Tyler Perry Defends Joel Osteen for Not Opening His Church to Hurricane Harvey Victims Sooner

The ‘Madea’ actor will donate $1 million to the Houston flood relief efforts with $250,000 going to Joel’s Lakewood Church.

Tyler Perry came to Joel Osteen’s defense. The multi-millionaire televangelist landed in hot water for not immediately opening his Lakewood Church to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas over the weekend. The church was opened to the evacuees on Tuesday, August 29.

“I know that there’s been some controversy about Joel Osteen and him not opening the doors of the church,” Tyler said in a Facebook video. “Joel and [wife] Victoria are amazing people – there’s no way that they would lock people out of the church or not let people seek shelter.”

“There were some safety concerns, and I spoke to them on the phone, and it all made perfect sense to me,” the 47-year-old actor/director continued. “So, before you just run and judge someone real quick, you need to know the whole circumstances.”

Joel’s church was claimed to be flooded but videos and pictures on the internet seemed to show otherwise. In one video, a man deadpanned, “Can you imagine how much money you’d have to spend on those carpets to get them clean? Probably thousands of dollars! I mean, I don’t blame the guy…”

A Lakewood associate pastor John Gray responded on Instagram but quickly deleted it. “For the people spreading lies about my church. If WE could get there WE WOULD OPEN THE DOORS,” he wrote. “As soon as the highways aren’t flooded please know @lakewoodchurch will do all they can alleviate the pain and suffering of as many people as possible. Love y’all! #CantStandLiars.”

Joel also defended himself. “There were safety issues that people don’t understand. But, I really believe that if people were in my shoes, they would have done the same thing,” he told Entertainment Tonight. “When the building is clear, when it’s safe, we can start taking people. That’s what we have done for 60 years. We love helping people and that’s what our message is all about.”

In separate statement to CNN, his father-in-law Donald Iloff said, “We have never closed our doors. We will continue to be a distribution center for those in need. We are prepared to shelter people once the cities and county shelters reach capacity. Lakewood will be a value to the community in the aftermath of this storm in helping our fellow citizens rebuild their lives.”

On “Today” show, Joel said the church was not immediately opened for evacuees because city officials didn’t ask him to use it as a shelter. “(The city) didn’t need us as shelter then. If we needed to be a shelter, we certainly would’ve been a shelter right when they first asked.”

Tyler announced $1 million donation to the relief efforts in the Gulf Coast. He will send $250,000 of his donation to Joel’s church and another $250,000 to Beyonce Knowles’ pastor, Rudy Rasmus. Queen Bey herself said she was working with her pastor “to implement a plan to help” the community.

“It’ll make me cry. So, I can’t really – I can’t really talk about it,” she said. “I don’t know why it makes me so upset. It just really makes me just really upset. So I really hope people know…my grandma’s sitting here and my mom’s here and I go home to my seven dogs and if I didn’t have that anymore, it’d just be really hard.”

A teary-eyed Miley told Ellen DeGeneres, “So I’m really happy to help any way that I can and I hope people understand they can put themselves in those people’s shoes and just know what it feels like to have everything taken away from you.”

Ellen herself donated $50,000 of her own money to the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. The host also presented a $1M check from Walmart to J.J. Watt’s crowdfunding initiative. “What you’re doing is incredible. We want to help,” Ellen told Watts via FaceTime. “Walmart is on track to donate over $20 million in cash and supplies to Hurricane Harvey relief. But, that is not all. Walmart is also donating $1 million to J.J.’s relief effort right now.”

The ‘I Won’t Let You Down’ hitmaker was seen filling in boxes with donation items at a donation center in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, August 30.

Rita Ora has a heart of gold. The “Fifty Shades of Grey” actress showed support for the victims of Hurricane Harvey as she was spotted helping volunteers filling in boxes with donation items at a donation center in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, August 30.

In a photo obtained by TMZ, the “Your Song” songstress could be seen listening to an apparent volunteer talking. She looked focused while holding an empty box with her hand. Rita looked casual in a black T-shirt and navy training pants.

Earlier that day, Rita took to Twitter to express her wish to help the victims. “I’m trying to find a Houston Texas shelter in Dallas to go and help before I leave Texas!” she tweeted, before adding, “I want to help.”

However, @Gleeson84 thought it was unnecessary for Rita to announce it on social media. “And you needed to announce this to twitter and not just do it anonymously because….?” s/he snarked, before adding, “You’re telling me with all the people she has around her they are unable to get this information. Bollocks! She did he same with grenfell.”

Rita wasn’t the only one who offered to help the victims as Kevin Hart previously started Hurricane Harvey Relief challenge, saying that he had donated money to the Red Cross and asked other celebrities to make donations. “I think we’ve participated in a lot of challenges on the Internet, some meaningful, some meaningless, but we’ve all done them. I’ve been a person that’s partaken in several of them,” he said in a video, before calling on Beyonce Knowles, Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake as well as other famous stars to do the same.

The show encourages those who still want to audition to attend the upcoming auditions in Shreveport and New Orleans on September 4 and 14 respectively.

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, “American Idol” has canceled its upcoming auditions in Houston and San Antonio. The upcoming revived show announced the cancellation on Twitter on Tuesday, August 29.

People Literally Die Because They Don’t Respect Hurricanes With Feminine Names

A new study has revealed that sexism actually extends beyond human women, all the way to inanimate weather systems. After examining six decades worth of hurricane death rates, researchers at the University of Illinois and Arizona State University learned that female-named storms have historically killed more people. To be clear, this doesn’t appear to be because storms with feminine names are more wrathful than ones with masculine names. The researchers found that people don’t consider a storm with a ~*~girly~*~ name to be as risk and subsequently don’t take the same safety precautions as storms with STRONG, BOYISH, SCARY names.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that among the 47 most damaging hurricanes (excluding hurricanes Katrina and Audrey) between 1950 and 2012, female-named storms killed an average of 45 people, while equally aggressive male-named storms killed an average of 23 people. Storms with particularly feminine names, like “Eloise,” show an even more increase death rate, leading researchers to believe “that changing a severe hurricane’s name from Charley to Eloise could nearly triple its death toll.”

Sharon Shavitt, a study co-author and professor of marketing at the University of Illinois, told the Washington Post that the results imply an “implicit sexism.”

“People imagining a ‘female’ hurricane were not as willing to seek shelter,” Shavitt told the Washington Post. “The stereotypes that underlie these judgments are subtle and not necessarily hostile toward women — they may involve viewing women as warmer and less aggressive than men.”

In a response to the media amid the flurry of gender-related hurricane news, the researchers note that they didn’t suggest that policy surrounding hurricane names be changed. It’s just one study, after all. But! It’s certainly an interesting study, and truly in these times, it’s not at all unfathomable that implicit sexism would cause people to react differently to storms based solely on sounding “delicate” and “girly.”
