no future at Chelsea, either.

He has been branded as surplus to requirements by manager Maurizio Sarri – even though he still has three years left on his contract.

The Frenchman signed a five-year deal in West London when he made his £40m switch from Monaco in 2017.

Kieran Culkin and Wife Jazz Charton Are Expecting Their First Child

Kieran Culkin might never be Home Alone again: He and wife Jazz Charton are expecting their first child together!

Charton revealed the happy news on Tuesday, May 14, by posting a sonogram image to Instagram. “My favourite surprise so far,” the former model wrote in the caption.

She continued: “We had no idea how much we wanted this until it happened. We’re excited/terrified/ecstatic/unprepared but we cannot wait to meet our little unexpected creation in September.”

Not even a year ago, Culkin, 36, seemed less than enthusiastic about the prospect of becoming a father. “It just seems like a lot to take on,” he told i magazine in July 2018. “I suppose if she gets pregnant, that would be fine, but it’s really not on our horizon.”

The Succession star also pointed out that none of his siblings, including his Home Alone costar Macaulay, had started families. “My mother is one of 11 kids and she had seven kids and she has no grandchildren,” he added.

Culkin, who previously dated Emma Stone, opened up about meeting Charton in the same interview. He explained that he saw “this most beautiful girl” at a New York City bar and sat down at her table when her male companion got up to use the restroom. “I asked if he was her boyfriend and when she said no, I asked if I could be her boyfriend. We’ve been together ever since,” he told the magazine. “When someone is as beautiful as my wife, you just want to be close to that.”

The couple, who married in 2013, have already expanded their family, adopting a cat and naming him after jazz legend Django Reinhardt. “My wife loves Django so much,” Culkin said in the interview. “She won’t even travel because she doesn’t want to leave him. I’d really like to travel to Mexico this summer but we’ll have to consult with the cat first.”

Kentucky Derby: 5 underdog horses who could win the Run for the Roses

It's called the "wise-guy horse" – that one Kentucky Derby runner each year that takes money seemingly out of nowhere, backed by insiders who've been watching every move in the mornings at Churchill Downs.

Of late, the Kentucky Derby, however, has become annually a very chalky exercise. The post-time favorite has won the Derby six years in a row, going back to I'll Have Another, who paid $32.60 at 15-1 odds in 2012.

That run of winning favorites is astounding given such large fields of accomplished, young and relatively unpredictable horses.

At some point, it has to end, right?

There doesn't appear to be a Triple Crown-caliber horse like American Pharoah or Justify in this year's field. Doesn't mean a Triple Crown run can't happen this year. It just means there hasn't been the overwhelming buzz and hype for expected top contenders like Omaha Beach, Roadster and Game Winner that we saw for those horses entering those Derbys.

This field seems to have more parity than some of the others, and while these five horses may not all be "wise-guy" material, each of them has reason to think he has got a shot at the roses on Saturday, potentially paying a lot of money in the process.

Maximum Security

There is only one unbeaten horse in this field. There is also one only horse that is a true front-runner with early speed. And it is the same horse, one listed at 10-1 on the morning line.

There is uncertainty here, for sure. We don't know how Maximum Security will handle being behind horses, because he's been out front in all four of his wins. He wired the Florida Derby by 3½ lengths on March 30, and it was his only Kentucky Derby prep. He raced to the lead that day and was left alone out front, allowing accomplished jockey Luis Saez – who is back on board for this race – to settle him down on the lead to a manageable pace. It was simple from there, and Maximum Security had plenty on the stretch to cruise to an easy win.

DERBY: Jockey sounds off after losing mount

THE FIELD: Post positions, odds

His other wins prior to that one were by 18, 6½ and 9¾ lengths. This will obviously be much tougher in the Kentucky Derby and the longest distance he has seen, but he could be very dangerous in a field full of stalk-and-close and late-running horses that have not typically sought the early lead. If the field leaves him alone out front, watch out. He has shown what can happen.

By My Standards

If there is a true "wise-guy" horse in this field, it's probably going to be trainer Bret Calhoun's By My Standards, the surprising winner of March's Louisiana Derby at 22-1 odds. This is an improving horse clearly coming off his best effort as he enters a Kentucky Derby on his home turf, having being given morning-line odds of 20-1.

By My Standards has been on the board in every race and won his last two, with jockey Gabriel Saez – who has ridden all five of his races – getting a seam in the stretch to take the 1⅛-mile Louisiana Derby with a lot of horse left, beating fellow Derby horse Spinoff to do it. By My Standards is a stronger starter too. He flies out of the gate, which would allow him to establish a nice position for a late rally.

Win Win Win

If you like the late-running Tacitus at 10-1 odds, you should love Win Win Win at 15-1. He has turned into a slow-starting, deep closer who actually was supposed to be a sprinter, fast enough to set a track-record time at seven furlongs at Tampa Bay Downs in January. But he came off the pace to do that, and he has continued to come off the pace. He has had some tough trips because of that and will obviously need to start better and receive a lot of luck to navigate the traffic a 20-horse field, but more than any of the other closers in this field he has been flying late in his races and, well, he's probably due a little good fortune.

At the Tampa Bay Derby in March, he closed within 2½ lengths of Tacitus despite having a much tougher trip at 1 1/16 miles, having to check early on an early speed-favoring track. Then at the Blue Grass Stakes in April, he closed quickly to within 3½ lengths of the winner Vekoma to nab second at 1⅛ miles after another tough trip and a track bias. Keeneland was playing toward early speed that week. In both races, Win Win Win was closing fast and could have used the additional distance that he'll get at Churchill Downs.

Spinoff

It's difficult to know what to expect from a horse with only two starts since August, but it's not often that you can get one of trainer Todd Pletcher's runners at a price in the Kentucky Derby. The lightly raced Spinoff opened at 30-1 having improved his speed figure each time in four races.

While he lost by ¾ of a length to By My Standards in the Louisiana Derby, he also had to cover a lot more ground that day. Prior to that race, Spinoff won by 11 lengths in Tampa off a layoff of more than six months. He has shown impressive early speed, winning a debut race at five furlongs last year, and some late endurance to go with it. Pletcher didn't bring his horses to Churchill Downs early this year, and that is going to help Spinoff stay overlooked in the Kentucky Derby despite his connections and his upside. He just might be sitting on a big race.

Country House

Churchill Downs, Louisville Courier Journal

Much like Win Win Win, Country House (opened at 30-1 odds) starts very slowly and closes very fast. And as is the case with Win Win Win, a whole lot is going to need to go right for Country House to steal this race late. Is that likely? No. But he does have the late-running ability to take advantage of a pace meltdown if it happens.

NCAA men’s basketball champs will skip White House visit

The NCAA men’s basketball champs won’t be celebrating their win at the White House.

The University of Virginia team turned down an invite to visit with President Trump in honor of their victory earlier this month.

Head coach Tony Bennett said the meet and greet was declined due to scheduling conflicts.

“We have received inquiries about a visit to the White House,” Bennett tweeted on the hoops program’s official account. “With several players either pursuing pro opportunities or moving on from UVA, it would be difficult, if not impossible to get everyone back together. We would have to respectfully decline an invitation.”

It’s tradition for the winning team from various sports championships to get an invitation from the White House.

Last year, none was extended to the Villanova Wildcats after the team took home the men’s basketball trophy.

Coach Jay Wright commented in October that it would be difficult to get the team back together if one was extended. In 2017, the champion University of North Carolina team said no date could be arranged for a visit.

This year’s winner of the women’s tournament, Baylor University, accepted the White House invite. On Monday, the Lady Bears will be the first women’s championship team to make a solo visit since Trump took office.

Directed by Sausage Party‘s Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, The Addams Family sees the Addamses planning for a massive family function, while dealing with reality TV host Margaux Needler (Allison Janney), who is “consumed with a desire for absolute suburban pastel perfection.” Ick.
