Truck driver escapes ticket by replacing broken tail light with red sports drink

He wanted cops to see red.

A resourceful Colorado truck driver replaced his busted tail light with a bottle of red sports drink — and cops let him go without a ticket.

A Longmont Police sergeant pulled over the man, a driver for an oil company in town every two weeks, while he was on his way to get the light fixed on Monday night, ABC Denver reported.

A photo shared by Longmont Police on Facebook shows a bottle filled with a red liquid and duct-taped to the back of the man’s truck.

Colorado law says all on-road vehicles must be equipped with a red light that can be seen from at least 100 feet away in daylight.

Obviously, a bottle of refreshing electrolytes doesn’t fit the bill.

Cops let the man go without a ticket and true to his word, they spotted him at a garage later on Monday getting his tail light fixed.

“While we appreciate the ingenuity of this tail light, this is not a permanent solution,” Longmont Fire, Police and OEM wrote in a Facebook post.

“Working tail lights prevent accidents,” they said.

NAVARA DARK SKY CONCEPT STATS

The Nissan has four-wheel drive, 20-inch (50 cm) wheels with off-road tyres and high-intensity headlights.

Under the bonnet is a 2.3-litre twin-turbocharged diesel.

The Navara and trailer both feature portable EV battery packs.

When docked in place, the battery packs are constantly in charging mode and ready for use.

Additional high-tech features include Wi-Fi, a laptop station, and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio transmission to relay data instantaneously worldwide.

The one-off Nissan, developed in the UK in collaboration with the European Space Agency, was unveiled at today’s Hannover Motor Show in Germany.

The trailer module has a special refrigerated atmosphere, which allows the telescope to remain stable and calibrated at the optimum temperature in transit to any location.

Once at the desired destination, the trailer module’s mechanised roof opens to focus the telescope on the night sky.

ESA is mapping the stars with unprecedented precision using its Gaia satellite, which has already observed more than one billion stars.

Fred Jansen, ESA’s senior mission manager for Gaia, said: ‘The Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept allows observations to take place in very remote places, avoiding light pollution, while also transporting telescopes safely and easily.

‘Telescopes like the one in the trailer are needed in studies of planets and stars in our galaxy, allowing Earth-based follow-up campaigns enabled by the Gaia data.’

WHAT IS THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY’S GAIA PROBE AND WHAT IS DESIGNED TO DO?

Gaia is an ambitious mission to chart a three-dimensional map of our galaxy, the Milky Way, and in the process reveal its composition, formation and evolution.

Gaia has been circling the sun nearly a million miles beyond Earth’s orbit since its launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) in December 2013.

On its journey, the probe has been discreetly snapping pictures of the Milky Way, identifying stars from smaller galaxies long ago swallowed up by our own.

Tens of thousands of previously undetected objects are expected to be discovered by Gaia, including asteroids that may one day threaten Earth, planets circling nearby stars, and exploding supernovas.

Artist’s impression of Gaia mapping the stars of the Milky Way. Gaia maps the position of the Milky Way’s stars in a couple of ways. It pinpoints the location of the stars but the probe can also plot their movement, by scanning each star about 70 times

Astrophysicists also hope to learn more about the distribution of dark matter, the invisible substance thought to hold the observable universe together.

They also plan to test Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity by watching how light is deflected by the sun and its planets.

The satellite’s billion-pixel camera, the largest ever in space, is so powerful it would be able to gauge the diameter of a human hair at a distance of 621 miles (1,000 km).

This means nearby stars have been located with unprecedented accuracy.

Gaia maps the position of the Milky Way’s stars in a couple of ways.

It pinpoints the location of the stars but the probe can also plot their movement, by scanning each star about 70 times.

This is what allows scientists to calculate the distance between Earth and each star, which is a crucial measure.

In September 2016, ESA released the first batch of data collected by Gaia, which included information on the brightness and position of over a billion stars.

In April 2018, this was expanded to high-precision measurements of almost 1.7 billion stars.

To negotiate tricky terrain, the Nissan has four-wheel drive, 20-inch (50 cm) wheels with off-road tyres and high-intensity headlights. The overall ride height has been raised for improved ground clearance.

Under the bonnet is a 2.3-litre twin-turbocharged diesel with enough pulling power to handle the trailer’s additional weight.

The Navara and trailer both feature portable EV battery packs, which make use of Nissan’s existing electric-vehicle battery technology.

When docked in place, the battery packs are constantly in charging mode and ready for use.

Additional high-tech features include Wi-Fi, a laptop station and UHF (Ultra High Frequency) radio transmission to relay data instantaneously to anywhere in the world.

Parking is made simple thanks to the cameras which give the driver a bird’s-eye-view around the vehicle.

There are eight radar units, on each corner of the vehicle and trailer, which update the driver on the vehicle’s surroundings through the touch screen on the dashboard.

At the heart of the trailer is the ultrahigh-power PlaneWave telescope which uses a 16 inch (40 cm) primary mirror to focus on the night’s sky.

Since red light affects human night vision least, both the vehicle and trailer exclusively use red lighting to avoid visual disruption during observations.

The Navara also has ProPILOT, which enhances the driver’s control by combining Nissan’s Intelligent Cruise Control and Steering Assist technologies.

Ashwani Gupta, senior vice president of Nissan’s light commercial vehicle business, said: ‘The Nissan Navara Dark Sky Concept is a brilliant example of Nissan serving as an authentic partner, empowering our customers to go anywhere.

‘Through Nissan Intelligent Mobility and ProPILOT, we are creating the best solutions for the next frontiers of business, no matter how complex the commercial need.’

Truck Driver Rescues 64 Dogs and Cats From Hurricane Florence

Tony Alsup is being hailed as a modern-day Noah, saving hordes of animals from floodwaters. Instead of an arc, though, the 51-year-old has a hollowed-out school bus he uses to rescue dozens of pets from hurricanes.

As of Sunday, September 16, the truck driver from Greenback, Tennessee, had already driven 64 cats and dogs away from the path of Hurricane Florence.

“I’m like, look, these are lives too,” Alsup told The Washington Post that night. “Animals — especially shelter pets — they always have to take the back seat of the bus. But I’ll give them their own bus. If I have to I’ll pay for all the fuel, or even a boat, to get these dogs out of there.”

Alsup started rescuing pets from deadly storms last year — when he headed to Texas in the face of Hurricane Harvey. But he knew he couldn’t put dogs and cats in the back of his semitrailer. “I thought, well what can I do?” he told The Post. “I’ll just go buy a bus.”

Since then, Alsup has also come to the rescue of pets endangered by Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Ahead of Florence’s arrival last week, the trucker stopped at shelters in the South Carolina towns of North Myrtle Beach, Orangeburg and Georgetown. He asked social media followers to alert him to pets in need in other locations. “NO ONE LEFT BEHIND,” he wrote in one Facebook post.

“It’s all true,” Georgetown’s Saint Frances Animal Center wrote on Facebook. “Tony swooped in at 4am Wednesday morning to pick up our ‘leftovers’ — the dogs with blocky heads, the ones with heartworm. The ones no one else will ever take. And he got them to safety. Not the most conventional evacuation, but surely the one with the most heart.”

Alsup drove the dogs and cats to Foley, Alabama, where he and a friend found shelters and foster homes for all 64 animals. As of Sunday night, he was planning to head to Wilmington, North Carolina, hoping to assist another shelter in need.

Hurricane Florence spurs truck driver to rescue dozens of dogs, cats from floods on school bus

Florence's floodwaters race through Fayetteville, NC

Jeff Flock reports from a neighborhood under water and without power.

When Hurricane Florence set its sights on the Carolina coast last week, Tony Alsup decided it was time for him to head into the storm zone to help clear out animal shelters in its path.

The 51-year-old trucker from Tennessee has transformed an old school bus into an animal transport on wheels, with the words "EMERGENCY ANIMAL RESCUE SHELTER" on the side. In his first trip to South Carolina, Alsup was able to rescue 53 dogs and 11 cats, the Greenville News reported.

“I love it,” he told The Greenville News. “People don’t believe me, they say it’s got to be barking crazy. But no. They know I’m the Alpha dog and I’m not here to hurt them.”

In photos posted to Facebook, the group of dogs can be seen in kennels stacked to the roof hanging out in the back of the school bus awaiting their next stop.

Alsup also took a selfie with the bus full of kennels, writing "LET’S ROLL!!!"

"It’s all true – Tony swooped in at 4am Wednesday morning to pick up our ‘leftovers’ – the dogs with blocky heads, the ones with heartworm. The ones no one else will ever take. And he got them to safety," The Saint Frances Animal Center in Georgetown, S.C. said in a Facebook post. "Not the most conventional evacuation, but surely the one with the most heart.

WEAKENED FLORENCE REMAINS DANGEROUS AS IT WORKS ITS WAY NORTH

After picking up the animals in four South Carolina towns, Alsup transported the group to a shelter in Alabama, where they will be spread out to other shelters across the country and hopefully be adopted.

“It’s so easy for people to adopt the small pets and the cuties and the cuddly,” he told the paper. “We take on the ones that deserve a chance even though they are big and a little ugly. But I love big dogs, and we find places for them.”

ANIMALS RESCUED FROM FLORENCE FLOODWATERS, AFTER PETS LEFT BEHIND OR FORGOTTEN

The 51-year-old has been involved in large-scale animal rescues using his bus since last year, when Hurricane Harvey inundated Texas with floodwaters and during Hurricane Irma. He felt compelled to help out after watching how shelters became overcrowded with lost or rescued animals.

“I thought, well what can I do?” he told the Washington Post. “I’ll just go buy a bus.”

After his trip to South Carolina, he has since headed back into the storm zone. In a series of videos posted to Facebook, Alsup said that he was headed towards the Lumberton area of North Carolina where a dam could possibly collapse after being overtopped by floodwaters spawned by Florence.

"Pray for those people in Lumberton that that dam doesn’t collapse, but we’re trying to get people and pets out of the way before this thing breaks," he said. "It’s better to be safe than sorry. Don’t be somebody who thinks its better to be lucky than safe, just get out of the way."

Car smashes into truck – sending tyres and crumpled metal flying

How did they survive that? Car smashes into broken-down truck, sending tyres and crumpled metal flying – but three people involved escape with only minor injuries

  • Footage shows the moment a pick-up is hit in the middle of a motorway
  • Debris and metal is thrown everywhere following the collision in Toronto
  • Two people are hurled from the pick-up as it is knocked into the tow truck

This shocking footage shows the moment a car rammed into the side of a broken-down truck on a busy motorway.

Shortly before the moment of impact a man is seen reaching into the green pick-up truck which is blocking an overtaking lane.

As the truck is struck wheels and debris hurtle towards the camera and the man vanishes from view.

Despite the carnage, three people involved in the crash managed to escape with their lives.

The incident was captured by the camera on a tow truck that was helping the broken-down pick-up on Toronto’s Highway 401 at around 7pm last Saturday.

A man reaches into the broken-down truck by the central reservation of Toronto’s Highway 401 as other cars drive around the stranded vehicle

The impact of the crash sends pieces of mangled metal, the contents of the car and even wheels hurtling through the air.

The man is sent flying towards the central reservation and a woman and a younger man are both thrown from the truck. The woman lands face down while the younger man is able to walk away from the crash.

The driver who rammed the white vehicle into the truck is not seen in the video.

Adil Kanan, whose dashcam footage caught the collision, told Global News: ‘When this vehicle was approaching [the pick-up truck] in lane one, there was no gesture to slow down. There was no gesture to signal and move over.

‘You could tell whoever was operating that vehicle was not aware that this [pick-up truck] was in front of them. Many other vehicles who were passing the accident had ample time to slow down and move over safely, which they did.’

Truck driver killed a mother-of-four in crash while checking phone

Recovery truck driver killed a mother-of-four after ramming into the back of her car because he was too busy checking his mobile phone

  • David Shields killed Yvonne Blackman when his lorry crashed into her car
  • Lorry driver, 34, was checking his mobile phone during collision in Scotland
  • Witnesses said he broke down in tears at the roadside after fatal smash
  • Mrs Blackman, 66, had been on way to discuss missionary work with friends
  • Shields admitted causing death by dangerous driving ahead of sentencing

A vehicle recovery driver killed a missionary worker by ramming into her car as he looked at his mobile phone.

David Shields crashed into the back of Yvonne Blackman’s vehicle on the A75 in Dumfries in February 2017.

The 66-year-old woman was badly injured and died weeks later in hospital.

Damning footage taken from Shields’s lorry captured him focusing on his phone for a full 18 seconds in the lead-up to the fatal smash.

He is facing a lengthy jail-term after appearing at the High Court in Glasgow yesterday.

David Shields, left, has been remanded in custody ahead of sentencing after admitting causing the death of Yvonne Blackman, right, by dangerous driving when he crashed his lorry into her car while checking his mobile phone

Shields – who had a previous conviction for speeding – pleaded guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

The 34-year-old was remanded in custody pending sentencing next month.

Mrs Blackman, of Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire, was on her way to meet friends to discuss possible missionary work when tragedy struck.

The mother of four got caught in heavy traffic on the A75 Gretna to Stranraer road at 8.30am on February 8, 2017. Shields was driving in the area while working for 911 Rescue Recovery.

He met the same line of traffic – before ploughing into the back of Mrs Blackman’s Toyota Yaris.

Prosecutor Liam Ewing said: ‘Witnesses noted that the lorry did not appear to brake until a short distance before the collision, at which time it skidded or snaked.’

The court heard Mrs Blackman’s car hit a BMW in front before spinning to a halt. The pensioner was found unconscious in her car – as Shields ‘sobbed’ at the roadside.

Mr Ewing said: ‘He stated he had left Stoke and was driving to Kilmarnock. He did not say what caused the collision.’

CCTV from inside his cab of Shields looking at his phone just before the crash was shown to the court, before he broke down in tears

Mrs Blackman was taken to hospital with serious spinal injuries and multiple rib fractures.

The court was told she passed away two weeks later on February 23. The cause of death was chest and spinal injuries due to the crash.

Shields, of Drognan, Ayrshire, was later questioned by police.

He initially said he had noticed ‘at the last second’ that the ‘traffic was not moving’.

Shields added: ‘There were no brake or hazard lights on the vehicle in front. I slammed the brakes on, slid and collided.’

Crash investigators later stated Shields had a potential distance of 280 yards to stop and avoid the smash.

This was deemed ‘sufficient’ to spot any car ahead.

But examination of the seven cameras in his cab showed his ‘attention had been on a dash-mounted mobile telephone’.

Mr Ewing said: ‘An analysis established he had been focusing on the phone… therefore failing to maintain proper observations of the road ahead.

Pictured: Mrs Blackman’s Toyota Yaris after the crash. She was taken to hospital but died from her injuries

‘[This was] for a period of 18 seconds prior to reacting to the presence of the car.’

The footage was yesterday shown in court. Shields appeared to break down as it was played.

He is seen driving while checking the phone before his cab shudders as it hits Mrs Blackman’s car.

It is not known what he was doing on his mobile at the time.

Part of the charge to which Shields pleaded guilty stated he did ‘repeatedly interact with and focus your attention’ on a phone.

Shields’s defence lawyer, John Scullion, QC, said: ‘He accepts full responsibility for the death and bitterly regrets driving as he did.’

Lady Stacey banned him from the road as sentencing was deferred for reports.
